Until one day, after updating to PR 1.3, I came to realize that my phone is charging again  Somehow, flashing the firmware (both emmc and firmware) did not help, but updating OTA fixed it. I have no idea why... Anyways, my advise for you is to flash your device - I think something from extra-devel might have messed your system up (in my case, I think it was the power-kernel). I think phones should have different ports for charging and data connectivity.... I used to have my N95, N80 and I never get this kind of charging problems.... I've always bought nokia phones, however nowadays I see great android, apple , blackberry phones. Maybe now it's time to change... until nokia releases meego phones, maybe N9. I think my N900 has a hardware issue. Here in my country is very difficult to find spare or good technical service. So I think I must get a new phone... I hope Meego could put nokia phones in the top of the list. It's going to be dificult to defeat android and apple mobile operative systems. Thanks for your advice.... |

In the past when I've problem with the charging socket of other phones (it happened quite frequent to me I don't know why) I'd just reply on the external charger until I switch to next phone. Don't just throw away your N900 just because of such minor issue that can be worked around. |

I could get an external charger and extra battery... It's cheaper than a new phone... I could keep my n900 in this way until nokia releases first meego smartphone.... and in this time I could save enough money for this new phone!!! |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
sjgarciav, I either missed it or you didn't answer me - did you, or did you not try reflashing you phone (both firmware and emmc)?

I have reflashed firmware pr 1.3 and emmc twice!!! Nothing happens both times (I used maemo flasher in windows)... I still have the problem... So my conclusion is that I have a hardware issue... However why usb data connection works great... and usb wall charging connection is not recognized?... My charger is ok.. I used succesfully with other phones!!! Thanks for you advices. |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
Is this the same charger you got bundled in the box with your N900 when you bought it?

In this case I ran out of ideas :o
Anyways, I recommend you get an external charger, they don't cost a lot and they could temporary solve your problem, until you've found a better solution :) |

I had 1:1 the same problem as you, data works perfect always, charging from wall / car problematic - excluding the samsung charger which did work. I did although have to plug it 2 or 3 times several times. |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
Hi....
Yesterday, I installed this apps: - Enhanced kernel for power users. - Enhanced kernel for power users. (settings). - QCPUFreq. - Swappolube. Today I tried to charge my phone with wall charger and works great!!!! It works perfectly I tried many times and all is OK when phone is on or off. I think that Enhanced kernel for power users helps to solve the problem, maybe there was an issue with microusb kernel drivers... However, in other posts I forget to tell that sometimes (not always) when I tried to turn on the phone, It starts and enless loop showing me the white screen whith nokia nlue letters then the black screen whit five white points.... To solve this I connect the wall charger, then the endless loop stops and the phone swich off by itself. After that I swich on the phone with the wall charger connected and the phone starts correctly. I realized also that when I put the battery into the phone, the device vibrates, and try to swich on automatically, then the enless loop starts. Well, this is a minor issue, I can live with this... However if someone have an andvice please tell me. However wall charger works great!!!!!! |

Good to see that at least you got it sorted (even though in a strange way), sjgarciav :)

Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
Bad news....
Today I connected my phone to my pc in order to synchronize my playlists. After that I tried to charge my phone with wall charger..... the charger was not recognized again!!!! The problem come back.... So sad.... Actually I don't really know what to do in order to solve this issue (permanently). Why why why??? I don't understand this strange phone behaivor.... Does anyone knows if Nokia have made an official announcement about this charging problems in n900 devices??? |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
Did you try turning it off and try to charge it, or if that doesn't help - removing the battery for about 1 hour, and then putting it back and turning it on and try to charge?

I also flashed pr1.3 and emmc againg, this time I used GLOBAL bin instead of USA distribution. However I still have the problem. The question is: Why my phone start to charge normally with wall charger after I installed power kernel until I connected to a pc???? It seems like when I connected the phone to the pc, immediatly the phone couldn't recognize the wall charger.... Maybe is not a HW issue... If there is a HW issue wall charger never works..... However wall charger works sometimes.... Today I get a new samsung 800mA microusb charger.... However I still have the problem. I give up.... Thanks everyone that give me advices. |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
Use an external BL-5J battery charger to charge your batteries in the meanwhile, thats what I did... I think that there's something wrong with the micro-usb jacket driver, maybe some kind of a rare bug, which is causing all this trouble.

Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
I just discover this usefull trick:
Well, anyone knows that my phone doesn't recognize the wall charger. However I've always tried this with wall charger connected to the electric outlet. So check this: Just a few minutes ago, I connected the wall charger to the phone, but the wall charger was not connected to the electric outlet. Then, I disconnect the wall charger from the phone, after that I connect the wall charger to the electric outlet and then I connect the wall charger to the phone..... So.... the phone recognizes immediatly the wall charger and started to charge!!!! I repeated this proces like 5 times and It works great.... It's kind of tricky. However It works, maybe It could be usefull for someone. The rule is: disconnect the wall charger from the electric outlet, the connect the wall charger to the phone, then disconnect the wall charger from the phone, then connect the wall charger to the electric outlet and then connect the wall charger to the phone... and then.... the phone recognize the wall charger and starts to charge!!!!! I almost forget.... this time I connect the phone to my pc is usb/pc suite mode in between the times that I tested the wall charger, and the trick works great.... I hope this could be the final solution, because it works even if the phone is turned off..... |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
I was having a similar problem. Phone just wouldn't charge properly and kept dying and crashing one day (think it was the v45 kernel update)
Eventually I got stuck on the 5 dots of death and taking out the battery didn't help. Booting in R&D mode didn't help. Repeated reflashing of memory and emmc didn't help. Also the phone wouldn't charge. I bought a desktop charger and charged the battery up full and it fixed it....sorta now my usb port is fooked it seems, keep getting insufficient power message and disconnects and reconnects every 5 secs in usb mode. My bros G2 charger is nice and tight and is the only thing that charges it now (i bought 2 new nokia chargers). Whats worse is now every time I take out the battery to charge on the desktop charger my clock resets! And around 1 in 5 boots it gets stuck on the 5 dots of death. What the FOOK is goin on! |

1. Go to a Nokia care facility and have your phone repaired or even replaced. 2. Try and buy a new battery - it sounds like your current battery might be faulty... |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
Hi
Have you been able to resolve your charging problem. I have exactly the same problem with my N900, it does not charge from AC but charges from the PC-USB port!! I have sent it in for repair to Nokia. cheers!! Quote:

Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
i don't know if my problem is similar...
but i tried charging my phone with the USB converter (which is the small wire like device that converts micro USB to 2 other types of charging ports for older nokia devices) ... and everything seemed normal, battery icon was charging, the notification of 'Battery Charging' pops out but eventually when i plug it out after some time, it's just like it did not charge at all... |

Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
I just got this problem - PC no longer sees phone with USB cable, batteries no longer charge while phone is running.
However, I can get batteries to charge if I leave the phone switched off, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds. I have been using power-kernel for months with no problems. I suspect heat-stress damage or humidity could be to blame, as I am in Thailand and have been using the phone heavily in quite high ambient temperatures. Although it is also possible that the USB port received some physical damage, in spite of the fact it does not wobble at all. |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
Had the same problem. re-installed standard kernel solved it for me. Afterwards I went to power42 not 46 and it is still working.

Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
I have little bit similar problems. During the day I have phone charging in USB port and heavy load in it (bluetooth kbd, mouse, headphone, S-video active etc...). Sometimes I get the "Not enough power to charge" message.
Now, if I miss that message everything seems ok untill I disconnect phone from USB port (or phone suddenly shuts down). Then I get low battery immediately. The annoying problem is that if I then connect phone to wall or car charger, it seems it won't charge. I get normal charging message and all, but even after long time in wall charger I get low battery immediately after disconnecting it from charger. To get it charging, I had to turn the phone off, then turn it on and after it has turned on completely, connect wall charger. It is sometimes difficult, when phone is shutting down immediately because of low charge. |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
i had the same problem, but it went away when i replaced my battery with the spare battery wich i carried with me. i dont know what is up with the broken battery but seems it wont charge and it does not have any charge left and if i plug the charger in (when broken battery is installed) my N900 flashes yellow led once, as if there is not battery at all.
oh, and guess what is written on original nokia N900 when you remove the sticker around the battery? -it says samsung :D |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
I have power42 and i have the same issue.
However! I found out that Conky has correct information if the battery is Charging ( C ) or Discharging ( D ). My normal charger works fine, but with some usb cables the status-icon says it is charging but it is actually not! In this case conky says D. So trust conky :) (I have conky full btw) Edit: Btw i'm in Netherland so the N900 can handle some high humidity. I think the problem is that with the power kernel it has not enough with only 500 mA aka 2,5 watt. |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
Killerdemon, interesting that you mention humidity!
This was my suspicion (I'm in hot n' humid Thailand right now) and so I bought a bag of rice and stuck my phone inside for a while. I also sucked air through the USB port, using my mouth, as blowing is not recommended. This method could have drawbacks too, of course! Now the charger has worked every time I have tried it! I can't say it's fixed yet, but it looks promising. |
Re: N900 Charging problem - cause: unknown, solution: available!
i dont know if this has been mentioned before ,but i want to inform you in case you dont know this .
N900 can be charged by HTC mobile chargers : i can confirm this on HTC desire ,you may test others as if you want to . Enjoy ! |
