Lol dammit! There goes my only serious alternative to the Nokia N9. :(

Both WP7 and android now have heavyweight hardware vendors backing them, this makes it a dangerous business for Samsung et-al to rely on them as a third parties.

With HP ditching their low-margin consumer hardware business WebOS for printers doesn't make much sense, so perhaps Samsung would like to buy WebOS?

I was serious thinking buying a palm pre or a touchpad go as a posible alternative to N9...now the N9 will be the only and last true linux device :(

What's stopping you from picking up a Pre device? If anything the news will no doubt mean that you could pick one up much cheaper now and ride the Community support waggon :)

...wait, that sounds a little too familiar ;p

I really don't understand why HP didn't join the Meego effort a year ago, both they and Nokia would have won out of that. Regardless of whether they were actually being built from Meego, or were just compliant enough (surely that wouldn't have been too hard, WebOS is close enough in some terms to Meego) to mean that developers could confidently develop for Meego and target WebOS, Harmattan and vanilla Meego, it would at least have given a multi-vendor ecosystem a chance.

Once they saw there was a viable ecosystem, reducing the costs and accelerating time to market by merging into vanilla Meego would have made sense.

...and as I was told by my wife "Does this mean Project Runway needs to get new tablets for their designers?"

I laughed and begged for the channel to go back to BBCA/Top Gear.

I wonder though if HP has any other sort of sponsorship based on their now defunked tablets.

Oh hell no!

This year's personal "hate" words:
1) ecosystem
2) deliver
3) ...

USD$99 for a 16GB TouchPad, $149 for a 32.

Who gives a **** about ecosystems with a price like that.

Did you actually see them for sale at that price, or are you just speculating/daydreaming?

Well, I guess "keflex" might refer to a whacky purchasing option requiring an .edu emai using "HP Academic Purchase" program.

More info on slickdeals:

I assume other retailers will follow suit and fire-sell the touch pad.

How much is it worth? What can you do with it? I guess it will be difficult to load Android or Meego?

What about a touchpad as a $100 networked foto display?

With the HPA discounts and SAVE15HP coupon, you can get the TouchPad for $84.99.

Hmm, BestBuy Canada had it at 99, but it sold out apparently. Let's see if in the US we'll get the same deal. For that money I'd buy 2.

I saw one on show in Staples (England) and had a quick go. OMG it was so laggy it was hardly useable, and it was only running the preloaded demo software. Not good at all. If it gets cheap enough still might buy one as a photo display tool for my photography business...

Could we install cordia on the HP touchpad?

Yeah, this is a shame as I was looking at a WebOS device to compliment my N900. Day'am!

Nokia gets a Canadian CEO, he moves basically kills off MeeGo and their stocks tumble. HP gets a German CEO, he basically kills off WebOS and their stocks tumble.

wtf is going on?

This seems to be a trendy tactic with these Chiefs:

"The Pre 3 was released on August 17 in the United Kingdom. On 18 August, HP announced that it would be discontinuing all WebOS devices"

Re: HP says bye bye to webOS hardware

reading further I see

1. many websites remark (insider info) that the WebOS leads themselves hate the hardware used.

2. hp has been truly producing subquality hardware in recent history. Look at any hp laptop for instance - half the battery life, quarter the reliability, double the weight, at triple the price.

3. hp ceo announced that he is coming out of hardware business, but will continue WebOS as a platform/ licensing.

I would recommend shorting their stock.

if google mucks up their android offering, people will look for linux alternatives i.e. meego. that's the only hope i see for meego growing really large in a short time. :(

hope LG launch a new phone with meego. Really after using n900 , I was looking for new options , a new phone, after lot of consideration and careful thinking , I decided to choose pre with web os. That was looking closer to n900. Now one more option came to an end. So I am supporting cordia more .

That's better than Nokia. Elop said to discontinue MeeGo before they release N9.

And now Apotheker has been replaced and HP has a new CEO. Not suprising since HP lost 47% of value during his year as CEO. HP names Meg Whitman new President and CEO, gives Leo Apotheker the boot.

Now, if only another CEO that caused loss of 48% value in his first 12 months could also be fired...

Actually, now that MS decided to go with the tile interface crap for Windows 8, a lot of people might eventually switch to WP7.
