Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

Hm...I'm debating putting a bounty on getting this running natively on the maemo device line.
With Android's help it has brought things much closer.
And after looking deep into the guts of this...
there is good news and weird news...
libgtk1.2-dev and libglib1.2-dev are available for the older n800 and oldest 770 via "deb farm" catalog ..these are 2 dependencies which gtkgep relies on.
For the n900 gtkgep is being looked into by another member...but I won't mention by name directly without that person's "ok" .

For the n800 / n810 ...it is a hairier fur-ball to cough up.
Natively on gregale / chinook / diablo....
Installing libglib1.2-dev and libgtk1.2-dev directly ...even in using one of the earliest firmwares results in "incompatible armel". It just won't install...from turbo down to gregale.
Bits of libglib and libgtk are possible to install via programs like xmms which require them...but I don't know of any programs for n8x0 which specifically use the -dev variant of the needed libs...so a wee bit stuck there...(unless some program I didn't know about that has what is needed to install the -dev's is brought to my attention... that is)...
Non-natively ..
On Easy Debian...I'm still mucking about with that ...libglib1.2-dev and libgtk1.2-dev are available via lenny...however lenny has been put to pasture and archived ...the libs are still available ...albeit awkward to get at...sound via easy debian on n8x0 has been known to be "fun" to set up ..so in all ...it is likely quite possible to get gtkgep running via easy debian for the n8x0 ...but it sure isn't fun from where I'm standing....we'll see.

In all I'm thinking that perhaps KotCzarny may be the one of the best people who could suss out getting gtkgep (or some alteration of it) to work. (I'll have to pm him and ask...)
and perhaps rzr will have some ideas...he fiddled with ExEf back in the day....I'll have to sit down and write him as well ...

For the 770....well 770 users will be laughin' and dancin' over this....
technically it shouldn't be a problem to install the needed libs as long as the tablet firmware (meaning maemo 2) is old enough to accommodate them...
...once the gtkgep armel.deb is functional it should work pretty much seamlessly with the 770.

So yeah...
It'll be great to have this on the n900 and the 770...
and whether the program functions under gtk or gtk+ or python or whatever.. I don't care if it must be revamped to function ...
I want to see a functioning effects processor on the n8x0 devices.
So that leads me right back to statement number 1.
I 'm seriously considering a bounty for a fully functioning gtkgep (or an altered variant ) on our device line

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

Sooooo close.
with Android's help I'll be testing for the n900 shortly...
just finished doing some testing with one of my n810's
installing xmms in diablo turbo actually does (seem to) bring the dependencies needed with it I believe.
since installing the altered (for n900) libgtkgep0 and gtkgep worked without issues of any sort at all...gtkgep shows up in the menu under extras even ..
but since this specific gtkgep was optified for n900 (and I really wasn't expecting miracles here) it did not respond when initiated...nothing...
in xterm initiating it by typing gtkgep resulted in one statement "illegal instruction" ...I was expecting some resistance but am very surprised I got that far....if gtkgep is tweaked for the n8x0 then I do believe we are a hop and skip away from a proper musical instrument effects processor.

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

With Android 808's help
got the gtkgep interface working on n900...
now it is just figuring the mic to start pipe into gtkgep and then of course pipe to the output...the upper main window normally shows the expected route " /dev/dsp" ...
I do show the method for piping it through in the antiX instructions...
but I don't know if we have anything comparable to "oss-compat" which we can install...
there is mention of oss-compat via easy deb on n900 but it went unanswered and I'd imagine unresolved..
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=54756
I'm out of my depth concerning the intricacies of audio on the n8x0 / n900...and what it would entail to get it piping through properly...

I'm going to fiddle with an n810 and get it up to speed...see if I can get it to the same point as the n900..

update: everything installed without a hitch ..again ...but ..naw the optification is meant for the n900 so gtkgep still won't initiate on the n800...so am not too surprised there.

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

On the same yet slightly sub-topic'd
peripherals-wise...
currently I use a stereophonic pickup perfect for the low and high ends of the soundbox somewhat similar to this...
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Schatten-CH-3...item54155527fc

Mine is much more expensive and isn't as invasive than that one...and I input-it into the mic port on one of my toshiba portege m780's (convertible laptop tablet with stylus and finger touchscreen) on which (I now have changed favourite distros for music creation to....) I'm using antiX 15 x64 with rakarrack ..(and now) gtkgep (and a few other programs as well) manipulate sound on-the-fly-while-playing and then output the processed sound live to either my headphones or a couple of amps...

Don't need fancy expensive pickups...
I also have a few oysters that are more than fine for the job...producing good quality sound...you can get away with any of these numbers..
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/SOHO-ACOUSTIC...item2a27cd13dd
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Schaller-721-...item3f4df1e1f3
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/SCHALLER-723-...item339c6ee994
(In fact I have a couple Schaller oyster pickups..
they haven't changed their look either...
I've had mine since I was 20...more than 25 years ago now...
and they still work like new.. good durable workmanship in Schaller...
And then just about any musical instrument can be amplified...from harps, lutes, violins, guitars right on down to the tone box and kalimba ....:D
So it really does allow for virtually anyone to pick up a musical instrument and electrify it. :D)

add a couple cheap gold-plated 1/8to1/4 or 1/4to1/8 male to female..female to male ..male to male...whatever you need frankly to connect from and to...and they are stupid cheap ..under $5 each...

I imagine this (below) would work adequately for gtkgep for the n900...and I wonder if the 770 and n8x0's could also utilize this plugged into the headphone jack on 770 / n8x0 device and outputting via mic adapter out to the end-users choice of pickup and the headphone adapter out to the end-users choice into headphones...or into computer for whatever additional work and then outing from computer into headphones or amp(s) ...or simply out to amp(s).

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

I think there may possibly be some avenues of approach to properly piping the sound from the mic-in through said gtkgep and then out....
the essesntial /dev/dsp
esddsp
libesd0
functional on both n8x0 and n900
what references I found related to xmms and other audio programs
here...
http://n8xx.com/topic5340-devdsp.html
https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enlightened_Sound_Daemon
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...ghlight=esdcat
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...ghlight=esdcat
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...sd0-dev&page=3
and If memory serves in diablo turbo esd I believe is a running process accessible in ASUI under "settings" - "services"
and is available as well for fremantle...
whether or not it will prove viable for gtkgep ...
or resorting to ALSA will have to be done in it's stead is an unknown (unknown at this point that is...)

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

gtkgep compiled and runs, but expects oss audio subsystem, i'll try to convice it to use something else (for example libao, this way it will work on both n8x0 and n900)

endsormeans 2015-07-15 14:22

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

ah..
you got it (the interface that is...) running on an n810?
and yes it wishes oss-compat...
libao ...eh? humhumhum...a whole world of audio wonder I have discovered just by meandering down the gtkgep path :D

not yet, playing with n900 right now (compiled glib, gtk, imlib and gtk-engines and ran everything from /opt/gtkgep)

KotCzarny 2015-07-15 17:15

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

ok, hacked in the pulseaudio in place of oss and it seems to work. without headphones it makes too much looping noise though ;)

KotCzarny 2015-07-15 17:31

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

upped build to:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/oscp...ar.gz/download

unpack to /opt then run /opt/gtkgep/bin/gtkgep-mksymlinks after that you can run it from terminal via: gtkgep or /opt/gtkgep/bin/gtkgep.sh

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

hehe...yeah I'm sure there is feedback due to such close proximity of the mic to the onboard speaker.
The only way past that is outting the headphone to either:
A- external speakers / amps (far away enough from device to halt the feedback loop)
or
B- to headphones
or
C- to your old beater stereo speakers in the garage :D
or
D- to a mic-input on a computer to do whatever you please and output via computer headphone output jack to whatever...headphones or speakers or amps...

So you got it running only for the n900 I take it?
or will what you posted also work on the 770 and n8x0?
and if so...
is it possible to use something like this for the 770 and n8x0?
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/3-5mm-Stereo-...item56700481fd
I'm sure it will work for the n900....
but I'm not sure a combined mic-in headphone-out meant for a devices headphone port would function with the 770 n8x0

KotCzarny 2015-07-15 17:47

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

nope, it's compiled in n900's scratchbox with pulseaudio, so it's only for n900. want me to hack esd audio for n8x0 too?

KotCzarny 2015-07-15 17:50

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

as for the cable splitter it could work. if it doesn't, you can always destroy nokia's headphones ;) those 1button ones are cheap and plentiful anyway

endsormeans 2015-07-15 17:51

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

sure! :D
If I'm gonna feedback flog and roast a device in my studio...it may as well be one of my beater n8x0's... :D
So will said method you posted run on the n8x0?

KotCzarny 2015-07-15 17:53

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

which method? my weak side is quickposting and losing context easily. you can join #maemo on irc for quick talk

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

ah just grabbed the file from your link there...your gtkgep variant is I assume specifically for the n900 and won't work for the n8x0 I assume...

yeah ...having a gtkgep variant for the n8x0 would be good ...
I have more of them to burn than n900's ....

hehe..it's been so long since I've used my irc ...I've forgotten my passwords....hell ...I've forgotten too many passwords for too many things lately..
I'm going to have to sit down and get myself another login for it...
that I'll have to do later today....
But I will get my arse back on irc by tonight...

KotCzarny 2015-07-15 18:06

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

you don't need logins and passwords for irc (not for ircnet/freenode anyway), unless you need cloaking or something. also, you won't damage speakers via a feedback. unless you hit resonance freq. but still, i guess use case for it is mic/headphones

endsormeans 2015-07-15 18:23

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

Naw..I was having some serious issues with my old irc....just got busy and didn't have time for dealing with it...

endsormeans, feel free to forward my dropbox link to KotCzarny if it helps with packaging.

KotCzarny 2015-07-15 19:43

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

just for future reference.. good mic (preferably highly directional) + gtkgep + n900 + n900's fm transmitter == rock'n'roll in the shop! we need packaging and a cool name now

note2: n8x0 have half-duplex audio, so without usb audio card or some network streaming (in or out) there's nothing we can do. unless i'm mistaken and it's the esddsp wrapper problem

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

On one of my n900's
It.
Works.
Fabulously.

I love it....
Now I just need a decent smartphone holder / clamp for my instruments....

The only 2 drawbacks to it are the font sizes (need magnifiers for that) and the fact opening a window pretty much makes the new window dominate the screen...not so easy on-the-fly...
Larger font and a tabbed interface would work so much better and smoothly for sure.
As far as the n8x0 goes...
How is it looking?
Is such an effects processor program even doable for Diablo?
After keeping up with the troubleshooting on #maemo until last night...it looked like a snarly nightmare..that's for sure...

KotCzarny 2015-07-16 15:22

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

1/ i've made buttons bigger already in current source, but font isn't changeable because maemo's xserver lacks the support for bitmap fonts (it uses only builtin ones and ttf)
2/ i'm going to try making config windows float (it's an idea for now though)
3/ n8x0 recording side is ugly, max you can get is 8kHz mono (at least with internal soundcard, external usb might be some way). right now i have it 'working' using alsa interface, but can't get clear sound without clicks, so nothing worth sharing, yet

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

#3 - yeah...I read somewhere recently that the n8x0 piped 8khz in certain situations...can't remem. where I read it though..
I wondered long time gone now about the onboard n8x0 mic and the probable lack of running it through the headphone port like on the n900....and wondered whether or not mic via usb port would be a viable option...even doable...haven't yet looked it up to see if it could be done ...

endsormeans 2015-07-16 15:52

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

Hmmm...
yeah...8khz..keep running into mentions on it...

What about using whatever external mic / pickup..
In my case ..something like what I previously suggested...
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/SCHALLER-723-...item339c6ee994
a 1/4" female to 1/8" male gold-plated adapter to this...
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/5-in-1-Jabees...item3f4e3e2316
and cancel the receiving and just utilize the calling and simply bluetooth pickup sound into the n8x0 ...into gtkgep and out through the n810 headphone port...

or as far as mics go ...
something like this bluetoothed into the n8x0...
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Bluetooth-Wat...item2c8b48aa5d
(hehee...who buys one for the shower?!?!?! It's like the toilet phone of the 70's! :D)
and then run it through gtkgep and out the n8x0 headphone port....

Would any of that bypass the 8khz wall I keep reading about ..I wonder?...
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=116572
"...Maemo Recorder records WAVs only at 8 kHz...."
or would it get piped through it nonetheless?...

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

yup ..KotCzarny's kciconsbox really does a great job for gtkgep on n8x0 ...
(not to mention other progs that have a prob seemingly when "disappearing-yet still-running" when reduced for the n8x0)
definitely a must have utility...

afaik it is only available for nxx0 ...
it has been a challenge thus far [from my pov :D] to get it on n8x0 and n900...

you'd have to ask Android 808 or KotCzarny whether they are or could [even..if it is possible] wrangle it for harmattan.

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

Heya Saponga!
:D

ok...soooo...
what I've done is put every bit of work done on gtkgep thus far into a master folder on my google drive for everyone to grab and play with.
this includes alot of work not just for the nxx0 but also for proper distros such as openmandriva, mandriva, mandrake, and (my fav.) antix. (in 86_64 and i386 and i586 )

It is easier to manage on a larger screen I've found on my touchscreen convertible laptop...

It is far more convenient to use with a nxx0 clamped to one of my harps though.

Under the file folder "gtkgep for nxx0"
there is a great deal of work.
not just for the n900 either.
but for the n8x0 as well.

In total the work comprised here is the totality (to my knowledge) of all the work on gtkgep by android808, Kotczarny, and myself.

Kotczarny's work works well...(I have found some background static which is quite loud and attribute it to the headphone jack microphone/headphone splitter I use and haven't gotten around to testing different ones to see if that is where the issue is stemming from yet)

Android's version worked well (if memory serves ..it has been a while)

the fact of the matter is with the n900 it is possible to use on the headphone port a male to headphone / mic female splitter. Just get a decent one.
Or
use the onboard device mic and use the headphone port for "sound out" ...meanwhile making sure proximity for the mike is sufficient to capture what audio you wish.

with the n8x0 there is the need to use either the onboard mic and the headphone out port
Or
the necessity of utilizing a usb sound card...
(I haven't found a sound card yet that has worked properly and I've gone through 3 different ones so far.)

with the n8x0 there is the additional necessity of using kciconsbox (by Kot) to recover reduced windows (needed in this case for the n8x0)

ALSO:
input and / or output via bluetooth or wifi to an external device and from there utilizing whatever tech it is connected to is feasible.

AND:
it is HIGHLY recommended (by me :D) to make sure that you utilize either wireless remote out ( ie: bluetooth or wifi) or the headphone port out (to headphones, amp, computer then to amp, or whatever combination you can think of...tried ...I like verrrryyyy much) to distance your output from your mic input (whether using the onboard mic or an external mic) to prevent feedback from occurring ...which could fry your device...U BIN WARN-ED!

In said gtkgep for nxx0 folder there is a txt file of instructions.
easy-peasy.

In all during brainstorming there was mention that:
A)- sox would make a good instrument effects processor for the nxx0 (all it needs is the gui).
B)- jack-rack would work well (haven't tried it yet) since we do have jackd for the n8x0 (at least in theory :D)
it "should" work even in easy deb squeeze...(yet again haven't tried it in easy deb squeeze)
C)- ladspa is available for the n8x0 ...so technically ...it would be possible to build an app of pretty much any kind for effects processing.
D)- frankly I'm using gtkgep now and holding out for when I get rakkarack running on the nxx0 since I think it's interface is easier to deal with and it is farrrrr less wasteful than other effects processors gui's for wasting screen space real estate..rakk tends to be pretty compact and tight with it's management ...even though everyone will need reading glasses to use it :D (thank goodness for resistive screens and styli ...eh? :D)
which leads to
E)- either the above works out fine for the nxx0
or the neo900....
failing them all...
my need will then have me purchasing a sony viao ux since it can run debian full os's and it has "headphone-out" AND "mic-in" ports....thus negating a great deal of horsesh@t I have to deal with...while maintaining my linux effects processing and form factor needs I have with portability with my harps...
(I intend by the spring-summer to have a photo or two or a video uploaded of my current nxx0 setup with one of my harps...hopefully)

the link to my google drive gtkgep folder is here
https://drive.google.com/folderview?...Dg&usp=sharing

If anyone wishes to putter and make a better version of anything...
go for it.
please do.
I must admit we could really use more of this kind of work done.

Updated added and revised this post ...
please note the changes.

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

btw. oscp has some effects ported from sox (and added crude ui to twiddle them). maybe i should add virtual file to make it play line-in? but without some arm/neon wizard optimizing the code it might be too much for poor nxx0. i will add it and see how well it would work later this week, poke me if i forget.

EDIT: Tinkering a bit more, although without a guitar yet, i`m curious about if i will manage to play with that delay. I`ll try later and report back. How about you guys ?

me ....wish I could find a decent splitter where I won't get a ton of noise.
so for the time being for me it is using any of these 3:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...Nokia_N900.JPG
and it's onboard mic
to out with this:

to either a pair of these:

or out to this:
http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs138/...6/img/2159.png
and then back to headphones.
or straight to this:
http://c1.zzounds.com/media/quality,...466e7aca1d.jpg
or through the m780 then to the marshall...
or to a rp155 multi effects box:
http://www.gearnuts.com/images/items...155-xlarge.jpg
then to headphones or to one of my marshalls or to my m780 then to my headphones or the marshall...

Options are heaven
Hell is none...

We need more real time effects processor programs ...rakkarack ...preferrably....

sorry for lack of input lately. I'd like to be able to remove the GTK1 requirement at some stage for N900 and potentially to aid some one in porting to Harmattan. Be it replacing GTK1 with Qt4 or GTK2.

Unfortunately with everything else I don't have time available at the moment. Having trouble concentrating lately so Hildon work is taking a lot longer than it should.

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

just came across this...
http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigua/

amplitube for android...
real time effects processor on phone and an irig interface ...

this kind of interface would be handy...
mind...
with what we have...
utilizing a few usb sound cards on the n8x0 is not much of an option since it won't recog. it...
of course I'm most very likely missing something...

if getting the headphone port on the n900 to in and out...
(yet to find a good female mic/ headphone to male 4post adapter that will work ...yet again perhaps I'm doing something wrong...or omitting something...) properly were to work ...
hooray...

otherwise...
it is using a chunk of silicone a nokia bluetooth earpiece mic/ for phone and funneling it through gtkgep ( possibly) and then out through headphone port...
or
out through bluetooth to speakers or a pc..
or
in... via onboard mic..(use it now..but not as good as virtually any other potentially workable method)
and then out through bluetooth to pc / speakers / headpphones..
or just out to headphones
(Thinking about it...I must be not configuring something properly...)
sigh.
could be worse s'pose....

Re: [Request] Guitar Amplification

ach....
of course...
it just dawned on me...
'member now....
a splitter isn't about to work...
at least not a normal conventional off the shelf headphone port male to mic in / audio out female
like this

none of them will..
not one...
since in someones divine wisdom ..
(perhaps in part due to the idea of incorporating video out as well....)
the mic and ground on the n900 port are REVERSED ...
meaning...
you get wicked noise coming through using anything other than an officially made-for-device-product from nokia...
unless some jury rigging hackery is somehow done by a unicorn ...no wait....
an omnicorn...
in a ball gown ...
with the help of a talking weevil
and a tap dancing elk...
wearing custom-made spats...
from what I fathom...
utilizing mic input via headphone port...aint gonna happen.
which makes me wonder...
why bother to make a headphone port that can accept a mic...
and not bother to make any mics...
not even headphones with mics...
not even any adapter TO utilize the mic..
absolutely astounding....

No...wait...
hold the tap dancing elk in spats...
there is this...
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/For-Nokia-N90...kAAOSw~OdVZc2O
at least there is this...
forgot about this...
got at least 1 in a drawer or box around here somewhere...
so there is mic in that is wired...
that will actually work...
now to grab a couple for testing and hacking apart...

This is not quite correct. Nokia followed the pinout that had been standard for donkey's years. It was damn Apple who decided that they have to be different in the name of equipment lock-in and, as usual, everyone started monkeying after them.

Possible solutions:
