And if they refuse, they will no doubt have their lawyers draft a nice C&D letter, ready to dispatch as soon as BeBeCe hits the repos. I would rather just keep a low profile.

I was planning to have an offline favourites database, but I am ready to consider alternatives.

*sigh*. What the hell is it with them? Is it just down to NIH-itis?

Thanks for the very rapid response.

Fair point, just wondered. You're right: some people, like beauro-suits, don't work with reason!

The plan is to initially provide playback/download of pre-recorded shows, and take it from there. PVR features will be added later.
Excellent. I think this is what we're all hoping for. The content available through iplayer is great but it's annoying the way a lot of platforms, including Maemo, are prevented from making the most of it.

The application is called BeBeCe and I do not have any plans to extend it beyond BBC content.

:)
The question was about whether it might be physically possible and if you had any thoughts on how. It was not a request.

Am I missing something? What will people be screaming about?

Anyway, thanks marxian. You're our video hero!

Re: [WIP] BeBeCe - BBC iPlayer Application

@demolition, I was thinking about the userbase if and when the Beeb make yet another change to their client logic.

Especially if the app was also compiled for other phones out there...

But marxian, thanks for piling into this, cos it'll actually make watching longer items possible on the ol' 900 without killing the battery...

Oh I see. Hopefully the beeb's streams will stay the same for a while. Have a look at the streams available by selecting one of the programmes in this list. I think (but not totally sure) they're client-independent.

Slightly offtopic: Has anyone had any problems playing the mp4 files downloaded with get_iplayer? I assume they're h264? I keep getting the Unable to play media, bad codec message. Thought I had all available codecs installed? And the media player can see + get length of these files... very strange.

I've used giplayer before on my Ubuntu box. It's just a Python wrapper for get_iplayer ; might be worth seeing if it can be co-erced into running on Maemo?

Yeah - but the acid test will of course be... can you play out Dr Who through it, direct from the iPlayer server infrastructure...

Re: [WIP] BeBeCe - BBC iPlayer Application

Just a quick update. My work on BeBeCe was put on hold for a few days while I was working on the new media player for cuteTube. The time is not lost, as the same code (or most of it) will also be used for BeBeCe media playback. I'll be making more progress on BeBeCe over the weekend. :)

My get_iplayer downloads play out of sync and jerky, so i have to convert them using a pc.

This applies to the flv files get_iplayer downloads first, and the mp4 files that get_iplayer creates from converting the flv file.

But, when i transfer the mp4 file to the other half's Nokia N8, they play fine.

I got a bit of an update from marxian on the cute tube thread

He's thanked me for the info so hopefully he's still looking into it.

I realise there have been problems with this and that the shiny new Harmattan device has taken up time fot CuteTube, but is there any news on this? is there any hope it might see light of day or are the problems terminal?

Re: [WIP] BeBeCe - BBC iPlayer Application

The new season of Doctor Who is here, which is as good a reason as any to see if there is any life in BeBeCe or if Auntie's latest iObfuscations have made it all to difficult.

Re: [WIP] BeBeCe - BBC iPlayer Application

I haven't looked into this for a while, as I've been busy with my other projects, but I presume there is still no way to obtain a stream that is playable on the N900. If/when this changes, I will be happy to continue working on this.

Re: [WIP] BeBeCe - BBC iPlayer Application

There may be a way. Turns out that a LOT of people have been shouting for more open access to the Beeb - if a case can be put under this - the Trust have rolled out a proposed revised syndication policy...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/news/p...dication.shtml

There are calls for an API to be developed and released, so playback clients can be designed separate to the Beeb - leaving it up to them to handle encoding, control and playout.

We have till the 21st Dec 2011 to make a case for one... this could then extend down the line and all that...

Thoughts?
