Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
How about these, would they be feasible?
Ctrl+tap/click = right mouse click menu i.e. in module area etc. Ctrl+ArrowLeft/ArrowRight = keyboard octave shift down/up Ctrl+ArrowUp/ArrowDown = change the master volume up/down Alt+P = pattern properties Alt+T = switch to timeline view (and back) Ctrl+T = show/hide Touch Theremin Alt+Backspace = delete selected module P.S.: I'm missing Donate button ;-) |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????

E.g. "...I find this app hard to use because I'm not sure what the icons do. What would be useful if you could show tooltips when I hover the mouse cursor over an icon. BTW I have created a mock-up of the UI and attached it to this post. I am no longer depressed and now very happy because I made a positive contribution with my comments..." Personally I think the UI is ok. Considering the real-time demands of an app like this, the UI benefits of not using a widget library (e.g. gtk and QT) are obvious. Not to mention how powerful this app is considering it is running an a mobile phone/computer. Very impressive. |

beautiful: 9 characters long; correct & intelligible b.u.tifull: 10 chars; incorrect double 'l'; takes longer to type/read than the word it's "abbreviating" conclusion: "beauty" is very much in the eye of the beholder </irony> seriously, never having used synth s/w before (on a desktop/laptop, never mind a phone!) I initially thought the UI was non-intuitive, a bit confused, and way too crowded. After 10 min's random tinkering, a quick read at the online doc's and one youTube demo, I now realise that the UI is a really neat piece of work, both technically and conceptually. A (hideable) real time spectrum analyzer graph, overlaid on top of an animated 'drag & drop' module designer, with fully resizable windows/objects and optional floating toolbars accessible from conventional drop-down menus ... come on! It may not be beautiful in a strictly aesthetic sense, but its ideally suited to it's sole purpose - making it possible to do a complex, real-estate hungry task like synth-based music design/playback, on such a small device. The fact that it does so with (so far) rock-solid stability, and with fantastic real time performance (on its initial Maemo release, remember) is to me way more important than how it looks. At worst, the UI is like a good tool-box: utilitarian, robust, everything within a hand's reach, and designed to be used rather than just looked at or shown off to friends. I'm not a synth or keyboard player, I'm a lapsed guitarist. This app is my fist introduction to the whole subject of electronic music and I wouldn't have gone near SunVox on any platform unless it had popped up on the TMO forum and aroused my curiosity. From posts here it sounded like it was a real, fully featured, "proper" synth app. I installed it mainly to see whether it lived up to the good press it was getting from seemingly knowledgable users. Posting a one-liner about disliking the UI is just lame, given the huge amount of effort that's clearly gone into this project. Within an hour of installing, a total synth noob like me managed to 'compose' a recognisable drum/base/melody. That is surely evidence of a good UI? I agree with Johnel that any such criticism, even if meant 100% positively, really needs to be backed up with some constructive feedback. How would YOU organise the hundereds of elements, options & functions present in the interface to make them more fit for purpose? @NightRadio - great job, nil illegitimi carborundum. |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
@bzbnd
have you ever designed an UI for such a compex software ? It is allways easy to criticise something, but could you do it better? if you thin that it makes you depressive, you can try an other color scheme define own colors. The Ui is very intuitive and has the freaky cool look you would expect from a tracker sequencer. It is so flexible and you always have a good overview on all nessesary functions. It is the coolest and most functional UI i have ever seen on a mobile device for a complex software. I also miss a donate button in the main menu..i also requested this function in the to do list of the warmplace.ru forum :-) |

Seeing your vid on youtube and assuming it's your own n900 that we see there, I figured there probably was some other keyboard configuration available. Hence the question :) @bzbnd I can't help but wonder whether you are actually capable of explaining what this "ugly app" actually does... |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
@pigro : I edited the word beautiful in my last post . plz accept my apology for my bad english
@lq_sunshine : I'm not a progrmmer and also not a designer . i just told my opinion about the UI . |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
ok, I have no problem with your English - I know from years of experience that it's vey difficult to have to communicate in a language that's foreign to you. I was being sarcastic to make a point, which is unfair if you are not a native English speaker.
I also understand that you are purely giving your own view as a user. Any app lives or dies by it's users' perceptions of it's functionality & usability, just as much as it's actual functionality/usability, so bad feedback is better than none. I do wonder though what use you have for the app if you find the UI so depressing & ugly, when there is no obvious better alternative being suggested (either by you or anyone else) and when experienced synth guys appear to think SunVox is in fact well designed. |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
@bzbnd
it is your taste and everybody has a different taste.i cand understand when you dont like the ui. it it is hard to meet everyones taste. for me the ui is not depressing but i had to try out a lot of color presets to find the right one for me. many of them didnt fit to me. Maybe you finde the right scheme. colors can have a strong influence to the user experience. But the functionality is very good.it ist intuitive and logical. I like the module structure, the sound networkt. You exactly know how the signal is routed and know about the controlers.. this is very helpful when using automation. my wishes for Key shortcuts. i dont know how to go up and down in the tracker editor. something like ctrl+left for up ctrl+left for one step up and ctrl+right for one step down changing the track works with shift left and right..thats nice i |

Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
just wondering if this app supports MIDI either using QMIDICtl (which, as i've yet to play with it, i think sends midi over wifi) or via usb midi interfaces (which i'm not sure drivers are as yet available for, but that is possibly due to no midi programs existing on the n900)
I'm a loong time octamed user, downloaded renoise and about to try to migrate, but if sunvox does everything renoise does then i might as well go that route, and have a portable version to play with.. |

Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
Again sorry for using bad adjs like ugly and depressive. this is a great app and it works very well . i told my opinion because i saw this app very useful and i tought better UI makes this app excellent .by the way thanks developers for their great work .

Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
If I may be so free to suggest a couple of things that would make, at least in my opinion, an already great app, to be even better. After an hour of experimenting with the tracker, there are some things IŽd love to see.
Wishlist SunVox New features 1. Probability/random factor for individual track notes and tracks as a whole. This allows for easier looping, with variations chosen by a random seed. For instance, to set the probability of the second basskick of a given beat to 50%, would result in a 50% chance that basskick is acually heard, the next time the loop is being played. This, of course could and should than also be implemented on tracklevel. 2. Ability to reverse a sample from the tracker. UI 1. Fast button access to common functions as mute/solo and such, at the top of each track. 2. Easier link/unlink/relink possibility. (Or am I missing something here?) |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
Quote:
2. Already exists :) Sample editor -> Samples tab -> Menu (under the wave) -> Transform -> Reverse. UI 1. yeah. in to-do list already :) 2. Click on the source module with the SHIFT key pressed. Drag a link to the destination module. |

Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
SunVox is a very nice program with a wonderful gui.
But for the moment I prefere csound which works well in easy-debian. I need the possibility of scripting. There is no scripting in the wunderful program sunVox. |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
Scripting will be in the next releases :) May be based on Pixilang programming language. But may be on some another language.
|
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
Any chance SunVox will support MIDI in? This would make the N900 the ideal phone to have along with a USB/Midi controller.

Anyways, is the idea to transmit midi over wifi to a computer with a midi interface and have that send data over physical cables? *Which, incidentally I think is the case for a lot of things, having just gone onto the tvcatchup website to try that out, it says at the top something along the lines of 'watch tv on your computer or iPhone' so people are going to assume that means that any other phone won't work, which may influence their decision when it comes to buying a phone.. Also, people say 'have you seen my iPhone?' and posts on facebook etc say sent via iPhone... We have none of this on the n900... EDIT: Sorry, Off-topic'ed myself in my own post there... |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
NightRadio!! You are my hero man!!
Can't thank you enough!!! |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
This app looks really useful, now I just need to read manual to figure out how to use it :) Thanks for your efforts!
|
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
Yes! Big thanks to NightRadio!!!
Wonderful work! |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
Tedri Mark,
sorry, at the moment i can't say how MIDI will be implemented on n900 technically. Now my main problem - add MIDI messages support to the SunVox architecture. |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
MIDI2Usb could be a good way to implement the physical part, I assume... Plenty of adaptors for hooking up old controllers to a computer, in that way. At least that's how I hook up a Midiboard to the computer.
I'd would be nice if the program could handle polyphonic aftertouch messages... But I'm getting carried away. ;) All thumbs up for NightRadio! |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
wonderful program, I made one small piece for my fish, and I like it.

EDIT: App won't output sound in 'silent' mode, even with headphones plugged in.
Must be Monday... |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
..i also have the problem with muted sound in silent mode but this seems to be a maemo specific problem. All my apps seem to be muted in silent mode except the mediaplayer and the phone.
@riverus .. nice to see that you share your music here.. i have to continue my music :-) |
Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
@lq_sunshine
Perhaps you know the answer to a question I have. Is there any way to combine tracks of different length and/or time measure? What I am trying to achieve is a finer grid to work on, for instance to make more refined drumfills. One of the ways I used to do that on my regular tracker is by combining either tracks of different length, id est, change them on the fly, program the fills, and change the length of the track back to the previous setting, or combine 4/4th and 6/8th to get there. I have been fiddling around but couldn't get it to work. Is that possible anyway? |

Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
@anthonie: At the times of Fast Tracker II I used to use doubled/trippled BPM tempo for the whole song to have more 'dense' grid for drumrolls etc.

Re: SunVox coming to N900!!!????
@devildriven
If you do not have zip/unzip installed, you'll need that. Unpack the thing (it's a complete set, even though it's ridiculously small (good programming here!) and contains all available platform versions) and browse with your file manager to the unpacked sunvox folder, in there you'll find the maemo folder with a deb. Just click it and HAM should open up to get it installed. I had a bit of trouble installing libgles1, so I ended up just picking a game that uses OpenGL (GLtron to be precise) and had libgles1 installed as a dependency of that game. If you do not like HAM, you can of course open a terminal, cd to the folder where your deb is located and install using Code:
dpkg -i <packagename> @cube48 I am not sure I understand what your approach would bring me. What I want is the ability to program triplets and the like. How would increasing the speed make that possible? |

Hi i am also a beginner with sunvox and don't know how to combine different time measure. Maybe it can be helpful to play with the delay/offset parameters of the notes so simulate a higher time resolution (e.g.to achieve a swing effect) I think nightradio is the one who knows the answers.. |

Only, as sayd cube48 and lq_sunshine in their posts. But i put this feature to the SunVox to-do list. |
