Re: [Announce] gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

Major improvements in the GUI menus.

Restored 'Enter Selection Moves' -> Ok.

I still have the problem of moving cell to cell with the arrow keys up and down with the Spanish keyboard.

Spanish keyboard photo left in the N900.

Same problem here with ITA keyboard and up/down arrows, too. And it's a pity that recently used items had been lost during menu hildonization.
Thx for all the work anyway !!!

Again, thanks for the bug report ;)
Issue is already fixed in the new internal build.

* Fixed: Broken 'Validation' page in 'Format' dialog.
* Added: List of recently used files.
* Added: Visibility of the toolbars is now saved,
* Updated: Czech and Italian translations.

List of recently used files is located in the 'File' submenu ;)

Of course :)
Choose a text and translate it. You should do it in the following format:
Code:

msgid "File saved"
msgstr "Your translation for 'File saved'"

msgid "File opened"
msgstr "Your translation for 'File opened'"

etc.

And send a file with translations to me ;)

Re: [Announce] gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

I've just uploaded Gnumeric 1.10.11 for Maemo to the Extras-devel. This release works well with goffice 0.8.10 and libgsf-1 1.4.18. However newer versions are recommended (0.8.11 and 1.4.19).

Changes:
* Updated to 1.10.11
* Fixed: Bug #6338
* Added: Portrait mode (only for viewing, disabled by default)

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

When typing in a cell, a function name, a completion suggestion pops up.
When I press the suggestion on the screen the active cell is changed to where I presed :(

It says "F4 to complete".

Anyone know how to press "F4"?

F4 key is not working, because it's responsible for showing the main menu in all the Hildon apps.

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

We have a new version of Gnumeric (1.10.12-1) in Extras-devel.
Changes:
* Updated to 1.10.12
* Updated Italian translation. Thanks jurop88!
* Some UI improvements.

arcean 2010-11-29 10:16

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

Gnumeric version bumped to 1.10.12-2. It contains new UI fixes.

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

I recommend adding support for scroll using your finger across the screen.

Now I use the stylus or keys to move.

jurop88 2010-11-29 18:04

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

@whitewolf:
and then how do you select multiple cells? Now I am using cursor keys for moving and I think it is an usable spreadsheet while on the go... except for the small screen area when using high zooms (necessary to be able to read datas)
Ideas welcome.
btw, thx Arcean for continuos updates!

WhiteWolf 2010-11-29 19:53

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

An example:
Would use the default scrolling mode, to enable editing and / or selection of cells would hold and the context menu add the option of editing.

Now scroll through the document is slow, especially if you only want to check data.

goetz 2010-11-29 20:23

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

The idea of quick scrolling sounds interesting.

Maybe a menu entry in the main menu or a button in the main toolbar to toggle the normal and the scrolling mode would help. Also, a setting in the options for default normal (=editing) mode or scroll mode after program start could be useful.

I, for example, would use the scroll mode only occasionally, but normaly like to have quick editing in normal mode. The proposed switch between using tap and hold context menu is simply to slow and would reduce usability of Gnumeric drastically IMHO.

arcean 2010-11-29 23:19

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

Ok, I'll check the ways to implement this at the weekend. I'm afraid that it'll required too many changes, so we will break compatibility with upstream :).
Hmm, for toggling between scrolling modes we can also use a hotkey. But I agree that there should be a button in a visible place.

Maybe a swipe from the left of the screen, like MicroB?

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

A bug: when I try to rename a sheet (format -> sheet -> rename), the screen returns to the normal sheet view and my N900 becomes unresponsive. No rename dialogue shows up. The only way to get out is to push the power button and choose 'End current task'. CPU meter shows minimum load when in unresponsive state. Version of Gnumeric is 1.10.11 and PR1.3 is installed. Any ideas?

Otherwise a brilliant application, thanks for the developers!

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

Renaming sheets from Format->Sheet->Rename is not available under Maemo 5 port, because it's using statusbar to change a sheet name.
If you want to rename a sheet, you should open the Sheet Manager (Ctrl+M), double tap on a fourth column of the sheet table (it will be a empty space next to "Sheet1" or similar), type a new name for a sheet, tap on sth else in the table and click the "Apply Name Changes" button.

For me this solution does not work as there is only three columns. The table ends immediately after the name of the sheet. I tried to double tap the area after the name in a case that the fourth column is very narrow but no luck...

I'll try to redesign the Sheet Manager while implementing the "Launch page" (feature request #6699).
As of scrolling - it's hard to implement it without breaking compatibility with upstream, i.e. too many changes in important parts of application. I've added scroling (not kinetic one) in the "internal build" ;), but the results aren't so good. Scrolling is simply not smooth - the sheet moves only column by column, not by pixel.

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

gnumeric has an advantage over other spreadsheets that rarely gets dicussed, but that I would think would be a prime consideration in spreadsheet selection: numerical accuracy.

The following two articles compare excel and gnumeric for use in statistical analyses. "Fixing Statistical Errors in Spreadsheet Software: The Cases of Gnumeric and Excel", http://www.csdassn.org/software_reports/gnumeric.pdf and "On the accuracy of statistical procedures in Microsoft Excel 2003", http://arc.nucapt.northwestern.edu/~.../sdarticle.pdf

Since all non-trivial software has bugs, I think that it is noteworthy that the response of gnumeric developers to notification of numeric bugs is to fix them.

The following article takes on matlab and other software in addition to excel: "How Futile are Mindless Assessments of Roundoff in Floating-Point Computation ?", http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~wkahan/Mindless.pdf

The above article does not mention gnumeric, but the table at the top of page 3 makes it very easy to compare roundoff among various spreadsheets. If you try the examples from that table with the spreadsheet from open office, you will see that it has most of the same errors as excel. The results from gnumeric are all correct.

And gnumeric runs on more platforms than excel and almost as many as open office.

Really looking forward to this getting into extras-testing!
Is there some way I can add this project to a favourites or something, so I am emailed when it does shift into testing?

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

Just wonder when the updated version will be ready for download. I understand the developer has updated v. 1.10.12.2 to a newer version since more than a month ago.

goetz 2011-02-10 19:41

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

It has been available in extras-devel since end of November, and I haven't seen gnumeric in any other fremantle repository. So you'll have to enable extras-devel to download gnumeric (usual warnings apply for devel repository).

I have been using this version on my N900 for some months and it runs fine -- no problems so far. :)

But I agree with Djonma: It would be a good idea to get it into extras-testing and extras eventually. :)

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

A very useful app and unlike other mobile spreadsheets, it does not cut back on features. i currently use gnumeric in association with dropN900 to manage my spending from mobile/laptop/work.

One small problem is, it's not able to handle my xlsx files. Any way to import xlsx?

Hmm, they should work. Which version of MS Office do you have? And, of course, you have tried to open xlsx files via open dialog?

ps. Gnumeric finally landed it Extras-testing :).

goetz 2011-02-16 06:05

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

Thanks for putting gnumeric into extras-testing, already voted for it. :)

There are some dependencies for package gnumeric: libgoffice-0-8, libgoffice-0-8-common, and libgsf

They are also in extras-testing now. Will we need to vote for them as well to be promoted to extras?

arcean 2011-02-16 19:44

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

Rather no. They should be automatically promoted with gnumeric.

arcean 2011-02-17 00:42

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

Once again we are synced with upstream.
Gnumeric 1.10.13-1 brings:
* Gnumeric updated to 1.10.13
* UI fixes.
* Proper icons associated with spreadsheet files.
* Added Launch Page. It's disabled by default. If you want to change that: Edit->Preferences->Windows->Use Launch Page.
* Small code optimizations.

It's available via Extras-devel.

Also remember to vote for Gnumeric in Extras-testing.

I updated to the latest version of gnumeric from extras-devel and tried again. I am getting file format unsupported error.

The file is a password protected xlsx file created with Excel 2007 in Vista.

I have tried with xlsx files with no password protection earlier and it hadn't worked, so that cant be the problem.

I have received notification of an update today via the App Manager but have been unable to update due to ''conflict with app package grumeric - dbg 1.10.12.2"

Is it just a case of removing the present grumeric to solve the problem?

Just remove gnumeric-dbg package, it's for developers not users :).

@ejasmudar: Would you mind passing me one of those files? Because I'm not able to reproduce this weird behaviour :). Or install Gnumeric for Windows and check if it works. At least we would know if it's Maemo specific or upstream bug.

Hello! great application, I have a question about the shortcuts, in the insert special data menu there is an option to insert Actual Date and Actual Time with the shortcuts Ctrl+; and Ctrl+: respectively but they don't seem to be working, or at least in my keyboard, I press the secuence Ctrl, and as ; comes out with Shift I press Shift+, to bring out the ; but it gives me the output ;, any ideas?

Re: [Announce] Gnumeric - a spreadsheet application for N900

I am running Gnumeric 1.10.14 on a Nokia N900 (Maemo 5). It is a must have application. I noticed that DropN900 was not synchronizing the spreadsheet files that I was editing on the phone. I save them in MS Excel (xls) for compatibility reasons. After some puzzling I realized that Gnumeric was not upgrading the date stamp of the file after modifying it when the file does exist before and is saved with the same filename.
