Re: [WIP] SailfishOS on Nexus 5
Sincerely hope the internal work that's obviously been done at Jolla on SF 2.0 builds on the Nexus 5 is released into the wild or contributed to existing efforts.
Leaving aside arguments about what's missing / bad / counter-intuitive about the updated UI, the demos on the Nexus 5 are in my view the first time Sailfish has looked good. It's certainly a rather better device to demo to partners than the Jolla Phone, and I assume this is why they've rekindled in-house work. |
Re: [WIP] SailfishOS on Nexus 5
It looks like the camera is finally functional! Alpha 9 has just been released. I probably won't have time to flash this until this weekend. Here is the link in case someone would like to try it out.

Re: [Alpha9] SailfishOS on Nexus 5 (now with working camera, sensors ...)
Hi all,
I just installed alpha9 and since the first release I have the issue that I can't connect to the mobile data. When I try to activate it, it only says connection issues and that is it. I've searched for a solution on the XDA forums but since I'm not a developer my user is limited and cannot post directly on the forum. Anyone here could help me to find a solution (this is the only thing that keeps me going back to android on the nexus) |

still not completely ready for prime time, atleast for me, camera is still a bit laggy. I wonder if 2.0 will be further improved.

I posted some relatively detailed first impressions, having just received my N5.

ive taken the plunge, after optimizations itd be goood. I dont really seem to need any of the android apps so thats alright.
battery life drops off quickly for me. but who knows why that is, could just be my usage. anyone know how i can music play? ive tried installing hte mp3 codec but no luck. the gstreamer is missing the plugin :( ah missed the gstreamer1.0-libav comment. music does indeed work,it randomly lags but we'll just wait and see. i plan to make this my daily driver now thanks for all the hard work Quote:

My "the first one" starts to wear down. Some problems with the screen and I don't want to send it to service but I try to keep it functional and save it because I want that it really is "the first one"... Therefor I would need new phone... Don't want to buy current jolla hw again. Just to get some new project I decided to buy hw faulty N5 which I think I can get to work. If I get it working I would like start using it as a daily drivers and give some feedback and wait for Jolla to get new phone to us. Its shame that there is no better HW Jolla phone available. |
Re: [Alpha9] SailfishOS on Nexus 5 (now with working camera, sensors ...)
I've added a couple more impressions of the device, and some more substantial thoughts on performance (including benchmarks). As I've always thought, and as many in the community have strenuously denied, Sailfish has some real performance issues.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=383 @m4r0v3r - i prefer mitakuuluu to whatsup. if you like whatsup, try it out on the N5. @KylliOrvokki - thanks. N5 is a good choice if you want to stick with SF and are fairly tolerant of problems (you must be if you've stuck with SF / Jolla this long). bear in mind that it would be optimistic to expect Jolla to port Alien Dalvik to all of Sailfish in the next 6 months (or by year's end). it's also pretty good if you don't mind using Android. though maybe you want to buy a case for your First One and buy the successor(s) to the N5 and N6 (probably LG G4 / Huawei Honour P8 derivative) later in the year. |
Re: [Alpha9] SailfishOS on Nexus 5 (now with working camera, sensors ...)
Could it be that the UI isn't HW accelerated on N5?

10 chars yet according to lighthouse all 4 cores are chilling. but i assume there is literally no acceleration which means everything goes through the cpu also the music stutters a lot, I assume thats because the DSP isn't involved? |
Re: [Alpha9] SailfishOS on Nexus 5 (now with working camera, sensors ...)
That might help explain why there's no discernable difference in performance with the N5 in every day use over the JP in Sailfish ... however it doesn't explain the massive performance overhead that both the JP and N5 suffer from in cpu bound tasks in Sailfish, and that the JP doesn't when using Alien Dalvik.
Re: monitoring core activity. I've tried, but there's not much useful info that you can discern. First of all we only have Lighthouse that's really reliable, and it doesn't provide a graphing feature or the ability to dynamically measure core clocks (or at all). I miss Conky on the N900 so much :( Also, I'm not convinced it's very accurate on the N5. Furthermore, the most interesting thing would be to see if the CPU on the JP is being fully loaded when I run the benches in Firefox in Alien Dalvik (suspect it's getting nuked at full clocks) ... but I can't as the app suspends as soon it's no longer focused, for all Alien Dalvik apps. For what it's worth, Sailfish seems to struggle to load the cores even in the pretty aggressive Octane benchmark, for the JP, seems also to be the same for the N5 (but I don't really trust Lighthouse to be accurate as it isn't tuned to the N5). |

Re: [Alpha9] SailfishOS on Nexus 5 (now with working camera, sensors ...)
I don't see what SFOS "2.0" has to do with this. It's a collection of updated features, UI paradigms and refined animations. Jolla have never hinted that it will be faster or more optimised, or remove the crippling bottlenecks that the OS currently suffers from.
Edit: I updated the XDA post again, this time with Ubuntu Phone (on N5) results. UP & SF share Qt, QML, C++, libhybris and are both 'real' linux, so I think it's a good comparison. Problem doesn't seem to lie with hybris as UP has stellar performance. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=383 |

Re: [Alpha9] SailfishOS on Nexus 5 (now with working camera, sensors ...)
If you read my posts, the Jolla Phone is suffering in exactly the same way as the Nexus 5. It's not confined to community ports. Also, I think a lot of that was due to better animations and screen transitions. A few of them are updated in the EA release that went out 10 days ago. On the face of it, it looks a lot better.

Re: [Alpha9] SailfishOS on Nexus 5 (now with working camera, sensors ...)
It's not an illusion. It IS very slow ... and Alien Dalvik running inside Sailfish is much faster (similar speed to how quick it'd be in Android). I get the feeling the task scheduler might be completely borked in Sailfish, and AD bypasses it entirely ... or something like that.

How are handled android background application by the OOM handler?
I read "no greetings from OOM handler", does this mean we can use app like telegram or whatsapp in background? I know, why install sailfish on an android device to use android apps? I like Sailfish UI :) EDIT: I'm sorry, I think I just find out that Android app support is not available |

Jolla Store fixed.

In IRC someone said warehouse works after installing an app from store.
From porters faq link it says: Either run devel-su pkcon refresh in terminal, or download at least one app from Jolla Store |

Re: SailfishOS on Nexus 5
Finally I decided to give it a try on my old Nexus 5.
Flashing was pretty straight forward. It looks very good. I will take it for a ride for the next few days as my daily driver. Only app I miss is the Waze. It is ok, I am in town this week, so no need for nav. Few issues (after few hours usage): 1. Copied ~/.local/share/commhistory folder from my Jolla - because only thing local that I really need is my sms and call log. 2. 3. 4G connection issues for data (USA T-Mobile). 3G seems to work good. 4. Default fonts in Terminal and a few non Jolla apps like Whatsup is really small. Whatsup, currently no option to update, I can play with the qml, maybe later, or wait for CepiPerez to come up with the right fix. 5. Double tap to wake up the screen does not work (even after mcetool --set-low-power-mode=enabled) Update: It works from LPM screen. 6. Phone audio seems to be too low. 7. Need to get used to Volume buttons on the left again. Hung up couple times trying to increase volume and pressing lock button instead. No show stoppers yet for me. I love this bigger and better screen. I can even see the screen in daylight outside. |
Re: SailfishOS on Nexus 5
One more important issue:
8. Flash for the camera does not seem to work. Torch app does not turn on the flash either |
Re: SailfishOS on Nexus 5
the double tap to wake up only works when the LPM screen is active.
