a) need a better verification system for registration and starting threads.
b) make a few tmo members mods who can benefit from the time differences and block and delete spam.

Also, we need a way to remotely electrocute spammers... maybe a few TMO members too. ;)

This may be helpful - a bunch of mods for vBulletin to prevent spambots:

Some of the plugins seems more sane than another - especially the last one sounds great. Anyway, I'm posting them all, just in case.

If there are any spam threads on how to increase one's private junk size, mind saving those for me? :)

Your inadequacy is duly noted.

Please mods give the right to delete threads and ban users to some respectable community members so that you don't have to waste so much time fighting the bots. And we have to start thinking about moving to a more modern and preferably open source bulletin board software

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

There is a new generation of spambots.

There are several anti-spam plugins installed on the forum already:

1. Random Image Verification:
https://img.skitch.com/20110918-rqeg...jp.preview.jpg

2. vbStopForum Spam
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=176481

3. Random Question
https://img.skitch.com/20110918-nbyj...4h6du9igsd.jpg

These are usually are enough to stop spambots.

I have now activated a level two spam check:

4. Spam Check 2:
https://img.skitch.com/20110918-b6u1...pdc5pnj43f.jpg

So, it's now four levels of spam protection. There is actually a 5th level where a range of IP address have been blocked already.

Anyway, I hope this slows them down. As always, if you see a spam post, don't bother replying to it. Just use the 'Report This' link and report it. No need to report all the posts of the same spammer. Just report one and we have a tool to delete all of its posts, ban it and its IP, and add its IP to the vbStopForum database so other forums using the plugin get protected as well.

Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.

I should have the right to delete and clean the bots out of this community as lets face it nothing much better to do these days and by god it is frustrating waiting for one of the mods to get in here and clean them out when i am sitting here watching it all happen EVERY day.

Well done Texrat and Reggie for starting the war against them.

Let's not turn another thread into one of those.

Estel 2011-09-18 03:14

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

Reggie, please consider installing other protection method. Especially last one from my post - field during registration, invisible to user (so no user can fill it), but visible to bots, so they fill it and fail - seems interesting.

It's perfectly visible that this generation of spambots is immune to current protection method. I even doubt if 5th line. would work.

Remember, more niche (less popular) protection method is used, the more effective it's against bots. No one write special spambots for maemo.org. Our current protection methods are damn popular, so they're almost of no-use.

I'm visiting tmo this weekend just to see what the battle plan is against these spambots. Far more interesting than the N9 is not here thread ;-)

Yes. I'm pretty sure what what he's afraid of is that you would be even more corrupting to this place than I would be with moderator powers. I can at least admit it. :)

the bots' numbers are declining rapidly, they are under 2.5k now !

also, this is new:
Most users ever online was 6,783, Today at 08:32 PM.

how many IDs have these bots registered already ? I fear the big crowd of bots have not posted yet, but has already registered, maybe that's why the additional security question has no effect ? as they simply registered before that took effect.
this can also explain the very high number of users, that logged in today.

as a counter measure, please completely stop new registrations at talk.maemo.org, (maybe add a request for invitation form instead), and ban and delete all accounts with zero posts that has registered in the last 2 weeks.

hopefully, there will be minimal collateral damage if this is done..

Hello, everybody!
Just a quick thought.
Since most of the people who have maemo device or are anyhow involved into developing/testing/programming stuff have already registered on this forum, I suggest creating an invitation system. What do You think, guys?

I wouldn't be here if it be via invite system. Not that I'm in any way a good contributor, but I believe that an invite system is more likely to drive away good than bad users. And at any rate, all a bad guy need is just ONE invite, than he can invite like 10 fakes that will then invite other 100 fakes and start all over again. While I would still be out, for instance.

I had a strong feeling this was going to esculate into a rather huge problem so more reason for help for the mods, if suggestions can be made i am sure everyone will help.

Texrat is going to be extremely overworked and already non paid.... ouch.

Well, it's more a pain for the community than it is for me. There are, after all, other moderators.
