Re: [Announce] POP Flix

Everyone,

I added HQ Quality to the movie trailers. So now all the trailers are coming form YouTube. I added an option to Send Movie Trailer errors, so I can be notified of failed trailers and/or no trailers. Additionally, I added a Timeline to the OP.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Having some issues updating. It didn't show up in the "normal" way, so I went to the store and clicked on update, the download started then stopped saying "Can't install, already installed". The version I have installed is still 0.9. I will try again later.

Thanks for letting me know. I saw 0.0.10 on the app store and thought everyone would see the update, but it probably takes time for the update to through all the servers.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear enough. I CAN see the new version there. I click the "Update" button, then the download stops and an error screen pops up saying "Can't install, already installed".

For some reason once the download begins it thinks it is installing something that is already there, which obviously it is not since the version numbers are different.

The same thing happened to me. Just uninstall version 0.9 and then go back into the store and install the new version. Voilą!

If I recall correctly, many of us had issues with the initial app store download of version 0.9 and had to install from terminal or from a file manager. Perhaps that's why there is an issue with the update. Then again, the Nokia app store messes up a lot no matter what, so who knows? It's just very tempermental, I suppose . . .

So you want to see the Movie Album Art in the Gallery? Currently it's being saved here:

/home/user/popflix/cache/

I don't see the albums in my gallery on both my phones. Does anyone else have this issue?

Hmmm strange, all thumbs are shown in my gallery.
Quite annoying but if you say I'm the only one, would like to know the solution :)

No problem here. I don't see them either.

If you delete the images, do they come back when you launch the app? Are you on PR 1.2? or PR 1.3?

Yeah, I think it's pretty annoying to see the thumbs in the gallery, which is why i'm saving them outside the MyDocs folder so they wouldn't be included in the gallery.

I could have an option to store the images in the /tmp folder, but the only problem with this is that when you reboot all the thumbs would be cleared.

Take the filename from gallery and in terminal do "find /home/user/ | grep FILE_NAME" or "find /home/user/ -name FILE_NAME" to find where it really is coming from; could be in multiple locations hence the indexing...

Ho, ho, ho. There has been some sort of modification to YouTube, which is creating playback problems with Pop Flix. The same issue impacted Harmattan CuteTube, by Marxian, which required a small update.

Is there anytime for a quick holiday update of Pop Flix??

Yeah, if I can figure it out. It looks like videos are being forbidden or the connection ends unexpectedly. I don't know if YouTube is cracking down but they blocked my sever IP while testing.

Interesting though, going to the web browser does play the video. So with that being said, I can push a build out that does either of the following:

  1. 1. Play Button opens YouTube link on browser
  2. 2. Play Button attempts to Play Movie, if it fails it alerts you of the error and allows you to open the YouTube link on browser.

Re: [Announce] POP Flix

I'm anxiously waiting for a fix. I hope it can be fixed to play trailers inside the app instead of being kicked out to a browser.

If the browser solution is the only way will it require flashplayer to play? If it does this means having to set the default browser to Firefox which is not the preferred choice of many users.

Maybe you want to have a word with marxian? He has got his cuteTube apps for n9 & n900 working just 2-3 days ago with the new YouTube authentication methods...

I like either option for an update, thanks! I suppose that the current playback approach is so likely to fail (few attempts work) that it might make sense to go directly to the YouTube video--perhaps it's most important to select a video link that doesn't have a commercial attached.

I really think that there may be a workaround to this latest YouTube issue--the link to Marxian's N9 CuteTube post, which had a similar issue, is here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=75197

his profile link for direct message is there, if you think it might be any help. Thanks again!

None. Even if a fix is found the developer will still have to submit to ovi store for approval which may take a few days provided it isn't kicked back for some pointless issue or other which has always been there and never mentioned before.

I would say let's hope for before New Year's day.

I just submitted v0.11 to the Nokia Store, which includes the following:
* Added Clear Cache Button
* Added Privacy Statement
* Added Trailer Workaround + Settings Option

The New Setting's Option allows you auto launch the youtube link when it gets the YouTube video; If this is not set and there is an error you will be prompted the error + be allowed to open the link via the web browser.

Hopefully v0.12 will include a youtube fix. Also at a later build the loading time to get the YouTube video will be removed.

Usually the turnaround time to get posted is 2-3 days, if it gets approved.

Just updated to the newest version. Thanks for the temporary fix. I can't wait to have trailers launch automatically again without having to launch the , but for the time being, this is great. Thanks for all of your hard work.

Installed Pop Flix 0.11 but it is a stop gap measure at best. The trailer plays in the browser at small size and low resolution. Hope the youtube problem can be fixed soon and we can have the same video quality as before.

Wow, show a little appreciation. First, the developer quickly responded--during the holidays--to address a situation to provide us a nice stop-gap measure. Second, resolution is adjustable in the settings menu, which I assume you haven't seen or used, as it allows 360p and 480p. Thirdly, there are already plans for a more complete fix of the issue, mentioned only a few posts above yours.

So, maybe a simple "thank you" is more in order.

The resolution adjustment does not affect the browser based trailer which I assume you haven't tried. This stop gap measure is not ideal and I'm providing feedback to the developer so what's your beef? If nobody comments the developer may think everything is satisfactory and not proceed further.

First, your claim that, "the developer may think everything is satisfactory and not proceed further" is nonsense because the dev's post, which was only a couple posts above your complaint clearly describes that another version is coming--proving that he knew of the issue and was acting to address it. Did you read his post? Oh, yeah, the part about version 0.12 and the plan to hopefully fix the Youtube feature even better.

Second, the browser based trailer plays with High Quality "HQ" on the Youtube page, which is superior to the mobile resolution that was originally used in this app and which provides a picture quality that is about the best I've seen on my N9. I know because I have tried it, and I've tried the post-fix Cutetube solution--all of which produce a very similar high-quality picture on my device. At least more than adequate for a couple 2 minute movie clips.

While I appreciate that you edited your post to tone it down, only beef is that I found your unedited post rude and unsupportive. I'm sorry if I misinterpreted your posts, but I think we should be actually helpful in this community, to users and devs alike.

Kein 2012-12-28 13:29

Re: [Announce] POP Flix

The developer said "Hopefully v0.12 will include a youtube fix." Which part of this you don't understand? It doesn't mean it is coming for sure. You have interpreted a hopeful statement as a sure thing. I take it to mean that it will depend on the effort required and the demand for it. If users are satisfied with this stop gap measure there is no need to expend too much effort to find a fix.

I see no reason to jump on me for giving polite feedback to the developer. There was nothing in my original post to incite a normal person.

Edit: Trailer quality depends on default browser set. Both Opera Mobile and Firefox gives small screen and low resolution, not adjustable. The N9 browser tries to play in HD but usually fails 4 out of 5 times with an error message.

Hacker 2012-12-28 14:08

Re: [Announce] POP Flix

Look, alerting a dev to an issue he may not know about is one thing. Whining like a 12 year-old is another. I think you're whining. Several members--including me and you and the dev-- have been talking about this issue for the last two pages of the thread--of course the dev knows about it! He talks about fixing the movie clip feature in the next version, and he talks about further improving after that. I have no reason to doubt his resolve and it seems obvious what the plan is.

I can't stop you from whining, but when you're whining about a dev who is doing a good job, then I'll object. Plain. And. Simple.

why whine about it? Is that the sort of community we want? A bunch of whiners?

Kein 2012-12-29 01:28

Re: [Announce] POP Flix

Look Hacker, I wasn't whining, I was telling the developer in a few short sentences that the stop gap measure isn't of the same standard. If you want to be a sanctimonious fawning puppy dog that is your right but leave me out of it. People like me hope to spur the developer forward but if your type express satisfaction with a stop gap measure what incentive is there to do any more? You are a hindrance to this community of users.

Guys, still the art is popping up in my gallery.
The data is downloaded to the cache folder but those are getting indexed by tracker. clearing cache is solving this of course but would like to know how this art is hidden automatically.

Do one thing take the name of one of those files from gallery and in terminal do a find:
Code:

find /home/user/MyDocs | grep FILE_NAME
You'll find exactly which folder in MyDocs is causing the issue and then you can put a .dot on it...

And it still appears in gallery? Your tracker is working over-time :p

Check it system-wide by substituting /home/user/MyDocs with just a / then you'll see where it appears...

How do you normally make a folder hidden?

I"m using this command to create the folder:
Code:

QDir().mkdir(cache);
Maybe you can delete the cache folder and make a new folder with the same name but with hidden permission?

I could change the folder to be ".cache" instead of "cache" but i'm not sure if that would resolved your issue.

I'm not sure about N9 but on the N900 Tracker did not show images from hidden folder, so maybe .cache will help.

And I have a question, I'd like to embed videos on my app, is your app opensource? I'd like to see how to do it. Thanks

The app is not opensource, but I am using this project to play the videos:

Send me an IM an I can send you code sample. Or you can look at this project that uses the Video Project:
