Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
so does installing this override the 'stable' firefox, or do they install independently? I want to try this out but not if it means losing the current version.
Also, for browser discussion, Macuco is pretty good too. I have opera, firefox and macuco and although i invariably use microb, i use all of them depending on what i need the web for. |
Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
The browser is still too 'bouncy' tapping on the link slides to the menu or tab views. Would be nice if you had to pull them out like microb imo

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
Happy to see Fennec/FF get better and better. But....
Keyboard shortcut are must-have for me. Also, switching tabs using keyboard should be supported - even Java base web browser like UCWeb does nicely. |
Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
whats the build guys? It shows me as Firefox 3.6.5pre/Fennec 1.1 from about browser. Is this the latest one announced on 10/4? I installed it from www.mozilla.com/en-US/m/beta

http://moff.mozilla.com/latest-beta/.../binary-armel/ 1.1 is ooold beta. I don't know how Mozilla managed to point you to it. Some out-of-date link. New beta is version 2, recently renamed to 4 to match desktop Firefox. You will get 4.0b2 at http://moff.mozilla.com/latest-beta/.../binary-armel/ However, as posted above in this thread, you can get nightly (the most recent, daily updated) version 4.0b3pre Quote:

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
Fennec will be the best browser for Maemo if they can solve the resource hogs. Which i think are the main reason why people have different experience how fast it is. Functional wise it is awesome.
I miss a cursor mode though.. or some good way of selecting text and similar. I like the MicroB zooming better.. don't like when it autozoom on click (guess it is an option i can change somewhere). |
Re: Fennec 4 beta 3

Anyone else having problem with loading pages. Maybe half of the pages i try to load give me a error that firefox cannot load the page. Same problem with beta 2 and this.

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
I like UI of MicroB better, and the swirl-zoom is great of course. However, I like the tabs a lot in Fennec. And of course the more modern rendering/javascript engines.
I think Fennec uses way too much RAM and N900 simply doesn't have enough available memory to handle it much of the time. Just like everything else on N900, once you're hitting swap everything slows down like hell... I wonder how it runs in Android? I thought android devices don't have swap. Perhaps the OS just has a smaller memory footprint. |

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
how can i open *.xpi by Fennec 4 beta 3 ,it`s always open by MicroB

/home/user/........... 2. If after finding the folder and clicking the file Fennec: ignores/downloads/opens with MicroB this file, then Fennec still has the bug. You might have to install Firefox 1.1 in order to install an .xpi and then install Fennec 4 to see whether the add-on/extension works with the latest version. |
Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
Wheres the portrait virtual keyboard though?! :(
Why do browsers incl MicroB offer portrait browsing without the fecking portrait keyboard! |

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
3 people already asked and got no reply. How does one enable Flash in the nightly build? Or is it impossible?
Someone please answer this. Thanks. |
Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
Been using the new beta for long enough to say, "Wow, what an improvement". Hopefully the development keeps building in the right direction, some performance tweaks and whatnot and the final could be a winner in the mFF vs MicroB stakes.
I was slightly disheartened by the near unusable mess of the first official release but this has just pricked my interest. |
Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
Still run like shyt. Slow as hell like usual. Takes forever to load up my page and that is unacceptable. BMicro load up almost instantly.

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
MicroB is also pre-launched when the OS starts up. (MicroB's "browserd" process runs silently in the background all the time, so that browser windows can be opened faster.)
There's been some work on letting Fennec pre-start in the background like MicroB does: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=572329 |

Iunno, seems like the ff I had before. Kinda slow, slow startup, mobile site versions..
Iunno, opera and microb feel faster and easier. |
Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
have installed beta 4 today and every site with flash content crashes.

Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
I'm gonna give it a shot, seems like a beta 4 release shouldn't have this crashing issue.

What about WebGL.
Is it implemented? |
Re: Fennec 4 beta 3
I am using the fennec 4 beta since beta 1 and I'm upgrading it every few days to the latest nightly build.
Its really fast to use already, and scrolling seems even smoother than with microb. Its also using slightly less memory (quite incredible) and I'm not even counting the mem usage of the browserd daemon that's always running. Start-up time is ok, though not quite as fast as microB (and I doubt that it will ever be as fast as microb as it has its browserd daemon running all the time). But on the other hand I observed that while microb starts really fast, it takes a long time until it loads the first site, so I think that it still has to load its browsing engine. Therefore I think it doesn't really take any longer to display the first site on fennec even if the GUI starts up slower. There are still some shortcomings though: -There's no possibility to enable the mouse pointer you can activate to select text. -Flash (should be fine later on though) -not all plugins are working right now -the chat panel in facebook (and similar panels on few other sites) aren't staying on the bottom of the screen when scrolling I still prefer to use fennec instead of microb, except for some sites like facebook or when I need to copy some text, etc... |
