To me it is working.

I have a question.

What if I need the external keyboard is in a language and keyboard of the N900 in another? How I can do? Is that I change the language on the two keyboards at once.

First of all calm down man.

Second:

1. Open Application Manager and make sure you have extras-devel repository enabled. If not click here http://repository.maemo.org/extras/i...mantle.install
2. Select Update
3. Go back to Application Manager main menu and select Download
4. Select System
5. Find extkbd(External Keyboard Support) and install it by clicking on it and following instructions.

Third:
You have been asked several times to provide some useful feedback so I can polish things and you are replying with "xkbd-data bla bla" . If you continue with this attitude I will just ignore your messages in future. Think about simple fact that you are not paying me (or anyone at TMO) for development or support.

And please would you explain me how you can be sick with application you cannot install. And it is your fault that you cannot install it, not mine, trust me.

No, you can have different languages on internal and external keyboard. Just select what you need from UI. The only restriction is that when you switch language on one keyboard, the language on other is also switched (in set of languages it is set up).

Re: [ANNOUNCE] External Keyboard Support - extkbd

I ask because I have an external keyboard has no keys charaters in languages like Spanish. The N900 does have those keys Tenma.

When connecting an external keyboard the N900 loses its settings and vice versa.

With the 1.x versions did not. Separately maintained "layout."

in xterm:
sudo gainroot
apt-get update
apt-get install extkbd

copy the output and place it here, so i can check what is wrong

and BTW what happens when you click on External Keyboard in settings

Is it safe to remove using app manager? I read somewhere it could make your n900 reboot endlessly...

I see.

Boy, what is written on very first page on this thread is following

UPDATE: Seems that there is a conflict with bt-hid-scripts package, will try to resolve it and will upload fixed version. For now you should deinstall bt-hid-scripts before installing extkbd.

re error message when you start extkd - that is normal, once you configure at least one keyboard , the message will not appear anymore.

Mostly worked for me, although one time I had to delete and re-pair my BT keyboard to get any characters to go through, and the control panel crashed the first time I tried to access it.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] External Keyboard Support - extkbd

It flashed up an error on one of those gold popup bars very quickly about not being able to find some file (I remember it had /hal/ in it's path) I didn't have time to read it all. So it never left the settings window when I clicked on External Keyboard. But when I clicked it again it worked.

"Cannot open /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/99-x11-external-keyboard.fdi - no such file or directory" - the message is normal, it appears if you do not have any configured keyboards, so no crash ;)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] External Keyboard Support - extkbd

Found one other problem - after the first reboot after installing the app, the custom internal keyboard layout I used to have has been reset to default. I'm guessing the default layout file was packaged with extkbd, maybe it should use the existing one instead.

What is that?interface looks nice by the way.

It is not written exclusively for BT keyboards, USB is suported too, see first page. What other kinds of keyboards could be connected to n900?

What happens when you press Save button on UI? And will you please zip and attach /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/99-x11-external-keyboard.fdi here.

For me they are set correctly when using pc105 (US, standard). However, sometimes a few of the keys do not react very well; the RH shift key, RH space bar and up button. May be hardware related though, I will test on my Symbian phone later.

By the way, it also tends not to work when it reconnects. Or maybe it just sometimes doesn't work at all for some time, it's a bit hard to tell since it's so irregular. After some time it may start working again.
When it does work, the number keys are set correctly.

(I have a Dell Think Outside keyboard, a rebranded Stowaway)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] External Keyboard Support - extkbd

Could be related to bluetooth. Sometimes it is a battle for me too to connect simultaneously bt mouse and keyboard, have to switch bt on and off, to reconnect devices, etc. Nothing to be done here.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] External Keyboard Support - extkbd

Just some (stupid) questions as I'm currently stuck with a non-working layout. I have extkbd 1.0.1, xkb-data-extkbd 1.8-1-2m5 and bt-hid-scripts 0.12-2fremantle1 installed and now can pair my chinfai keyboard (two days ago I even didn't succeed pairing it, might be related to latest update of bt-hid-scripts). But it doesn't work satisfactorily at all and I can't figure out were the problem is.

What it does:
After manual pairing I can use parts of the keyboard. After switching kb off I have to manually unpair it (or what is it called when dividing them?).

What it does not:
No automatic pairing after switching keyboard on and no automatic unpairing after switching it off.
After pairing I can only use lowercase letters (i.e. <shift> doesn't work), I can't use any key except for letters (a-z), <left> (triggered by <down>), <right> and sometimes <tab> (triggered by some special key for webbrowser). Numbers are created by longpressing a key in the upper row as well as special characters are mapped to the letters they are on internal keyboard. In short: the layout is similar to the internal one but with less working keys.

Now, that's the point where this app should jump in and change the layout, right? But I just can't get any different layout to work. I tried german mapping, UK, USA, different layouts (105 key, 102 key, 101 key) but there is absolutely no change. I also always repaired the device in case the changes only affect new pairing.

Do I miss something? There is no error shown and the keyboard keeps on working at its very low level. And what can I do about automatic pairing/unpairing?

Sorry if these questions are already answered but I'm actually completely confused with all these different threads, wiki pages and snippets everywhere. I just want my keyboard to work at least like the internal one, that would be an awesome beginning!

Thanks for any help!

EDIT: Firmware is 1.3 and kernel is kernel-power 46. Any other info needed?

EDIT2: automatic pairing / unpairing now seems to work but it takes ages!

Why Bluetooth keyboard is necessary to install Bluetooth HID scripts?

freemangordon 2010-11-29 21:53

Re: [ANNOUNCE] External Keyboard Support - extkbd

@x-lette Try to uninstall bt-hid-scripts and reinstall extkbd, although I have no idea in what condition is your system after installing both bt-hid-scripts and extkbd. And also could you attach /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/99-x11-external-keyboard.fdi here, so I can check what are your actual settings
