This looks very good. Anyone knows how to save the playlist. Are there any plans to add genres, artist... or is it there or already and I just don't know how to use it yet? But I mostly need to save my playlist. Thx

Nope, not yet: https://www.guardiani.us/projects/kagu/ticket/94
Genres? Yeah, there's a ticket for that: https://www.guardiani.us/projects/kagu/ticket/45

Looks like we've got a mix of playlist and theme functionality scheduled for 1.0.7. It may be too much work for one release, so we might have to pick one or the other and save the rest for 1.0.8. we'll see.

Edit: BTW, 300x300 makes a nice compromise between viewability and file size.

BTW, since this is true, I've decided to make 300xH (where H is the height proportional to width where width = 300px) the default for album cover art with smaller than 300px width. 300xH isn't too pixelated. It looks pretty good. This change will make it into the next release.

Can I stream music from my Mac using this app? If so, how?

No. Not yet anyway. I don't have a whole lot of interest in this myself as I use my n800 like an ipod with local storage. But I wouldn't mind a bit if someone from the community added UPnP or streaming audio support to Kagu.

We've got a ticket already for streaming audio (think, Gnump3d): https://www.guardiani.us/projects/kagu/ticket/73

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.6

trevarthan -

I've noticed one little hiccup in 1.0.6 that I don't remember hearing before, but then there wasn't a playlist or skip-ahead feature. After I add an album or songs to the playlist and play through A2DP, I get skipping every 8-10 seconds, but only if Kagu is the forefront app. If I minimize it and go to the desktop, than the playback is flawless. I have no other apps running, so Kagu should have the whole CPU to itself, Wifi is off.

This is strange, it seems like it should be the other way around. Maybe there is some type of polling going on in playlist mode that is consuming the CPU...I'm not a programmer, so I don't know the right terminology. Hopefully you can duplicate this behavior, or someone else has noticed it...

We lowered the amount of time per cycle that Kagu sleeps in 1.0.6 trying to improve scroll widget responsiveness. Unfortunately, it causes playback problems with A2DP (sleep less = chew up more CPU) and it makes charging a bit less effective while kagu is in the foreground. Not to mention the fact that it reduces battery life. I'm not happy with it either. I don't think it was worth it. We'll probably be removing the change for 1.0.7 and going back to the old behavior.

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.6

Thanks for the quick reply...I hope you do change back, it worked much better before. I've been listening now for about an hour and a half, streaming over A2DP to a pair of BT speakers, and it hasn't skipped at all...but I do have Kagu minimized.

One thing I have been wondering about...the volume control doesn't seem to do anything when using A2DP, which is no biggie since most devices have their own volume control. If I were to leave the volume all the way down at 0%, would the N800 use less battery, or does it matter?

Yeah, that's what I've been doing too. Sorry for the hassle.

No, I don't think it matters. I don't think there is any way to change the A2DP volume from the n800. Could be wrong though. It would be a bluez/bluetooth-alsa/a2dpd thing.

Now here is something interesting...when I was getting the skipping problem earlier, I had three entire albums queued in the playlist, and my N800 was charging. Now I have just one album playing, and the N800 is fully charged...no skipping!

I have Kagu open with the playlist showing, and it is working fine now...so it's either the charging or the multiple albums causing the skipping...hope that helps...

On my WinMo devices, I can control the volume from the system volume control slider and on the BT device itself. Plus, if Windows Media is playing, that's a third volume control to have to mess with.

I'll keep an eye on battery usage and see if it helps at all and post here with any good news...

Yeah, but again, it's an upstream bluez/bluetooth-alsa/a2dpd issue that we have no control of (short of going digging in the bluetooth-alsa code base). We're actually changing the alsa volume while playing back A2DP audio, but a2dpd doesn't seem to care.

I'm just glad BT works, the volume control is not that important, since all the headphones and speakers that I use have their own volume controls. Luckily the BT stack you are using has a loud enough default volume, otherwise it might be a problem.

I got me a set of BT speakers to use here at work, and I've had Kagu going almost all day...flawless operation, and the sound quality is very hard to distinguish from a standard line in. The new playlist feature is great, lets me ignore the N800 for 3-4 hours at a time.

Can't wait to see what 1.0.7 brings to the table...

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.6

trevarthan,
I know it is not easy to integrate all those playlist wishes, but for me the recent changes from .4 to .6 did not really translate well into the real world. As it is now in .6, whenever I select one track, it is added to the playlist instead of being played back. Now I open on album, klick on "CD+", the Playback starts from track one, but when I am bored with this track and klick on track 4 instead, it does not jump to track4, but just "adds this to the playlist"...???
Previousely, when I was in playback and selected another track and presses PAUSE and PLAY, I could jump to this other track.. Any chance to combine this "older" behaviour with the Playlist programming? At the moment Playlists are anyway not really usefull, as one can not see the playlist and jump around within it...
just my two cents,
karl.

You can see the current playlist by clicking/touching the album cover on the lower right. And jump songs from there. Another touch to the cover will zoom in on the cover image, and third touch will take you to the song position screen where you can seek thru the current playing track.

So, to add whole album to the playlist and switch to the fourth track, click on the CD+ button, click the lower-right album image, click the fourth song.

(trev: maybe we should switch to the "Now Playing" screen if the album was added to an empty playlist)

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.6

Its good to know someone else in the earlier posts has the same problem i do. On the new updated firmware on the n800 kagu music scanner crashes and closes about halfway through the downloads. Then it shows you have no music. The only way to get music is to uncheck the download images selection, but then all the images are the default unknown. If anyone knows a solution to this problem i'd greatly appriciate it, i love kagu and the new features would greatly add to my experience.

Thanks in advance for any help

I would *really* like to see the backtrace please. SSH into your tablet, run `kagu-scanner`, then when it crashes, copy and paste the last 10 lines or so here. We want to do what we can to fix the scanner album art crashes, but so far nobody has sent us traces.

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.6

I would try to do the backtrace, but Kagu started working fine for me under mysterious circumstances. I had gone so far as to uninstall and reinstall Kagu and get rid of the language-learning files that I thought were causing my crash, and Kagu still didn't run. It went thru the scanning process ok but then crashed as soon as I tried to run an mp3 file. I had the feeling that somehow even though I uninstalled and reinstalled it, it was reusing some file that it had been using when it was crashing due to the language-learning files.

So I gave up, temporarily. Then, in a totally unrelated incident, I uninstalled and reinstalled Canola and discovered that Kagu was working again!

Is that just a coincidence? I am going to try Kagu with my language-learning mp3s soon and see if it crashes again...

Outside of this one problem, Kagu runs great!

However, I have one suggestion. I have a large number of book files for The Looming Tower, a great book about Bin Laden and his pals. When I load it in Kagu, I get one file after another labled The Looming Tower, with no way to tell them apart. When I load them with the default media program on my N800, they are numbered, so I can remember that I left off on 8 The Looming Tower, rather than having to count off as I have to do with Kagu.

Great program, though!

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.6

I really enjoy this player, but have had so much frustration with it. It seems no matter how hard I try I can't get it to install properly. It seems to reside mostly with my application manager. I'm using a 770, and it has the latest firmware. When installing the 1.0.5 it starts to install, and in the last part of it gives me the error window that simply says "Kagu did not install properly" Oddly enough it still works.
Anyway the problem with the latest version is that my application manager refuses to recognize a new version actually is out. I have deleted the old version of the install file and downloaded it multiple times from the maemo webisite. Yet everytime it says I have the latest version installed. If I uninstall my old version, and click on the install file it says that its wanting to install the 1.0.5 version.

1.0.5 didn't install on 770s properly. This was fixed in 1.0.6. However, it seems like you're having maemo.org mirror problems or something as 1.0.6 isn't showing up. You could always download the .deb and install it as root via xterm with `dpkg -i ...`

Thank you very much. That's a bug and I've opened a ticket for it: https://www.guardiani.us/projects/kagu/ticket/99

I'll make sure it's fixed in the next release.

BTW, we probably won't be doing a release today. We're looking to slow down release schedules to be bi-weekly instead of weekly, so expect the next release around the 2nd. Check the roadmap for our progress: https://www.guardiani.us/projects/kagu/roadmap

Sorry, Kagu currently doesn't support internet streams in the playlist yet.

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.6

disq,
thank you for your clarifications on how to use the playlist!
it seems to me Kagu is at a point where one would need a short "user manual", explaining the icons and the various functions they fullfill depending on the context... especially if you change the behaviour of the icons from one update to the next, the userwe already using the app are a bit lost...

My wishes for 1.0.7 as a hardcore KAGU user:
- please show the playback-buttons already when you first go into an album as it was up to 1.0.4 (at the moment the playback/pause/skip buttons on the right side are not visible when you simply select an album and did not touch CD+ to create a playlist)
- fullscreen-button as in all the other MAEMO apps (on top of the N800, not the "list" button) the usual full-screen button works as Start/stop at the moment, but I did not find out until some days ago... who is using this button???

I think the "Maemo Way" is to make a short video detailing functionality. Unfortunately, I don't own a video camera. Anyone from the community would be welcome to do this for us.

Hmmm... I don't understand this request. Could you elaborate? What would the playback buttons do when nothing is in the playlist?

I use it as it's quite handy to pause/play. This is how Canola does it also, BTW. Where would you have us put pause/play if not there?

The current plan is to keep pause/play where it is and make the menu button pull up a root menu consisting of "Albums (this is the current view), Artists, Genres, All Songs" and some additional functionality like "Minimize/Maximize, Turn Off Screen"

Actually, I just finished implementing Menu, Artists, and All Songs views today. I also moved the fullscreen toggle to an OSD button in the menu and changed the hardware button to pull up the menu.

We had a lot of requests for the All Songs view. If anyone would like to beta test this functionality, please feel free to follow the instructions in the Development Snapshot section of our wiki page. It's a mostly painless process. No compiling necessary. Just follow the instructions on the wiki.

I need this too, I'm afraid that I really can't make sense out of this app. I can't get it to play a single track. I have reasonable experience of media playing apps, for example UKMP performs flawlessly but Kagu is just not at all intuitive to my particular brain hardwiring. Sorry.

Seems to run OK. I am a little puzzle by the playlist icon and how to use it, maybe the time has come for a little info on howto use it. Zoom album function is "dead on"! You have Toggle Fullscreen as part of the menu, what about making an icon for that function and putting it on the left side of the screen in line with speaker?

I findI find that a little hard to believe considering that my 5 year old doesn't have any problems getting it to play music. You put music on the n800, scan it, start kagu, tap an album, tap a song, and it plays. Maybe you could describe what you're trying to do and which part of that process is failing?

I assume you mean the CD+ icon. It's pretty simple. It adds whatever is in the current list of songs to the playlist. I might be changing the look of this icon in some places before 1.0.7 as "CD" doesn't really have any meaning from the "all songs" view (new in the upcoming release).

Yeah, I could. I could also put the (not yet coded) "turn screen off" button there. Honestly, I'm not sure what to do with that spot long term. It's a rather odd location.

I have spent more time on this now and it seems that ogg vorbis files may not be supported? I have a few mp3’s and they work exactly as you describe. Once the (mp3) tracks are being played then, with interaction with the sound, the icons start to make sense and I can figure most of them out.

Is there a fix for my ogg issues? I have installed ogg-support and, as I have said, these files play perfectly in UKMP.

But... do they play with the default Nokia player? Probably not. And that's the issue. I've mailed the OGG maintainer about this and we're not sure why OGG support doesn't work *sometimes* on the n800. It works fine on the 770. And it seems to work on the maintainer's n800. But it doesn't work on mine or yours.

BTW, this isn't a Kagu issue. It's an OGG on n800 issue. The reason why UKMP works is because UKMP uses gstreamer rather than the Nokia Media Player by default. Kagu uses the Nokia Media Player.

This is why we listed Ogg support in the change log at the beginning of this thread as "initial":

* Initial OGG support (requires ogg support in the system, upstream ogg on n800 may be broken)

I'll see if I can harass the OGG maintainer some more about this issue.

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.6

Yes you are right, my ogg files are not recognised by the default Nokia player.

I had assumed that the installation of ogg-support would ensure compatibility but not so it would appear.

Thanks for keeping up the pressure, lets hope they fix this anomaly before too long. But if the maintainer's N800 works then it is probably hard for him to know where to start.

Sorry if I gave the impression of doubting Kagu on the basis of this issue. Not so, i was taking responsibility for my being a bit thick in not grasping the interface.

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.6

trevarthan, thank you for your reply,
you asked me:

>>Hmmm... I don't understand this request. Could you elaborate? What would the playback buttons do when nothing is in the playlist?

i think they should simplay play back the song which i have selected..!!! so it should be able to play back a singel song or an album WITHOUT havin to create a playlist first! at the moment the behaviour of 1.0.6 on my N800 is the following:
- start kagu -> choose one of the albums and tap on it
- the songs of this album wre showen, but there are NO PLAYBACK buttons on the right side!!! the right side is EMPTY (i think in 1.0.4 I did have buttons at this stage)
- so I tap on CD+, I tap on the album picture (which has NOW TURNED into an PLAYLIST picture) in the lower right corner), now I can start playback

If I now change my mind and want to quickly listen to one song of another album I have to:
- go back to the album list
- choose the album
- choose the title->the title is not played back straight away (as the playlist is still playing), but it is only ADDED to the playlist
- i have to open the playlist again, scroll down, and choose my song which I want to hear

So what I think I am asking for is: do not automatically play back only from the playlist, but if I open kagu fresh and select an album and one song inside this, please just give me the playback buttons so I can play bacl straight away. However, I do understand that it would be necessary to differentiate if someone wants to ADD one song to the playlist, or if he/she just wants to play back the current selection.

Maybe if I get used to the playlist idea would be the most easy..--)))
And Yes, the START/STOP on the enlarge button also has something to it, I have to admit....

sorry for the long post, those functions are very easy to SHOW on the N800, but vey hard to describe in words..

Thank you again, karl.

Or, you could clear the playlist, then go searching for the new song. Then it will play immediately when you select it. Would save you scrolling in the playlist.

In a nutshell, you want the old 1.0.4 behavior back. No playlist. No enqueue. Hmmm....

There are a number of ways to solve this.

a.) We could have a button in the new menu view that turns off enqueue mode.
b.) We could have a button in the new menu view that changes enqueue mode behavior so that selecting a song plays it immediately after adding it to the playlist.

There are others, but I think those are the easiest. b.) would be particularly easy, I think. Does that sound reasonable? Any other ideas from anyone? disq?

trevarthan,

thank you for reading my long post, i know you have a lot do do...

yes, solution B) would be enough (adding to playlist and jump to it immediately).

BUT: if its only me who is whining, please just ignore it...--))) there are so many other interseting features on your roadmap....

best regards, karl.

Re: Kagu Media Player Released 1.0.6

I finally have the 1.0.6 installed and working. I just installed the "broken" version of 1.0.5 and clicked update, and it updated through that with no problem. I'm going to look into the maemo mirrors problem. Thanks again for this wonderful app.

Hi, I checked the status of the tickets for 1.7 and it shows that a lot of progress have been made. Thx again for all your work. Have you got an ETA for the next release by any chance?

I finished up the release yesterday, but unfortunately our usual release guy isn't available right now, so I'm having to apply for an upload account to the "extras" repository. I've heard from other developers that it can take a while.

I'll make a formal release announcement once 1.0.7 is available from maemo.org. But for now, anyone interested can download the official 1.0.7 release from the garage page here. Here's the changelog for 1.0.7:

* Added Artists and All Songs views
* ScrollWidget now support really really really long lists
* Improved Album Art view (default to 300*X now)
* Plenty of bugfixes
