Any plans to add a feature that identifies music (the way Instinctiv did on my N900) ?

Great looking app btw. You can tell a lot of love has gone into this. Cheers! :)

Re: QuasarMX - Awesome music player!

Sorry for being silent! I am currently busy working on a few new things in QuasarMX. The new approach to EQ looks promising and support for album artist tags and compilations was just finished. I am also working on the libary and playlist management. Beta 3 might include some of these new features, though I am not sure if the EQ will be ready in time.

Also, got the N900 fixed, so a version might come out once I have Beta 3 finished.

PS and selfish plug: If you want the latest news, follow me on Twitter. I am only following this thread infrequently, sorry.

So why don't start looking in here more frequently? We offered you very decent feedback and what you just said sounds kinda "want me? come to me, i am too important to check on your guys". That's bad PR, really.

Thanks for your feedback. I am working on QuasarMX in my freetime as my pet project and while I like to read and appreciate your input, I am focusing my time on development at the moment. So, that is why I am not replying immediately here.

Of course. There's no rush. I appreciate your work and I am not the only one. It's just that "sorry" sounded haughtily. Okay, let's move on. I am excited to see any new version of QuasarMX whenever it's published, but you already know that.

Nope, still available, albeit only Beta 2. I just posted Beta 3 to the store's QA. Might take a while to appear.

I think it opened a browser in the background? Sorry I did it only once and forgot the exact procedure.

Great app for MeeGo. I can found music by style.

question : when can we have the RC ? :D

Re: QuasarMX - Awesome music player!

This is my new player. Apparently, I have too much music either for the built-in player or Sigma :( reassuring though to use an app developed by someone who's also a mad collector.

The only issue I seem to have with B3 so far is that, as someone posted earlier, there's no intuitive way to start playing all tracks in random order. Being able to simply press “play” would make sense. (What I do instead: make sure I have no filters on, go to the search tab, make sure random and repeat are on, and tap any track I feel like listening to.)

My personal wishlist:
  • Lock screen UI like the stock player (not sure Meego exposes the API for that yet)
  • Some other way to skip a song while locked (maybe shaking the phone like Sigma?)
  • If playing is paused by unplugging the headset, resume play when I plug it back

As you see, my personal priorities revolve around listening to music without taking the n9 out of my pocket ;)

EQ is nice but I can wait...

Thanks for the fantastic app!

Re: QuasarMX - Awesome music player!

i have one other thing.

i am driving a c-class and it has a navigation system with multiple options if its about audio. i can either make the music mute completely when there is an announcement or i can make the music more quiet or i can have both at the same volume. can that be integrated as well? sound stops at the moment when the maps software is talking

Re: QuasarMX - Awesome music player!

Hey, eviljazz, how you doing?

All the PR1.2 mess got me thinking.

DLNA

Have you ever considered DLNA for QuasarMX, so e.g. if could read remote content on home network?

foobar's DLNA plugin is using this DLNA API:
http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_upnp (plugin)
http://plutinosoft.com/platinum (api)

If you have time and you're interested in possibly adding this, check out that link. That's would be something, that is, to have a N9 all powerful play with DLNA support.

bass and treble knobs for Quasar

We don't really need a set of complicated equalizers, especially as on a touch-device adjusting them can be tricky, especially on the move.
How about two simple knobs adjusting the frequencies, that is, like on a regular hi-fi amp?

They could look like this, for example look at this:

http://i.imgur.com/YiRDR.png

I am pretty sure most users will welcome such a solution. Let me know what you think!

Cheers!

Re: QuasarMX - Awesome music player!

Yesterday I confirmed a suspicion: when the music is interrupted because of a notification sound (message, alarm, calendar), it doesn't resume. That's a bit of a bummer.

And to everyone suggesting bass/treble instead of a full EQ: you realise that's not actually significantly easier, right? There's two components to either solution: the UI, and applying actual filters to the sound. The UI is just about as complex for two knobs, three, five, or nine. (Ok, more than 9 in the n9 screen would be a problem.) And the applying effects is the really difficult part; as eviljazz has said, the backend he's using for playing the sound doesn't support EQ, so at the very least that would mean writing an adapter for a whole other backend, and based on what we've seen for other players, it seems an implementation capable of an EQ would eat your batteries a lot faster (since you can't let the hardware decode the music). So again, in that case, 2 channels or 9 would be about the same effort.

Re: QuasarMX - Awesome music player!

Pausing is caused by the Qt Multimedia back end and there is no way to stop it from doing this, AFAIK. My Phonon back end does not do this but has other issues, namely power consumption.

After some weeks of on and off development time, my current stand on the equalizer issue is, either we do it right or we don't do it at all.
I had to interrupt development temporarily but next week is the start of my three weeks of vacation, so who knows what will happen in this time (first week for Mass Effect 3, that is for sure :)
Either way, version 1.0 for N9 will surface before March, 15th and it will not contain the equalizer. @DarkSkies, as lalomartins described, it is not a cosmetic issue at the moment. Your suggestion is nice. I will add that to the TODO list. Bass and treble can actually be optimized better than a generic equalizer by using a specialized IIR filter. We will see how that works out, especially in the power consumption department. As lalomartins mentioned, most of the work is spend in other parts of the processing pipeline. Other music players mostly use the GStreamer plugins "equalizer-10bands" et al. which do not seem to be very optimized for mobile demands + the GStreamer abstraction also adds its toll here (unnecessary buffer copying etc.).

As for the N900 support, the Qt Quick support in N900's Qt 4.7.0 is really buggy, to the extent that I can't even pass QObject pointers from QML to Q_INVOKABLE C++ methods without corrupting the stack (Qt developers can follow me here). This all works perfectly in 4.7.1 and up. I really need to find a workaround or this port is dead in the water.
Does the Community SSU finally contain a Qt version higher than 4.7.0 that is stable?

evilJazz 2012-03-04 16:15

Re: QuasarMX - Awesome music player!

@DarkSkies: I plan to add audio streams from URL/HTTP. As for DLNA or other streaming technologies I am brutally honest, it is not planned - simply because I never use these features and there are other players that are specially designed for such purposes. I may change my mind though.

CSSU now have Qt Version 4.7.4, according to me its 85% stable.

Sure, but is there a way to resume once the notification (or, to be ambitious, phone call!) is over? I believe the stock player does that.

Thanks for the reply, though, and happy Mass Effect :D

That's the version that expires on me, unless if reinstalled the 'expire counter' is reset. Is it?

Re: QuasarMX - Awesome music player!

I have only one suggestion.

It is a great app, however I use the music player alot when Im working out. I have an arm holster... and while the swipe gesture is amazing in everything else... when it comes to jogging that whole thing SUCKS !!!
Its a bit difficult to change songs when you are having to jog and try to swipe fingers across the screen. So my thought was this and while it may not be possible I still want to throw it out there...

Is it possible for the Music player to have an option where instead of having the time on the lock screen it has an option that is live the whole time ( maybe a setting called workout mode) that lets you skip, pause, play, and go back... and have it as a horizontal selection ( skip fwd is on the bottom of screen, pause maybe at the right, play on the left, and back on the top. Pretty much to sum up all my rambling. If the music player can be in landscape mode and overriding the lock screen while jogging... with big buttons easy to see and touch while working out. If you can create let alone understand my ramblings I would gladly pay for this app. !

other than that... I absolutely love love love the app.

Great application but its very difficult to change songs and sorting the songs with lists is missing.I think that would be awesome music player when thoose things been fixed.

Great work :)

Re: QuasarMX - Awesome music player!

Thanks for a great music app, evilJazz. Lots of features, runs smoothly and doesn't consume a lot of battery power. There are some areas which it could be improved on to make it an even greater app. I agree with lalomartin's suggestion on the lockscreen controls so you don't have to unlock the phone to do so. I also like lastmilefire's suggestion on a "workout" mode as I intend to use my N9 while running. The large buttons could actually be usable as well for a car mode.

Keep up the good work! :)

Re: QuasarMX - Awesome music player!

Or, this being Meego...

how about instead of/before all these extra control options, you add a simple DBUS interface? Then we can script it for you... I think we'd need:
  • get status (playing/paused, song title, time position)
  • play/pause
  • next
  • previous

bonus if you can do:
  • subscribe or broadcast status change (not time, of course, just play/pause and song change)
  • get album art
