That little extra bit of screen size surely isn't worth that much. I'm sure they might be paying MS some sort of licensing fee, so why the hell is it so much cheaper? It feels like a slap in the face for those who want Nokia HW and more importantly SW.

Nokia wants to recoup those millions they put to developing
MeeGo. Windows Phone they did not have to put R&D resources into.

N9 also got higher reso screen, NFC, front camera and 1GB of RAM, all missing from 800.

As N9 64GB owner i see no reason for 800, might get 710.

I think you'd have to put a gun to my head to force me to use the anything with MS logo stamped to it.

I highly unlikely be buying any of the WP7 phones, I think I'm stuck with Android (Ice cream looks good with multi-tasking), or Tizen if Samsung can be bothered to make a phone with decent build quality, decent microphone and loudspeaker - i.e. built for voice clarity not acting like a chav and blasting music.

Depends on whether it's available for WP7.5 - you can't just install the desktop version, and I doubt that it's as simple as just recompiling for ARM either.

Whats the point in a windows phone if it wont run windows software?

You can't. It has half the ram of the N9 and has a completely different SoC.

Was that a valid question, or are you teasing us? Do you know the differences between Windows CE / Pocket PC / Mobile / Phone / Luggable (whatever they call their embedded stuff for the next two years) and Windows for Desktops and Servers?

Here, "Windows" is meant as in some ported Windows APIs / frameworks etc. and foremost "Windows as a trademark". Not "Windows and. Windows" as in "binary compatible".

Nokia Lumia 800 vs Nokia N9

Nokia N9 lost only at his processor....

1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, PowerVR SGX530 GPU, TI OMAP 3630 chipset (n9)

1.4 GHz processor, Qualcomm MSM8255 chipset, 3D Graphics HW Accelerator (Lumia 800)

WP is finally as snappy as Harmattan. That .4GHz did manage to narrow that 1.5s break when loading apps. You also forgot the ram difference, 1GB vs 512MB.

Check this out, N9 vs HTC Radar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3frrZvX4Zs

Elop is a dumbutt.

You just summed up the problem - if I had windows 7 professional working on a very small form factor tablet, with phone functionality I would be very happy.

They're not looking that amazing at all to me personally...
Lumina 710 & 800, former was going to be called 703, according to rumors.
I wonder if there's one other they'll announce before EOY that's far more beefy overall?

Nokia Lumia 800: "Total user memory

16 GB mass memory (no slot for micro-SD cards) "
according to
http://www.nokia.co.uk/gb-en/product...pecifications/

No SD card?

I have 64GB on my N900!
So why should I buy that WP7 crap?

No dual core.
Battery BV-5JW 3.7V 1450mAh is also weak.
Capacitive . :-(
No lense cover as the N900 has.
A tiny flash (wonder how this will be usable).
No keyboard.

Small form factor but afaics the N9 already has that and I like the size and grip of my N900,
so this would be no USP.

Ok, the 710 may serve as entry point but the 800 is a big fail
if there does not follow anything better.

Well the Nokia is LUMIA not LUMINA. Are you spanish?

I am, and although I have to confess I wasn't sure what that word meant, now I do (www.rae.es, that's as authoritative as it gets).

So one can still say that Elop is a Lumia! :)

Must say I'm quietly encouraged by this if not massively overwhelmed with desire. Glad they stuck with the Poly N9 form design...that's a winner.

However I'm not convinced it'll have enough momentum to take on Android ICS...

Question is where are the Apps going to come from ?...& how quickly ? Plus .....I just can't believe they left NFC off - that's a potential gamechanger....surely there's another high-ender to come ?

Specs-wise when you factor in the price.....it looks like a loss-leader. However it won't get off the ground without the Apps.....does anyone know where these will come from ??

And...will Nokia Music work without WiFI ?

It all seems very locked - in a la Microsoft / Apple.....I don't want to be tied into SkyDrive/Bing/M$... I have my own preferences.....

And the keynote was very Microsoft & not very Nokia.....I sincerely hope Nokia isn't going to be absorbed...

Not letting my n900 go just yet.....

the design is nice, but why oh why:

1) is the homescreen with the tiles soooo ugly?! plus the tiles are inferior to widgets due to the small size, there is not enough space to project anything relevant.

2) are there no customizable homescreens? the n900 had the best solution with 100% fully customizable homescreens, this is what nokia should be building on.

3) is there no notification light??!

4) no windowsphone with a slideout keyboard?

Re: Nokia Lumina 710 & 800

I'm extremely naive. When Mr Elop said about the new handset "this is the first real Windows phone"

i stupidly took this to mean it was running the real windows operating system.

The specs is just ridicilous. Elop and the failing board is so damn desperate by using same design as N9. Funny when they also say "they dont want to release N9 in UK cause the consumers may be confiused cause they look the same" Oh really!? So why the **** use exact same design? Itrs obviours, they just talking bullcrap they so damn affraid N9 and Meego Harmattan would sell out ElopFailOS.

But I guess with alot of brain watching people may think WP strategy actually is better than Maemo Harmattan!

I remember last year we got pissed cause N9 was not released. But this year must be even bigger fail than last year.

Must say I love N9 even more after today Elop fail announcement

N9 is the best device comming from Nokia for years!

If you want customizing OS, go get an N9 and if you get dissapointed by SwipeUI, I Doubt, you can install some Community edition and "Plasma Active" and then you have customized homescreens ;)

Now try the same in WP7 phone I am sorry it will not work

Interesting article about this here:
"Nokia's Lumia translates as 'prostitute' in Spanish"
http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_news...ute-in-spanish

Btw. it is not hard to find:
http://www.wordmagicsoft.com/dictionary/es-en/lumia.php

In Italian it means : lime.
lumia (n) [f.] (botanica - frutto)

lime (n) (botanica - frutto)

Elop will have "sour" times on the Spanish speaking markets.
