Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
There are several Jollas available at Finnish eBay-like on-line auction site huuto.net
http://www.huuto.net/hakutulos/categ...ng?words=jolla The problem is that the only viable form of payment would be an IBAN bank transfer to the seller and then the buyer had to trust the seller to send the phone to the buyer through FedEx or another courier. |

I went to account.jolla.com and changed my address to my parents' address; they are based in the EU. However, same problem as Schturman; I can't figure out how to order using my pre-order number, and I can't use my account.jolla.com login in the store. Maybe I'm too late, or maybe I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas please? |
Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
I don't see it getting released in the US as absolutely crucial. Also they really got their hands full right now and will probably still have their hands full for the next 6 months. They better start hiring more and fill that building up!
CEO already stated they would put the sailfish image targeted for various Android devices for download on websites in China and figure out a revenue model from there, like take a cut on the site revenue or something and make sure it works on each device. Once they do that XDA will have it and it will be here and what do you think will happen then? I see sailfish as Mr Smith from the matrix, your phone becomes our phone. http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...pse368cdce.gif I know that's ^ not a appropriate/good PR image for Sailfish OS but don't hate, I'm just an end user If Jolla can have it set up so that non Jolla hardware running Sailfish when accessing Jolla store can buy Myriad license for 20 bucks or something like that then it will spread very fast like agent smith. I'm pretty sure my HTC One will be one of the first ones to get it. It would be slick if they can make Dalvik use the buttons on the front of the phone when using Android apps instead of making another set of them on the screen. In the long run QT is now cross platform for IOS and Android so the apps issue will sort itself out later. |

Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
I no longer care about Jolla ships or not... no 3G/LTE for US = no use for me. Luckily I have Z10 as a stop-gap daily phone.
I will wait a few more months and see if Jolla announce firm plan or not. Still want to support them, but if they don't improve their communication I see troubles ahead. Jolla can get away with us, but not average Joe.... |

I tweeted JollaHQ during the first half of November - and they suggested that I mail care@jolla.com to change my shipping address - which I did. But I dunno - suspect they're really busy now - trying to service everyone's requests? |
Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
I live in Lebanon, and I changed my address to Sweden. I got the invitation e-mail on Dec. 11 & paid. But now you can only rely on ordering. No more pre-orders.
|
Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
Same here.. I didn't wait for invitation anymore, just purchased from the shop to the address of my friend from Switzerland. Paid completed via paypal and now Order status is "Payment Review" almost a week and they not answering to my mails/requests about what happens.. :(

We've become a marketing group that wants the George Jetson lifestyle - one button that does everything. I know that sounds like I'm talking in absolutes, but I've never been more disappointed in the North American market - the people, the companies, the offerings and the carriers - then ever before. Jolla probably would have an uphill battle for what would be a smaller market than the EU. In fact, besides the very few N9 fans, the core fans in the NA market that would buy a Jolla phone might be too small for an expedited release and without any carrier advertising. That would mean actual advertising - a grass roots advertising campaign in the US might not take. I wish them luck, but the North American market is just plain too weird and small to consider it a game changer at this moment. (45) |

But since you've paid already I don't see where you should worry. :D |
Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
I'll explain..
When I decided to purchase, I needed to register on shop.jolla.com, but their site not have Israel in the country list (Name & Address = Billing Address) and I should insert the direct address of my friend in Swiss. Another mistake is when I wrote my name instead of my friend. When I completed payment I saw in the order status “Suspected Fraud”, probably because of I wrote address of my friend in the Name & Address = Billing Address form. I wrote mail to jolla, but no answers... After two days the order status changed to "Payment Review" , I wrote mail again and again no answers... From yesterdays I saw on my bank account that money is transferred from my account... Hope they will answer me soon... |

Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
NA market isn't small. At least it won't be any smaller than some markets in Europe. Size doesn't scare Jolla I think. It's the legal landscape that worries them. Entering US means preparing to fight patent trolls, privateers, racketeers like M$, Apple and the rest. It might be doable, but it's also risky. I hope this won't prevent Jolla from doing it though, and it won't take them years to start.
|
Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
The legal issues are implicit. But will it be worth it to Jolla? One doesn't simply launch a phone in the US without FCC approval, the different GSM frequencies than the rest of the world and without advertising or some generated buzz - ZTE's eBay release of the FirefoxOS phone is a possible counter-example though - you're just also selling an item on Amazon or your website and people in the know would be your only clientele.
And folks in the NA market just don't know Jolla. Not yet. In the end, after the legal hurdles, the different hardware, the weird carrier situation and the even weirder population that's spoon fed from either Engadget, Gizmodo or QVC - is it worth it? I say thee, nay. All my opinion. But the North American market is just an unenlightened one from my marketing experience. And the enlightened is just too small of a group. The challenge lays there. Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
Legal issues aside, and let's say they pass the FCC approval, what do they lose by offering the device for the NA market? They lose nothing, and they gain users. Buzz and etc. isn't their focus now even in Europe. Jolla's marketing is pretty minimal everywhere. I.e. they already are selling only for "those who know". They still have enough demand for their level of production now, so entering US won't make it any worse (IMHO people in Europe don't know Jolla any more than in US - i.e. those who know - know already, others have no clue). But legal problems are the real roadblock.

Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
As I have stated before, NA market was the thing that finally destroyed the mobile devices business of Nokia, so it is not entirely without a risk to covet that market.
|
Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
Nokia can't be compared, because they tried to be Apple 2 instead of steadily making good products. And they failed in their ambitions and wasted all their efforts. Jolla is nothing the like, they don't care to waste resources on being Apple 2 and they unlike Nokia are focused.

Concentrating on the NA market would mean support for a different chipset and consumer (costs), development of a device outside of their home territory and distribution in that territory (costs) and handling of RMA's and returns in that territory (costs). There are other costs, advertising, marketing, placement, et al - some are necessary, some may not be - and the costs therein of personnel, training, offices, communication, shipment, stocking, development, returns, replacement, so forth... and that's all before the legal research, licensing, protection against aforesaid legal problems, grey areas and patent trolls... it all adds up to "is it worth it?" real quick. I'm of the impression that until either the market changes in NA or if they've already devised a plan (which might be the case and we're discussing a moot point) - I'd just say my opinion. You have some great points. Let's see how it plays out. In the selfish, self-applying agenda that I might carry, I hope that I am wrong. (43) |

I don't think it is crucial for them to release it here. They don't need to release it here. We will just get the Sailfish OS from China that they release for various Android phones like they said they will do and we will support it as a community. |
Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders

I care about that. But I don't see the NA market as being even "crucial" (denotation, not connotation) to Jolla's releases. Nor is it a a litigious situation. So in that area, we agree. It's the overzealous that I disagree with that state "It comes out in the US or it'll fail" types. Not painting you as that - but understand that's what I had dealt with (see above). It's doubtful I'd go the China route. If released to other EU countries that I might visit and/or supports my GSM/LTE bands here in the US, I'll get it that way. Or I'll install Sailfish OS over my pending Android purchase. But NA isn't crucial - yes. We agree there - sans overzealous overtones. (43) |
Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
It's not crucial, but Jolla should pay attention to their users in US. From that perspective I care about it, since I can't use the device personally until it's compatible with local networks. I hope their next version will have a universal modem, and artificial network restrictions won't prevent using it anywhere you want to. The question is, how long will it take them to produce it? A year, or more?

I still admire Jolla for what they're attempting to do with Sailfish, but I no longer want Jolla hardware, especially if the rumours of "only 2G in NA" are true. My ardour for Jolla has fallen off so much that I can't even be bothered to verify if that's true. My preorder is vapourised (did it ever exist?), and the warm fuzzy feeling I harboured for Jolla for so long is gone. For now, I will cling to my N9 in the hopes that it continues to make me happy, and see what happens next. Perhaps Sailfish on Nexus, or perhaps Sailfish on N9 (if it matures enough). Perhaps I just keep buying ever-scarcer N9s... ...or perhaps I give up on everything I've believed in and just do Android-on-Nexus-5. After all, my colleagues show me their phones running blazing fast and it's impressive. |

If it's the €40 T-shirt thing, then I stand by that; they took my money and then gave me a receipt for something which they didn't then make available to me. If the only way to avoid this situation was to read every TMO thread (including some which may not have been written at the time I put in my pre-order) then I'd say it's hardly surprising that some people ended up disappointed. I know you are a major contributor and I have a lot of respect for all you've done for the community, but surely you don't really expect me to dig through hundreds of pages of threads just so I can figure out precisely how I'm wrong? I'm guessing the thing I'm wrong about is one or more of: the radio-compatibility thing, the pre-order thing or possibly something else... ...but this isn't the first nor the last time I've been wrong about something, nor is it the first or last time I'll weather a small disappointment about technology. I don't have anything new to add, and neither does Jolla, so today is the day I'm over it. Surely it isn't difficult to understand that after a period of getting excited about phones again it was a disappointment...? Really though - no more gloomy posts about this, I promise. I'm done. Life goes on :) |
Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
I'm not a major contributor, never have been really, certainly not for a long time & esp. lately.
I'm sorry but I don't have time to find the info. that explains it all to you... But I do know that what you're asserting* isn't right, perhaps some others here can help. Maybe post in one of the more active threads, I do hope someone lays it all out for you. All the best. *I highlighted it in my last response to you |

However, as I said - life goes on, and I'm done feeling negative about this whole Jolla thing. Since I'm not planning to get involved as a Jolla consumer any more, I'm not too worried about being wrong about anything related to this, so don't worry if it's not convenient for you to explain yourself at greater length. As I said in my previous post, I've decided that I don't need a Jolla phone right now; I'm not sure what I'll get for my next device, but my life has changed a lot in the last few years and my priorities are different these days. I'm OK carrying a 2.5-year-old device and knowing that something newer and [possibly] better is out there. As for TMO, I do think you were a major contributor, at least when I was here, in terms of gathering information about the N9 and so on around launch time; this was when such information was scarce and many rumours were flying around. I remember those days with a smile and I give you big credit for that! :) |

Re: Waiting room for non-EU pre-orders
Well, perhaps I am guilty of having seen what I wanted to see. I think Jolla could have handled this whole process a lot better, but then it was the first time they were doing it.
This is absolutely the last thing I will write on this topic anywhere on TMO. |
