Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Ok, so paint it black and it'll blend in. Not sure what the difference is. Once you have the case on it you don't see the metal strip nor will you likely take the case cover off. I think you're making a big deal of nothing really. The idea is to protect the device while carrying it around and not detract from the ease of use or access to the hardware buttons. I think this cover fits the bill. If you don't like the 'silver' color just because you know its there, paint it.

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
The metal strip on the battery cover seems a little clumsy... for the price, I would have expected the package to contain a replacement battery cover with the metal strip more aesthetically attached. :(
Other than that, I like it. |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Yea, I agree with you and the last post with a similar comment. Certainly could have been a black strip or a new back panel with the metal imbedded. Regardless, once you put the cover on you'll likely not take it off and you can't see the metal strip with the case attached. It feels sturdy, both the magentic connection at the back and the magnetic connection at the front are very firm. You really need to get your finger underneath the front cover edge to get it loose (this is good).

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
This is the bit I love:
“Note: Parts of the case are magnetic...... Do not place credit cards or other magnetic storage media near the case, because information stored on them may be erased.” So 16gb of data on the two SD cards is safe then? From what I have seen, the case arrangement on the N770 was nigh on perfect, so why then did Nokia make the decision to dump it? Can’t we have it back for the N800? |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
SteinyD, you did an excellent job with the photos, I have just been to Picasa to check them out. Thanks for doing that, it is a great help.
What material is the Nokia Case made from? It looks like leather in the photos or is it a synthetic? |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
I think I will continue using proporta's case.
|
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
thx for the pics.
Is the top cover strong? prob not as strong as the aluminum / leather case by proporta but does it protect the screen? Does this still come in read as the early details about this case said? |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
SteinyD, Thanks for the photos. I have a question for you or anyone who has this case.
Does the flap get in the way while using the tablet? Does the flap bend back and lay flat against the back? Thanks! Nash |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
I supposed you could force it to bend flat against the back. It doesn't feel like it was designed to do that. I just open it and let it hang as it wants. The weight of it doesn't seem to create an imbalance in your hand.

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
It is black. Didn't see any choices when ordering from buy.com. The cover is strong and compltely stiff.

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
It looks and feels like leather. I just read the packaging and no where does it suggest it is so I would question that. Though, for the price I would hope it is! :-)

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
HTML Code:
SD cards are not magnetic storage. Actually I am hoping that the case is not leather. I find it incongruous that we choose to encase hi tech equipment in dead animal skin. And even if it isn’t leather I also find it odd that it has to be a leather look alike. Apart from anything else all that folding, lining, seams and stitching just adds to the bulk. |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
I guess we all have things that make us 'tick' ... not sure that weight of stitching, make of material, etc., is all that important for a $35 case covering a $300 piece of equipment. To me, as long as it is form fitting, doesn't add bulk, protects the device and doesn't obscure the use of buttons or other accessible human interfaces, I'm good to go. This is why I don't like the Boxwave as it obscures the use of the stand, access to the pen and blocks easy access to the hardware navigation buttons.
Weight of stitches and 'dead animal' skins? Really? Quote:

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Well it was worth the wait and the price. :)
Like most, I have had issues finding the right case. At first I used the slip case that came with the device. I thought it was OK, but I knew I would get something better. I first ordered a cheap leather case from e-bay and it shipped from China. It was perfect, except it had a terrible smell like formaldehyde. so I returned it. I then decided to not be cheap, and I orderd the PD air case-book style. I thought for $10.00 more it will be very nice. Well it also had the exact same formaldehyde smell, so I returned it. So next I ordered the Box-Wave case that I have been happy with, and using for a while now...BUT it has no cover! Now I have the Nokia cover, and I love it. It has all of the good things that the box wave case has + a cover. I really like how the outer edge of the siver on the N800 shows when the cover is down. I love the clean lines look, it is very stylish. The photos don't do it justice. I have to mention that the cleaning cloth it comes with is no cheapo freebie. It's heavy and thick and has a nokia logo on it(for those that like that type of thing). It would be a $5.00-$7.00 cloth on it's own. Also the extra magnets are very nice. I won't use them but I may put them up anyway. They are quite large about 5/8" x 3" and also have a Nokia logo on them. I had no issue putting the magnet on the back of the N800. It's silver, my favorite, and the color works with the silver on the front and the back tab over the battery cover is silver too, so it all works. :) Sorry if I sound like such a Nokia fan freek. But when they try they do make some very nice things. And I must agree that the device is more easy to use in this cover than any other I have tried. When the cover is open and hanging fliped back, the weight of the flap makes the device feel balanced in your hand and makes it easier to hold. Nash |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
... and for all the reasons you outlined I have since returned the Boxwave leather case and their 'rubberized' Flexiskin and kept the Nokia cover. It protects but does not obstruct use of any of the N800 features. Both of the Boxwave products obstruct some use of buttons, stand, etc.

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Has anybody bought this case on ebay (about a half dozen people are selling them)? I was wondering if that case I listed has a screen protector built in.

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Expansys UK are now showing 15 September for availability... the date increases by 2 weeks every week... anyone know of another UK supplier that is or will be carrying this case?
Or is this another hoax as far as the UK is concerned? :) |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
At least it isn't exponential...
|
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
I wasn't looking for a book-style case for my N800, but a case in which I can slip it in and out. I was looking for something small, form-fitting, and with a side pouch if I wanted to carry headphones, stylus, etc.
I think the Waterfield Nintendo DS Lite Case (SFbags) is perfect. For $39, I got the "Black Pattern Nintendo DS Case" which provides adequate protection when I'm carrying it on the DC Metro. To be honest, I think it's a better case than Nokia's included case or "official case." |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
promethh - there's another thread discussing non-Nokia/official cases which almost certainly covers Nintendo DS-type cases. Every case has it's own plusses and minuses, the Nokia official case seems fairly unique in that it doesn't encase the whole device which is what appeals to some of us - if we wanted a case that encases the entire device, we'd no doubt have bought the DS case by now...

http://www.mobileplanet.com/p.aspx?i=105191 It's an almost perfect fit (with enough leeway for the earphone plug) and bloomingly cheap. I did change one thing: I removed the velcro and replaced it with a magnetic clip. Just 'cuz I don't like velcro. |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Hello new to the Nokia n800 (actually planning to buy it within the next 2 weeks). I have been checking around for some cases and since the dimensions are so close to the ds i am going to give this case a try from waterfield designs http://www.sfbags.com/products/ninte...nintendods.htm I have ordered cases from them before for my laptop and they are of very good quality. Im interested to see if anyone else has tried this ds case from Waterfield.

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
After much research, I've decided to get the official Nokia case/flap for my N800. I know it doesn't protect the edges of the N800, but this is probably the best case that I can get for what I want it primarily for:
1. Slim profile 2. Able to use the stand easily 3. Doesn't obstruct the usage of any ports or buttons 4. Protect the screen I'm not fond of the idea of having to glue a piece of metal strip on the back of the unit, but this is the best choice based on what I've mentioned. I just ordered mine from buy.com for $21+tax. It's listed for $31, minus $10 for google check out, free shipping, + tax. Not bad at all. |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Finally available for purchase from Expansys UK - it says 10 in stock but should be 9 now, as I've just bought one. :)
$21+tax? Flipping heck... it's £25.95 ($52) in rip off Britain. :( |

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
My official case arrived today... it's pretty good! Fits well, nice quality, padded, and it has magnets at the front so that it snaps down over the screen and doesn't flap about, I'm liking it an awful lot (even though it is damned expensive over here!) I'd definitely recommend this, particularly if you can pick it up for $21+tax.
I also bought a Nokia CA-100 USB charger adaptor - works fine with the N800, I'm charging it now from a computer which only has an old USB1.1 socket (it's my Linux PC which is based on a dual processor Slot-1 server class motherboard - a bit long in the tooth...!) :) |

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Yeah I've got one.
Pros: :) Good screen protectionCons: :( Offers no protection for left, right and bottom sidesOverall, I like it, I just wish they'd made it just a bit wider, to offer side protection. :o |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Could someone who has the official Nokia case please post some pictures of it somewhere because what is available on the Nokia sites is just not enough to understand how it works (how is it attached etc...).
This is where one of Thoughtfix's unpackaging + testing youtube videos would be real nice... Dwardo. |

Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Just received my case from buy.com today. I liked the case a lot, especially because it doesn't add too much extra thickness to the N800. The case leaves the left, right, and bottom open, but I'm ok with that. The magnet embedded in the case is quite strong, it's holding the case to the N800 without problem. Heck of a deal for $21+tax.
Someone already posted pictures of the N800 with the case, so I won't post more pictures. But here's a few pictures of what's in the package: The package contains the case, a metal strip, 2 magnets, instruction booklets, and a cloth. http://media.twango.com/m1/large/008...dd2f260ac5.jpg The plastic case took a little beating on the way here, but the case is ok. http://media.twango.com/m1/large/008...94c89bda10.jpg Picture of the 2 magnets. http://media.twango.com/m1/large/008...9e60b6494e.jpg |
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Expansys UK seem to be doing a good trade with these cases... 3 days ago they had 29 in stock, now down to 13, which isn't bad - healthy demand! :)
|
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
Don't know in the UK but in the rest of europe the nokia shop seems cheaper than expansys (29? plus 5 for shipping)
|
Re: Official Nokia N800 Case
I just got mine yesterday. The price (nearly €44 plus delivery from Expansys) left kind of a bad taste in my mouth but I like the way the cover (a) doesn't add much bulk or weight and (b) protects the screen while still leaving it easy to get at everything. I feel a lot happier about sticking the tablet in my pocket (though obviously not the same pocket as my bank cards, because of the magnet).

It's examples like this that make me despair at Nokia - their online store is abysmal, it's impossible to even buy replacement styluses for the 770/N800 unless you know the "hidden" link to the relevant pages! Sort it out Nokia... if your online shop is this bad, forget about trying to build a services portal. |
