Re: After the Nokia N900...
I've just got a motorola defy, it won't replace my n900 for every day use but it can replace n900 for hiking and winter sports as it's water proof, dust resistant and shock proof.
N900 only needs DECENT native email client, just that. |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
this is a really tough questino for me. I would love to get the new meego device but i am not so sure i am up for another repeat of what i experienced this past year with the nokia n900. the specs on the n9 look cool but no fm transmitter (wwhich i use a lot) and its a brand new os with no real app store. I cant depend on nokia to provide support and i dont know if the meego community will be like the maemo one (which i love) i think i will sit back and wait for apolished product to come out before i b uy a new phone. it will prob be me and the n900 for a few years with that being said. nothing else out there comes close right now.
I am not against considering andriod though |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
I've had the N900 for a year and I've been shopping around lately. My biggest N900 gripes have been network connection speeds and popular apps. ATT and Verizon are the only 3g providors in my area and I'd prefer to stick with ATT. That said there aren't a lot of good, unlocked phones that do ATT 3g and they're non-Iphone contract phones are usually crippled. However some Adroid phone such as the Droid 2 Global are looking pretty good.
With the apps, the problem is that it seems like there are always popular apps coming out that will never see a version for the N900 and who's functionality I can't just recreate. It's like if all your friend wanted to play baseball but you didn't own a glove. If you had the means to buy a glove would you complain about being a sheep or just buy the glove. Android 2.2+ is looking real powerful right now, base functions have been fleshed out and it gets popular app support. If I needed a phone right now, I'd say a Droid 2 Global. Decent camera, full keyboard, Android 2.2(hopefully 2.3 coming), Att 3g bands, etc.. However I might give the N900 another 6 months or so till the next generation of Android phones emerge. |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
Aren't you glad you're using the N900 rather than the iPhone?

Re: After the Nokia N900...
i will get new devices, but not to replace my n900....:)
|
Re: After the Nokia N900...
This really is a tough one. I would probably replace my N900 with two devices; a phone and a tablet of some sort simply because I really need longer battery life in a phone and a tablet like device for for internet/movies while i'm in the sofa/bus/train etc.
There are allot of great phones out there now but I wouldn't change from my N900. I got my one new for 270 pounds too and so i'm not happy spending 350+ on just another phone... I'm hoping the N9 will actually be half-finished when it is released and I hope its on time too. If it ticks the right boxes when it finally arrives then N9 or atom based meego device ftw. |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
No idea I just got my N900, but whatever it is, since I've experienced a physical keyboard I can't have anything else, touch screen keyboard just doesn't cut it, and if the N9 did come out with Meego, from the screen shots and all it seemed way to child like. I still prefer Maemo it seems a bit more professional

I'm here now feeling around for the N900. I've been pouring over it for the last 6 months now. I'm convinced I'm getting one very soon. I want a brand new one and I know that time is running out very soon as it'll be discontinued in the UK soon. |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
It will take an act of God and/or an incredible set of advancements for me to ever get another Nokia phone.
A Nokia tablet however, I'm game for... just not a tablet with telephony tacked on in a crap manner, again. |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
What exactly is wrong with N900 telephony?
Can you save at least 1500 Contacts? And is it easy to call them? |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
Nokia better release at least some hints to the n9 at Mobile World Congress in February after their lacklustre presence at CES...
I might want to change my vote to a Motorola after the announcement of the Atrix... |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
nothing will ever replace my n900 :) and i doubt we will see any device similar to it anytime soon
but as a new phone, probably the motorolla atrix or the lg phone that uses the same processor as the atrix. |

Re: After the Nokia N900...
long time reader (over a year) first time poster. just had to reply to this one.
i would hope there would be a successor to the N900. by far the best phone on the market. i didnt upgrade from a crusty motorola no spec flip phone for *many* years until the N900 came out. just what i wanted and needed and have not had any issues with it since i got it about 14 months ago. there is nothing you cant do with this device. it handles and looks how a 'smart phone' should, completely logical. it just needs some updated and future thinking hardware to keep in the game and i just wish maemo had a little few more tweeks here and there. it has some rough edges still. i think the problem is that nokia doesnt actually support it. i dont understand how the N900, a one of a kind platform hasnt been marketed like apple markets their one of a kind platform with its apps. seriously with the right backing this phone could have blown up completely... but its not a toy like an apple or an android is. yes its a little chunky and weighty in the pocket and a one of kind phone... but as i work for a telco, i get to use every new mobile on the market and i swear nothing has come close. the N900 keyboard is the best. hands down. the no crap on the front of the phone, just all screen real estate is refreshing. and nothing beats the ram/storage. even out of the box it STILL kicks every phone out there. 32gb ram is :) awesome. the IR port has saved me a few times at many places, and has provided some fun too. this has to be on the next maemo/meego device! best browser and handles brilliantly. best contact list and all that it can do with some extra addons. the integration is unreal and why no-one else has come to this level is questionable. proper multitasking.... i recently got to try a HTC Bravo/Desire. slim. big screen, fast, flashy... android. now ive used every android phone and they are all rubbish, an LG came up pretty good (with keyboard) but not good enough. this HTC i rooted and put on cynogenmod which makes android a lot more friendly to doing what you want. really it does help! its a bearable phone now although i feel i dont quite have total control over it. it always seems to be doing something i dont want it to.. so i gave it to my gf. in saying that though.. if i didnt have the N900 i would be pretty happy with the HTC Desire.. although no windows/multitasking apps, low internal ram, no stereo speakers, no skype video calling, no keyboard and not as 'all together' or logical as maemo. android always feels 'limiting' for some reason. on another note. are there any facts on how many N900's were sold ? |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
I don't know what would I get next.. I want an even larger screen, preferably a tablet with phone capabilities instead of a phone with tablet capabilities, you know? And I'd really want as much power to do whatever I want to as on N900.
I simply don't know of any such device on the market yet. |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
Waiting for the N900 successor to be launched.
N9??? |

bought mine imported as it was not even marketed here at that time, - and already we are discussing tossing them in the rubbish bin From what I said 5 months ago - I took my own advice Another n900 to use as a development tool (already did) and another spare n900 just in case I dropped mine in the water again (already did that) two spare batteries The reality is the Androids (bought one of those for family) do not even hold a candle to the n900 (yet) The 'n9' (or whatever it will be labelled) story has not arrived yet If Nokia pulls a stunt like locking up the operating system with DRM to satisfy vendors and carriers, hobbling the phone with various apps that either cannot be removed or cannot be worked around ' for proprietary reasons'. and (very likely to occur:) build a hardware suicide-pill intp the machine so they or the carriers can unilaterally brick your handset at whim. Then the reality is the show is over, and there will never be anything ever as cool as the n900. Already the store shelves here are empty of n900s, the official Nokia service center had to borrow a battery from me to even look at an n900 - the show is over, folks. There will be phones with f@rt-app stores, closed-garden phones, virus-me-now!now!now phones, and all the knockoffs you will ever wish to unsee, but a phone like the n900 with a community like this one will be a very long wait into the future. |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
Got tired of the N900 and purchased a Samsung Wave S8500. 3 weeks with the wave, and I am back with my N900 :) Still, the wave is definitely cool, as is Bada: Super AMOLED and super smooth, but...
My next phone will be a Nokia, preferably Symbian with a real screen and HW keyboard and OVI integration. The E7 is tempting, but not really an upgrade from the N900, not when taking the price of the E7 into consideration. MeeGo is still just a bunch of hot smoke, and it will take years before it is up to Symbian regarding functionality, if it ever will. |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
I just bought a droid 2 global to replace my lost n900. It will keep me going until meego get themselves in order hopefully. I know I'm gonna miss the FM transmitter, TV out, and the UI and customisability of maemo but hey, at least I will see what the other side have to offer...plus I won't look like such a nokia fanboy now :D

Re: After the Nokia N900...
Yah the n900 was fun while it lasted. Yah Nokia had to announce MeeGo and conveniently declare the n900 obsolete, just like the n810 conveniently didn't have enough have hardware to Maemo 5. I bet when Nokia releases the n9 right afterwards they will announce MeeGlow or Maelon which will totally be revolutionary and not be released for several months and the n9 will conveniently not be able to run it and require you buy the n1000, which will have proprietary Nokia crap on to prevent you from running Nokia's MeeGo on the n900 and n9. For me rather than deal with the crap that Nokia brought upon Internet tablets I will get something from HTC, Samsung, Archos, Acer, or one of the various Chinese manufactures who at some point will drop support but are sold at reasonable prices and have easy to hack firmwares.

Re: After the Nokia N900...
Galaxy S is very cool!
but waiting for possible N9.. =) |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
if not n900 then some other maemophone witch isnt yet made pecause im planning to use my n900 for a while since i bought it couple of weeks ago :P i think maemo is the best thing that happened to me since i got rid of my 5800 with symbian... symbian is allways crashing, freezing or randomly rebooting and now i got a phone i can actually call people without constant fear of annoying things to happen during an important call from work (or mom <3 :D)

Also I dont know why, but android just doesn't have the 'extras' in the hardward department that I like... All about screens, processors etc which is great and all, but very few good cameras (xenon flash), lots lack front facing cameras, no fm transmitters, very few have TV out, IrDa ports, or large internal storage. I also think they need to borrow n900's multitasking which is way more efficient imho and the ability to actually close applications would be nice too! In summary I guess they really are more like actual phones than my n900 swiss army tablet :) |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
i don't know what to get after the n900. anything not a n900 is just a phone
|
Re: After the Nokia N900...
I rarely use my N900 at coffee shops, etc. I mostly use it at home where my pocket size is not relevant. So I'm starting to consider the 10 inch tablet more. I carried a 10 non pocketable spiral notebook all through high school and college so I obviously didn't mind carrying something much.
A cheap primitive phone for traveling light. A tablet for real work. |

Maybe you folks need to slow down on the Dev stuffs. I'm still having fun with my N900 with new applications like Instinctive, Tunewiki and now Cute tube. I also installed the LiveCast (but still don't know how to use it yet), but I'm pretty sure, it's going to be more fun for the N900.

Maybe you can consider this phone...
http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story...4&sec=business A smart phone with dual touch screen for US$199 The phone, called the Echo, is made by Japanese manufacturer Kyocera Corp. and has screens that are each the size of an iPhone's display. Put together, they create a larger space for typing e-mails, playing games and watching videos. The resulting display is still about half the size of an iPad's. But it's still a larger surface area than those found on most phones. Nokia should have done this for the N900... Perhaps to preempt any complaints about its endurance, Sprint will include a spare battery in the box, along with a device that can recharge both the phone and the second battery at the same time. |
Re: After the Nokia N900...
This poll needs to be refreshed after MWC 2011 next week! Hoping for a new N9 with a release date sooner rather than later!
