Or more exactly TMO is a dead OpenSource forum!

just thought that merging it with the N9 vs. N950 thread would allow to compare directly which of those features would also be available to common mortals, but maybe that's not the purpose, is it?

erendorn 2011-07-21 19:41

Re: Unexpected cool features on n950

All the cool features given in this thread will apply to the N9, so this is not really a "N9 vs N950" thing. Of course the same thread about the N9 would be nice, but there are not so many non nokians with N9 around.

never bothered even checking out the N9 vs N950 as i don't consider the N9 a MID (thus won't get one) and i don't have a N950, so, what's the point.
come to think of it, the only reason i started posting here was because of vi_'s posts...

The n950 is beyond cool. After I solved an initial call UI problem, I made it my primary phone. That was unexpected. Via bluetooth, transferring n900 contacts and calendar took all of two minutes. If someone doesn't beat me to it, maybe later I'll write a transfer script for the phone and messaging logs. I use static WiFi IP addresses in my house, so email took a little longer while I figured out that I also had to manually configure the WiFi DNS. The usual stuff.

Anyway, it rocks. Now, back to my code...

Oh, and someone was wondering if this was a Jesus phone? Take a closer look:

Even the oh-so-supported iphone get 1 major update after one year, and part of a second one after two.

Cannot tell for you, but most people don't buy devices for what they will do in 2 years time (in that case it's just much cheaper to buy 2 years old devices). If the N9 lacks "must have" features for you at 3 months after launch, DONT BUY IT. If it doesn't, buy it if you like it AS IT IS.

You miss the point. What you are talking about are UPDATES. What we are talking about is BUGFIXES for Maemo5 beta 3 (the most obvious example is "OVI Maps for Maemo").

Just check the support and update history of previous maemo devices (N7xx N8xx) then compare it to N900. Or just check the support of any general NOKIA device.

Once you did it, dare to say that again! We, NOKIA users doesn't expected such a crap support and ABANDON for a *coughcough*high-end*coughcough* device like this!

I truly hope that all the folks with the N950 actually do something with it.

Otherwise, I can enumerate 200+ folks that had an opportunity to do something cool with hardware that we mere mortals don't have access to.

Take the hint. Don't let this be another N900 situation where the devs talked a good game, but didn't really produce much. Just saying...

When I'm meeting with, negotiating against or interviewing a person.. Excessive frequency of and improperly timed smiles usually sends a red flag that the person is uneasy of something. Whether they're unsure of what they're saying, making false promises or hiding something.. Or just uneasy in social situation.

But it's never a good sign.

face to face?

the issue with internet conversations is that you can not see other peoples reactions thus making the whole conversation million times harder. that is why you have some cute smileys in the internets.

if you are refering to the portrait feature, honestly... tried it and don't see the point. the limitation of the N900 as a mobile phone comes from the lack of physical keys to dial (SMS, message, aso.) blindly.
fail to see how portrait vs. landscape changes that, alas :(

personally, i'd rather try... the combination top right ;)

u can go know potrait keyboard instantly. instead of waiting it to rotate, which also gets tiresome.
u can get to hold ur phone its potrait which is in my opinion more practical than holding lanscape then changing to make a call.

does the changing orientation still work if you always keep it in landscape mode?

for a phone, i guess portrait is (still) the expected orientation.
PCs seem to have gone landscape all the way, no?
makes the keyboard use, whether physical or virtual easier, i guess.

depends on how one uses the N900, maybe?

just rambling, anyway.
tried it, un-installed it.
i saw from the list of 50+ (little) known features of the N900 that w/ CSSU portrait can be much more pervasive on the N900 too.

guess the improvements made by NOKIA via Harmatan make the whole difference between usability and functionality (for the N950).

i will.

as for cool tricks. keyboard shortcuts are still around.

the fw isnt final, nor will it ever be. but its a solid device so far. the sdk gets updated frequently, and the connectivity tools are top notch. well thought out. save for the assumed commercial "deprecation" of the device. its going to serve to community well by being the zenith for the meego platform for now.

I'd rather not at this point, I'd want to be 110% sure that my ideas can be put into practice.

I can tell you that most of you probably don't even have use for the app. I just wondered in April that how can a sport with a lot of wealthy players around the world have less tools (aka pen and paper) to analyze the performance than someone who just goes jogging....

It's not.

It is a dead, end of line abortion. An inkling of what the team behind the N900 were trying to create before they were buttfvcked and force to design the equally pointless N9.

Don't you get it? The N9 HAS NO FUTURE. The N950 HAS NO FUTURE. There will be no firmware updates and almost certainly no 'appz'. Everything that sucks about the N900 (see lack of support) this thing will embody. N9^N900 suck.

And now the creme de la crap, the steamer on the cake, the most talented of the maemo developers have been given a 'loan' of one so they can port programs that no one can use to a platform that apparently only 250 of exist.

It is not like this thing even runs meego with a tiny possibility of a future, it runs 'harmattan'. An absolute 1 way, council estate cul de sac of an OS. Further more it is not even the same hardware as this N9 so fvck knows what good it will be for 'porting appz'.

While I accepted the follow device would be the final nail in the coffin for the N900, I never guessed the final nail would have the functional equivalent of a dildo in an orphanage.

Thank you.

Everyone loves the things that they can't have. Period.
