Okay, that's the first I've heard about this.

I've always wondered why GV was completely free, like what does Google get by offering such a service?

Probably location based advertising/spying or they're planning to put up their own Telecom business and GV to them, is all but a test bed :)

BUT, GV to GV is forever free.. It's only the Free GV to non-GV (US and Canada) that will soon end... I'm still hoping it won't :D

Most of @BlinkThinks setting would apply for N9. If you just use the settings from simonics and plug them into N8XX Sip app you should be good to go. That being said I have found that inbound calls donīt always connect on the first, second etc try (I have 4 phone numbers tied to GV). To get around this problem I still use my sipgate sip account (impossible to get now) also with the simonics sip, sipgate answers and simonics calls.

Now the outbound calls work just about 98% of the time with no callback. :) When I make outbound calls the ringing on my end starts about 10+or- seconds before my party hear their phone ring. For me itīs no deal breaker, also the call is clear on both ends (cable internet or WiMax)

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

I tried tutorial posted by BlinkThinks on first page, but even with rebooting device twice, and multiple tries it keeps checking and then returns with cannot connect error on my N9.
BTW trying it on wifi network, since N9 cannot see my wifi currently.

BlinkThinks 2011-12-06 19:54

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Arie, check your (secret) / password. You may have missed any letter. It's case sensitive. Set Keep alive to Auto. If you have access to your Wifi Router's settings, port forward UDP port 5060-5080 to your N9's IP address. If your router supports QOS, set the N9's IP address to highest as well, also port 5060-5080.

What do you mean? Are you trying it on 3G or on Wifi? Your statement says both WifI and is contradictory...

sorry about that, i meant trying on 3g because i can never get lock on WiFi for some weird reasons (not much worried about it)

It all depends on how good you 3G/3.5G connection is. You should try it first via your WiFi. If your account gets through, your 3G/3.5G connection may be not good enough.

So I found this sip call with gv from you. So thanks. Mine works. Question however. What do you view as the most significant thing about this capability?

Free calls to/from US and Canada numbers. (Until service lasts) and free GV to GV calls.

Tried it again this morning with 3G and it connected and have been using it all day. The quality is super clear on both sides. Thank you

No problems receiving incoming calls over 3G/3.5G on my part. reception and clarity is great.

yes no problems with incoming calls

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Since there is no need to forward to another number, am I right in saying that this is a better setup than e.g. ipkall+callcentric?

BlinkThinks 2011-12-10 04:27

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

@ch88xy

I've since dropped my IPKall+callcentric since using this setup - considering calls from IPKall were choppy most of the times. You may however try both and check which one works better for you.

I have yet to get an incoming call.

Weird.

Hi .. its asking for GV number starting with 1 .. does that mean its only for people living in the USA ? pls advise .. and by GV number i understand you have to provide your own cell number with country and area codes ?

BlinkThinks 2011-12-10 05:32

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Addison, in your Google Voice account, check if 'Call Screening' is activated. You can either turn it off, or save all your 'trusted callers' in your GV contacts. Also try to activate "Forward your calls to Google Chat".

That sorted things out during my initial setup.

GV is only free for calls in the US and Canada and GV to GV accounts. Yes you need to provide a US phone number (mobile/landline) where GV will call during the initial setup and verify your account.

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Hey Blink.

Here's a snippet of what I got in the mail today from Simon Telephonics.

Since October 29, GVGW has connected...

405 calls from users' SIP devices to Google Voice (outgoing calls)
1149 calls from Google Voice to SIP (incoming calls)
Asterisk 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8, Nokia handhelds, ATAs (analog telephone adapters), SIP IP phones, and soft phones to Google Voice
for 86 registered users

Can you explain what any of this gibberish means? :)

Free calls in the US to other numbers, though it's not as useful to me because I'm on an unlimited everything plan.

SIP devices to Google Voice means calls that people made from their phones to other numbers.

Calls from Google Voice to SIP means calls that people made coming in.

86 is the number of registered users.

So Arie - so with our set up calls to our gv # go thru the gvgw now? If not, how do we get/receive calls via gvgw?

I love the experience so far.

I have, however can't figure out how. Prolly caller id.

Addison 2011-12-14 03:45

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

Thanks Arie.

When it said "405 calls" and "1149 calls", I read that completely all wrong.

I thought those were some type of special texting or call features I never heard of before.

Stupid brain. :)

From what I understand that calls go through the simoncs server. Yeah, we receive calls through their server.

Its been over a week now that I am trying to set up this SIP again since I had to clear my device and I have been having H*ll, no matter where and what kind of connection I try I keep getting "Can't connect to SIP", any one knows anything on this issue?

Addison 2012-01-25 21:09

The SIP number I got from this thread is still working strong so I have no idea on what your troubles might be.

Sorry.

If it matters any, since i lost my first secret code i went and deleted my account from simonic.com and then created a new one, and have been trying with the new credentials.

Maybe your old junk is still stored somewhere.

I guess you could do a reflash if this is really important for you.

somedude 2012-01-25 21:52

Re: N9 SIP account with GoogleVoice

for now until i get this sorted and have not been travelling, i just go to voice.google.com and make it dial the international number and have it forwarded to my regular phone, is working good so far but this was very convenient, will try again and see what it does tonight at a different WiFi hotspot.

I did have it checked.
I went to the site and test it, not ringing?
What else did you have it checked on the GV web page?
