Also, not necessarily the next firmware (in fact, almost definitely *not* the next firmware, for the reasons I outlined), but some future Maemo release. It is sensible to assume, for the moment anyway, that any Maemo release will show up on a Nokia device at some point. At this point, we've no guarantee that'll be the N800. Quote:

Re: New release named "chinook"?
Videos of Sardine demonstrating cool new features would surely help sales of existing devices through viral marketing - think how Steve Jobs demonstrated the iPhone 6 months ago and the hype that followed! :)
If these videos already exist (it's not clear from Bernards post - say or saw?) please post a link so we can publicise them to non-believers! :D |

Demos and information on Python home applets:
http://blogs.gnome.org/lucasr/2007/0...elopment-news/ http://blogs.gnome.org/lucasr/2007/0...ildon-desktop/ I've not seen any other videos of cool Sardine features, although there's been work on composite: http://syslog.movial.fi/archives/47-...ot-really.html |

For those who want to brick their device :)
There is some good explanation on how to do a mmc boot on chinook on this blog : http://tuomas.kulve.fi/blog/2007/08/23/chinook-on-mmc/ |
Re: New release named "chinook"?
I'm looking forward to the time when operating system updates don't require scrapping everything and rebuilding application by application.
On a similar note, it would be cool if we created a repository of various "loads." That is backups with the most popular applications like Meamo Mapper, Canoloa and MPlayer. If we had a few dozen different configurations in there it would give people a real jumpstart...especially the newbies. This is the advantage of us all working with the same hardware. |
Re: New release named "chinook"?
Yes that could be at least some nice gesture to all of us with fried memorycards when trying to recreate our enviroment ;-)

Re: New release named "chinook"?
See this thread for info about how to automatically reinstall programs. Of course it doesn't help it your system is already completely destroyed.
rsync is also a handy tool for backing up your home directory to another computer. It only sends the changed parts of the files, so if you combine dpkg --get-selections and backup of your home dir you should get off relatively easily. I haven't tried it myself yet though :) If you're using linux and you have your IT OS loaded on a MMC, you can mount the card with a reader and use dd to make 1:1 copy to disk and later restore it to another card. With the current history of MMC corruptions having decent backups is crucial :) |
Re: New release named "chinook"?
Notification has been served...
http://maemo.org/news/announcements/...190039774.html Ok now we have a blurry screenshot kind of showing nothing! What clues does this Rorschach inkblot test hold for the future of maemo? Ok at a minimum GTK+ 2.10 and Glibc 2.5... |

for example: -a SMS script that uses the Betamax Voip services (Voipbuster, SMS discount etc. etc.) to send messages to people in my contact list on my nokia S60 phone. -a TV streaming script over wifi that can starts my PC at home (wake up on LAN), and use VLC to stream all of my TV channels to MPlayer on my N800. (I hope to make an applet like the radio applet, but one that starts a TV stream) I know there are some applications in development that can do (somewhat) the same things: a phonelink program, and a myth Tv client, but it is much more fun to script them yourself using python :-) Also your own python script may be easier to use than those applications in development, because you only put in those features that you really want. (very very simple scripts). using python you can access VERY powerful and useful features of your hardware very easily. The biggest problem (i believe) for newbies is the GUI. By default you can use only PyGTK (with hildon specific extentions) for your graphic user interface. GTK isn't very easy in my opinion (compared to simple python scripts ). I mostly use Eagle as my GUI toolkit (a wrapper on top of PyGTK, to access basic stuff very easily), because I hate it when i need to spent more time on the GUI than on the scripts themselves. (also it shouldn't be necessary if you just want some buttons, and lists etc.) |

Re: New release named "chinook"?
Anyone noticed new features of Chinook beta ?
HAL added, with libhal as wrapper. Supported devices: # keyboard (open/closed, exists/doesn’t exist) # ambient light sensor Well, that tells us something :-) |
Re: New release named "chinook"?
Also:
Connectivity - Added BlueZ audio support :-) |
Re: New release named "chinook"?
No accelerometer - so I guess screen rotation is still not on the menu!
