and the solution...

Code:

chmod 755 /usr/bin/dpkg

In my opinion, it is pretty weird that permissions need to be changed on dpkg. If that is a problem, there are probably other hidden problems we don't know about. When I start thinking like that, I start thinking about reflashing.

understand this, pls
i'm suggesting commands to run for two reasons
1. to gather information about what the problem exactly is
2. to solve the problem

for the time being we are in 1. and when i post a command, i need to see the actual output from the command.
no output ≃ no help
this is not bad will, it is simply the need to see what's going on.

EDIT: as geneven pointed out, having to change the rights on dpkg is pretty bad.
there is a way to reinstall dpkg even though it does not fix the underlying problem of corrupt installation of other packages.
the easiest solution out would indeed be to re-flash your N900 which would mean that you would also have to reinstall all your programs. data saved in /home/user/MyDocs does not get overwritten (if done properly) so you data should be safe

@ XLs
be aware that following command may make your N900 totally unusable.
if it does so, you will have no other option left but to re-flash it.

do you understand and accept the risk?

  • that apt-get / dpkg or (Hildon) Application Manager stop working altogether.
  • that for whatever reason your N900 does not start anymore

in either case it is probably a good moment to make a BACKUP of your data
  • tap on the top left corner of the N900 main screen until you get to the Application menu (screen with many icons)
  • tap on Backup
  • tap on New backup
  • type in a name & tap on Proceed
  • unselect Application list as obviously your application configuration is corrupt.
  • tap on Select

no, Skype wouldn't be more easier.
it is preferable that you work on your N900 and / or PC while following the instructions i post here
furthermore, i don't always know right away what to do or how to do it as i'm myself not running Windows, i had to find out what the command was to get the architecture.
furthermore, this thread will remain online and thus be available for other N900 owners who run into a similar problem.
if we know go on Skype, they'd be left without solution.

BACKUP your data

  • tap on Backup
  • tap on New backup
  • type in a name & tap on Proceed
  • unselect Application list as obviously your application configuration is corrupt.

Re: Installing & uninstalling application on Nokia n900

misterc you are impressively patient :)

XLs, please note that this is not an official help forum or anything, people here will help you on their free time as other users. Be patient, and make absolute effort to follow the recommended commands accurately.

Skype is not advised here because:
- the community is not a chat support service
- some people may have the same issues as yours, and will want to see the solution without asking again. As such, it is best if it is available on the forum.

The uninstall script is not finding the backup style sheet of SMS Conversations.

Please try
Code:

ls /usr/share/rtcom-messaging-ui/html/
If the .bkp isn't there, you may need to put one in there.
I have put attached my css file, I think it should be the original one. If not, ask someone that did not install a theme to copy it for you.
Note: replace the .txt extension by the .bkp extension (this is the /usr/share/rtcom-messaging-ui/html/MessagingWidgetsSMSConversation.css file of my device).

it shouldn't.
repeat the process (make shure to follow misterc advice, and try to UNDERSTAND what you do).
If it still close unexpectedly after some command, add
Code:

> C:\commandoutput.txt
at the end of the command that closes the cmd.
Then, post the content of commandoutput.txt

btw misterc: nice of you being calm with that Indian guy. I wouldn't help, because it will take AGES while repeating the same and same over again - like while calling to certain call centers...
