I too would love to test this brilliant App on the N9 which I hope to have mid August if Nokia Sweden deem me to be in the top 30 of their Test Pilot Competition.

Felix, I could sure do with your recommendation. ;)♠

I was finally able to promote ClipMan to the normal extras repository. Thanks for all voters! :)

Sadly the version is now several weeks old. So I have instantly promoted the new version from extra-devel to extra-testing. I hope we need not again that long for a promotion.

So please vote!

A question which does not really belong here, but OTOH is related: why does use talk.maemo.org different accounts than packages and / or the wiki? It would be way easier using a single-signon. Is it because of ubb vs/ wiki accounts? Probably the packages subsite uses additionally a third framework...

As far as I know it is because the forum was taken from a different page. internettablettalk.com integrated their already existing forum into the also existing page maemo.org and as far as I know they were unable to merge the accounts. It feels very messy, you're right. :(

That's correct afaik. The forum existed as an independent site (and still is - if I remember correctly they are still technically on separate servers or something like that) - Nokia wanted to make a community thing for Maemo devices, and since by then internet tablet talk was very Nokia Nxx0-centric, they co-opted this one.

Granted, this is my understanding as an outsider who only came in after the talk.maemo.org transformation.

Re: [Announce] ClipMan - Clipboard Manager

Love this app, thank you!

Something that would be very useful for me would be if Clipman could (optionally) monitor any notifications dialogues (the multi-line orange boxes which have to be dismissed).

e.g.
Code:

dbus-send --type=method_call --dest=org.freedesktop.Notifications /org/freedesktop/Notifications org.freedesktop.Notifications.SystemNoteDialog string:"QUESTION?" uint32:0 string:"OK"

Thanks for your feedback. :)

Hmm... personally I would say I don't need this personally... but there could be some useful cases, especially because of the stored time when the notification happened.

Sadly I have currently not that much time but I will try to integrate it (optional) into the harmattan build (I have there a settings menu) and backport it to the N900. I guess I have to fork it and create a second version for the N900... I have the impression that QML slows the app startup down and I prefer fast applications at my N900... ;)

And thanks for the code. I have not that much expirience with d-bus. But I guess I have to learn it anyway. So stay tuned! :D

Do you know, will there be a similar notification system at the N9 like at our N900?

Re: [Announce] ClipMan - Clipboard Manager

So, a long time since the last update... at least it feels like ages. But I'm happy to announce that I was finally able to make some progress at this project.

Here you have the version for the Nokia N9, Yay! :D

https://sites.google.com/site/helexm...trait_List.pnghttps://sites.google.com/site/helexm...scape_List.png

It looks quiet different compared to the MeeGo Tablet user interface and you're right, I had to do the whole UI from scratch. :(

Currently is the text below the List not editable. It was in my opinion simply not usable to select a text or copy it with the virtual keyboard below.
I have developed in the meantime a solution and I will try to prepare the first update before the weekend. (have currently craftsman at home, so I'm a little bit busy)
The code for the update works so far. I have to fix 2 small bugs and if I upload it at the weekend and if everything is fine it should be at ovi next Wednesday. :)

But no good news without bad news: :(
As some of you already know I have currently not that much time for my Hobby and to make it even worse I will need perhaps soon again a small side job. So fewer and fewer time to develop for maemo and MeeGo. :(
Because of this I thought I could perhaps try to combine my small Hobby and my private issues and try to sell what I have developed. I know, very unpopular and I like open and free software a lot more than Software I have to pay for. I'm really sorry for this solution but I want to try if this could work for me.

I have created 2 versions of ClipMan for the Nokia N9: So you get already something, even without paying for it.

I currently have no clue what will happen now with MeeGo and the community repository but I have still planned to upload the free version to the OBS system. So if the 0,99€ bucks (or the correlate value in your country) is to much for you to support me and the free version is not enought, you will be able to compile it yourself later this year including the storage support, but please understand, just not jet.

If you have donated for ClipMan and don't wan't to pay additional 0,99€ please sent me a PM. I will transfer you 1€ via Paypal to get ClipMan for free.

I hope this is fair enough for everyone. :)

The versions for the N900 and MeeGo Tablet (at the AppUp store) are still free. :)

Please try to understand me, donations are very cool and a great and motivating feedback but it is not enought compared to what I could make with a side job at a local gas station. I like developing Software a lot more so hopefully I would this way be able to continue with my small projects and don't need a second job.

Re: [Announce] ClipMan - Clipboard Manager

I got my copy of ClipMan from the store today. :)

I think this will be a very useful application for the N9, due to lack of hardware keyboard. It would be even more useful if Nokia will give us copy and paste in xterm. ;)

I do however have a couple of bugs to report. I am guessing that the lock/unlock toolbutton should be checked when the highlighted item is unlocked. However, it is possible to make it become checked when the item is locked and unchecked when locked. You can see this in the screenshots above. The other problem is that it is possible to add an item by copy part of an existing item to the clipboard (see third screenshot), but the added item cannot be deleted from the database. It reappears when I restart the application. I actually like the ability to create a new item from an existing one. In fact, I think it would be nice to allow full editing of an existing item by making the textarea writable instead of read-only. You could have a '+' button that appears when the item is edited, which would add the edited item to the list when clicked. :) This would make it easy to have lots of xterm commands on tap, ready for when Nokia give us that damn copy and paste in xterm. ;)

Oh yes. This is soooo true. I hope they are able to find a good way to integrate it. A way to mark text and copy it are missing at so many places including the built in webbrowser. :(

Hmm... I'm not sure if I got you right. The button shows the state the currently selected item has. The default value is unlocked thus unchecked.

Hm, I'm not sure if I get you right. In your opinion the button should have the value the item will get as soon as you press the button? Or is the icon fine but the check state should change?

Different philosophy but someway logical. I will test how this feels for me but I know only the current behavior from my Desktop PC. :)

:D
Mh, yes. This is a special feature, marxian, not a bug. ;)

I have already thought about this issue and if I should try to "fix it". What you see is my current compromise.

ClipMan detects at the startup if there is currently unstored content in the clipboard. If you delete the newest item (the one you have mostly still in the clipboard), close ClipMan and restart it the application puts the current content again to the database (because it's currently missing there)

A possible fix would be to empty the clipboard if a item with the same content is deleted. But what if a user wan't only to delete the entry in ClipMan, switch to his Emails and past the last content he had copied himself to the clipboard several minutes ago.

In this case a user could have a bad experience because of a unexpected behavior of ClipMan. :)

So I thought the current implementation would be the best solution.

What do you think after this clarification?

I could add a query if a user want's to empty also the clipboard if he deletes the first item.
Could this work for you? :)

Yes, I love it too and this will be part of the next update. But the textarea will still be read-only. I placed a button at the upper right corner to edit the text. If you press the button a new page with editable textarea and virtual keyboard will appear.
At ClipMan it is because of the read-only textarea a little bit more accurate to mark a text compared to textareas with enabled virtual keyboard. (it has problems to detect if I want to place the coursor or if I want to mark a text)

I guess the qml textarea is anyway still a construcion zone. I wanted to add a own virtual keyboard with coursor buttons to the textarea. But the property platformCustomSoftwareInputPanel is currently only aviable at single line text fields, not at multiline textareas.

Mmh, good Idea. A button to add the whole edited text. At the solution for the current update I have to mark the text and copy it if I wan't to reuse it later. I guess I have to change this. Thanks for your proposal!
But perhaps you have to wait for the after next update. I wan't to release the editable textarea as soon as possible. :) I have only 2 issues I wan't to fix before.

By the way, do you know if it is possible to show the virtual keyboard and the menu at the same time?

The cursor Buttons are a big step forward. Sadly they are currently using swipe gestues to change the Buttons at the area where we need to mark text for our clipboard.
I guess xterm is not open source, otherwise it would be fixed since ages. :(

So, I hope my answer was not to long. The first update will arrive soon. Thanks for your feedback. :)

Thanks for reporting.

Re: [Announce] ClipMan - Clipboard Manager

Regarding the lock/unlock toolbutton. The issue is that the checkstate is inconsistent. Sometimes it is checked when unlocked, other times it is checked when locked. It depends upon the combination of actions that you take. I think it is actually unnecessary for the toolbutton to be checkable. What matters is that the user can see whether the item is locked/unlocked, and that is the case due to the change in the icon and the enabling/disabling of the delete button. :)

I see what you mean about adding the existing clipboard item on startup. I didn't consider that. It's actually a really good idea, so I think you should leave it as it is. :)

It is possible to display a menu and the virtual keyboard at the same time. I have implemented this in my own applications. The menu shifts up when the virtual keyboard is displayed, like this:

Re: [Announce] ClipMan - Clipboard Manager

So, I pushed now a first update with the lock button bugfix and a first edit mode to the OVI QA. The Update should appear next week. I don't know how long the Nokia team needs for the quality testing for a update. :)

The textarea is still readonly but I placed a edit button in the upper right corner of the field:
http://sites.google.com/site/helexme..._List_Copy.png

If you press it the list disappears and you get a big textarea with enought space to edit the text:
http://sites.google.com/site/helexme...trait_Edit.png

As you can see the back button disappears as soon as the keyboard is shown:

It would be better to use if the ToolBar would persist but I haven't found a solution yet. I will investigate more about this topic for the next update. I hope this is possible without dirty tricks. ;)

Re: [Announce] ClipMan - Clipboard Manager

I'm happy to announce: A new Version of ClipMan for the Nokia N9! :D

v0.1.2
  • added a command to clean up the database and compress the file

You are now able to delete all items in the clipboard list at once except the ones you have proteced using the small lock. :) This way you are able to keep the list neat and fast.

But this time it is only a update for the paid version because this update makes no sense for ClipManLite - there is no database to store the Clips forever and hence no need for a cleanup. ;)

You are able to select this command in the Menu in the lower right corner. ENJOY! :)

Re: [Announce] ClipMan - Clipboard Manager

Hi helex!

Great work. It simply works and does the job as it should on my shiny new N9. :)

I have only 2 suggestions for small improvements:
  • The blue Button to edit a text is very small - why not place it in the toolbar?
  • I prefer the swipe keyboard and I'm unable to close it in the edit menu. So I always have to swipe it away, get the default keyboard and then close this keyboard to reach the back button. In my opinion the toolbar should persist the whole time.

Apart from that I can't see any potential to improve it. Simply a small and great working application. Thanks! :)

Hmm... the simple solutions are sometimes really the best. I created it this way because the MeeGo tablet and N900 version doesn't need this button. But hence I already created a totally different UI I will look into it. Perhaps I will add simply a additional button... will see if this is easily doable.

Great timing! I just uploaded last weekend a fix for this issue to the ovi store. It should arrive as soon as the Nokia QA gives a go. :)

I will add later a teaser screenshot to this thread! I'm currently short in time (have a appointment in several minutes). You will get soon 2 buttons at the top of the text box. One to close the window and one to reuse the whole text in a new Clip. Enjoy and stay tuned! :)

New update:

I'm not sure what benefit I have to be a Qt Ambassador but at least Nokia published a small page about ClipMan on their webseite: Link
...and as far as I know I could get a nice T-Shirt...

So since there are no bug reports, no feature requests and Nokia rated ClipMan as good enought for their Ambassador showcase page I guess I should be fine to say my Project ClipMan is finished.
I hope everyone own soon a DreamBox. My next app is in the pipeline. ;)

Re: [Announce] ClipMan - Clipboard Manager

ClipMan is a very clever little tool. Well done on getting the thumbs up from Nokia.

The bugs I'd raise are't really bugs at all but a feature requests. The programme works well but as with all software, it could be extened/refactored.
- For me, ClipMan would be more useful if it were to run as a deamon (automatically starting at boot). Then, the only reason the user would have to access the full interface would be to clear the cache or edit an item. Otherwise, it would work just like a copy-paste with persistence.
- When running in the background, items further down the list (i.e. not last copied item) could be pasted from a drop-down menu accessed from the system toolbar (whatever it's proper name is!).

Those ideas aside, nice work helex! 14 months. You put most of us to shame with the speed you picked up C++. A really dedicated effort. Amazing!

Ah, yes... this is still missing. I have this nightmare totally forgotten! :D

This is the current state:

I have done a lot of testing, I guess it was in July, before or short after I went to Munich for a Intel event. I tried it based on a multiplatform example from the Qt website. It was so complicated with all this windows stuff but I thought I would need it because of my purpose to port ClipMan across all platforms (N900, Harmattan, MeeGo, Linux Desktop and Windows) - I failed miserably - on all platforms. I had no chance to debug my code, have still not understood where it failed and was unable to check if my daemon is even trying to start up or not.

At this point I have to admit, I began with my Linux expirience with my N900 and have at home still a Desktop with Windows XP. So it was for me perhaps a lot of unknown stuff at a single blow. ;)

At this point some free Hardware from Intel and MeeGo dropped in and I learned all this qml stuff to get ClipMan ported to MeeGo Tablet (to get a ned SSD Harddisk from Intel) and later the N9... and now the year is over. :)

Well, I axed in the meantime my plans for a Desktop version and Intel axed the requirement for a MeeGo tablet version. I guess it should be a lot more easier to do it only for maemo 5 and maemo 6 (MeeGo-Harmattan).

Hm, and from my current point of view I would also try to avoid the opaque packaging system of the Qt creator. It's a pain for me. But I have to learn first how to do it otherwise.

I had also the problem that I tried at the same time to figure out how to deaktivate a daemon from a different application and how to enable it without the need to be root. Simply to give the users a choice... I guess I have in the meantime a simple solution for this troblem. :)

I would now try to create a completely seperated package for this. A new application, containing only the daemon. This way everyone would get a choice if they would like to keep the daemon running in the background or not. Those who don't like it should only install ClipMan, those who would like a additional daemon are able to install the daemon in addition.

I guess ClipMan should work with this daemon together without changes. It would simply check a second time, after the daemon, if the new content in the clipboard is already stored in the database or not. Duplicate work but it shouldn't slow down the whole process noticeable.

Hmm... I learned a lot of stuff during the past months, so perhaps a second try is this time a little bit more promising.

I want to spent during the next 2 weeks some time with my family, my girlfriend and I would like to release soon my new DreamRemote (it is a complete rewrite because I done my first version using the slow python and I don't like how it works currently). I'm working at the moment hard on the user interface, the database backend for the settings and the communication part. I would like to finish this before I frustrate myself with this daemon stuff. :) So perhaps early 2012... stay tuned! :)

Okay, possible. At least at the N900. But look how many space each plugin and menu entry there has. I would say there is at maximum space to access the last 4 items, not more. Look at my other project: Conky Layout Switcher. But then we would have there only 4 Buttons, no space for a indication what is at this place in the clipboard. At the moment I would say it is faster and easier to simply start ClipMan and select the item there. :)

You can put there a button to get to ClipMan using the tool "Quick Launch" and using "ShortCutD" you are able to switch fast beween ClipMan and your current application.
I would say there is currently rather a bigger demand for a daemon instead of a drop-down menu. Or have I misunderstood how it should work? :)

Thanks a lot. I have to admit, the lines at this Qt ambassador page is very compact but I thought there is no need to place there my biography. ;)
I developed before several years Software using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and I learned C at school. So I had only to refresh my dusted C knowledge and learn all the Object oriented C++ stuff. Okay, this part was hard. Qt was with this fundamentals in contrast easy so learn but the qml and Qt Quick stuff was and is finally a real challenge for me.
And I have to bear in mind, I had nearly no Linux knowledge before except to copy my timer table from my Linux based satellite receiver to my Windows desktop. ;)

Re: [Announce] ClipMan - Clipboard Manager

I figured out a problem with my ClipMan application at the ovi store. (the version for the N9 / N950) :(

If you have installed ClipManLite and want to update to the paid version you will be unable to buy it at the Nokia ovi store. I have figured out the problem together with the support team but a fix will need some days.

So IF you would like to get all the great possibilities the full version of ClipMan provides to you please deinstall ClipManLite and after this you will be able to purchase ClipMan. :)

Sorry for any kind of trouble I would have produced. A fix is on the way. It will also fix a lot of Layout issues for the upcoming PR1.2 for MeeGo Harmattan. :)

Re: [Announce] ClipMan - Clipboard Manager

Finally: The latest update for the N9 should have arrived at the ovi store! :)

New in this version:
  • I fixed a lot layout related bugs for the upcoming release of PR1.2 - please ensure to update

I changed also the version numbering:
  • ClipMan has now the version numbers 1.x.x and ClipManLite 0.x.x - if the number behind the first digit is the same it is the same release.

Everyone should now be able to upgrade their free ClipManLite installation to the full version of ClipMan with database backend to save the clips as long as you want.

Please report if someone has still proplems with upgrading to the unlimited version. :)

Thanks! :D

I was very, very proud and impressed the moment I saw the article! It will perhaps find at some point it's way into my CV or I will print the page and mount it into a small frame. Not sure about it yet. :)

Sorry for my late reply. I'm currently very busy at work and I'm only at the weekend at home. :(

There used to be a free lite version and a paid full version:

But both were paid versions at the end of life for the Nokia Store.
