Re: [Announce] MIR Translator - Translate text captured by the Nokia N900 mobile camera
Been using this with a few things and it's REALLY nice. I would love to see a version that impliments the server locally on the N900, even if it's slower. Being able to do this off-line would be great. Even if there are two packages (a client side and server side) that would be fine. You could have the server side change the settings for the client to point to it vs your server.
Donated... please keep up the good work! |

I'm extremely embarassed to say: I was expecting to see more, and didn't even try the shutter button. Now that I've been successful in using the translator, I can't get it to crash. Not that I'm bothered by this "issue" :). Again, could be a newbie issue: How can I switch to another task from mir-translator without closing the application? Is there way to zoom the image to make the area selection more accurate for one to avoid including unwanted regions? Is there a way to manually input misrecognized character instead of trying to get the OCR right for that character |

Re: [Announce] MIR Translator - Translate text captured by the Nokia N900 mobile camera
This app is completely nonfunctional on my N900. I've tried it many times, and it has never produced even a poor translation of the input text. There's no error message - just the recognized characters corresponding to the input string, and an empty translation box. Does anyone know what might be wrong? Does it not work in North America (on T-Mobile)? There must be something wrong with my setup; is an error log saved anywhere in the event that translation fails completely?

Re: [Announce] MIR Translator - Translate text captured by the Nokia N900 mobile camera
Fix the internet connection issue. Add the ability to minimize the screen. Ability to copy the text that was translated...then it's PERFECT!

One other thought: What is the "server" running on now? I assume a PC running Linux or Windows? Would it be possible in the short term to package/zip/tar/vmware up the files and setup info needed to set up another server for this, say on a home PC? That could be useful too, both to lower load on your server, to serve as a backup, etc. |

Re: [Announce] MIR Translator - Translate text captured by the Nokia N900 mobile camera
It is a really interesting approach to text recognition & translation. Specially as the client is open source, so people can learn from it :)
Do you have any paper describing how the recognition happens, and the client/server architecture? Also, any plans to release source code for the server part? one idea might be to offload the server side by allowing to select from various servers (there might be people interested on hosting a server, for instance). Thanks! |
Re: [Announce] MIR Translator - Translate text captured by the Nokia N900 mobile camera
Can you please consider adding a Business Card Reader feature to this app? Please?

Very nice. Kudos!
I'm also interested in the server-side component. Biz card recognition with on-device address book integration would be killer. |
Re: [Announce] MIR Translator - Translate text captured by the Nokia N900 mobile camera
This looks great, but crashes when i ask it to recognise the text (after selecting the area). The camera still seems to work. I have CSSU and the default kernel.
Thanks for a great program! -Edit I thought i'd be smart and start the program in xterm so i could get an error log or something, but all it says is "Segmentation fault" Though earlier it says repeatedly " Expected image data not returned from V4L2. Likely caused by exess page faults (thrashing)" and "WARNING: frame limit hit (128), silently dropping 1 frames. You're not draining the frame queue quickly enough. Use longer frame times or drain the frame queue until empty every time you call getFrame()" After that (presumably when i'm taking the photo) i get lines about the shutter and focus being used, and a camera image being captured. I can move the highlighting box over the writing i want to translate, then when i push "send" i get the segfault. Not sure if that'll help haha! |

Re: [Announce] MIR Translator - Translate text captured by the Nokia N900 mobile camera
Hi everyone,
just installed the app and it looks great but unfortunately it keeps crashing every time just after I hit the button Send (that is after I have selected the text I would like to have translated). The camera seems to work. I have CSSU and the default kernel installed. Any ideas?? Best regards, Miro |

Smaller chunks of text works for me but crashes if I try a little bigger image with more text.
When crashed X-terminal shows me this error message: Code:
ASSERT failure in QList<T>::operator[]: "index out of range", file ../../../../MADDE/0.6.72/sysroots/fremantle-arm-sysroot-10.2010.19-1-slim/usr/include/QtCore/qlist.h, line 447 |
Re: [Announce] MIR Translator - Translate text captured by the Nokia N900 mobile camera
Hi AWasisto,
thanks for answering my question. I did as you told me to and I get the same message in Xterminal as Mara above. So I guess we have the same problem. Thanks again, Best regards Miro |

Re: [Announce] MIR Translator - Translate text captured by the Nokia N900 mobile camera
Hi all,
I have been quite busy with my day job for some time now and have virtually no time to maintain this project. I have had to shut down the EC2 server that the service was running on. The project source code is completely open, for those interested in viewing it / changing it / hosting it on their own... (sorry its a bit shoddy in documentation, maybe I'll get around to it sometime). Hosted at http://code.google.com/p/cs262aproject/ Thanks. |
Re: [Announce] MIR Translator - Translate text captured by the Nokia N900 mobile camera
Umm good luck but tell you what it never worked perfectly on my device .Hope some one takes it up and makes it perfect for our N900.
