Sailfish UI is closed. Glacier UI (WIP) is the UI of nemo

Ok, I should probably do a bit more studying before I ask this question (as I would imagine it is already answered elsewhere), but what is the preferred target device right now for someone wanting to run Mer / Nemo? (Perhaps the Nexus 5?)

Everyone here talking about opensource and really open project with TMO as important reference point...but on the other side, so much little interest about NEMO mobile thread. I really would like to know why you act in this way, please reply to me in that thread since i am feeling mind-fractured. just cant afford why call for a homemade cake and then no one is interested to contribute in his way in the process of cooking it.
I think the main difference is that in case of Maemo (and Sailfish OS) you have something that works and is actually day to day usable in most cases and with some rough edges here and there.

Basically, people are much more likely to help improve something that they can actually use, rather than something that while being completely open needs a substantial amount of work to get even remotely usable.

That (to reiterate for probably the hundredth time...) I think it was a big mistake not to make Sailfish OS fully open source (minus any third party licensed code of course) - it would get the Nemo mobile a working baseline (even if it had to replace Jollas trademarks, themes, etc.) on which it could then build its own specific initiatives, such as the Glacier UI.

And I'm sure it would also benefit Sailfish OS as many of the changes made by Nemo based contributors would be directly usable by Sailfish OS, it would also definitely help the reputation in the open source community and overall you want as many people as possible to use even your pre release software to spot possible bugs as early as possible.

I still hope that the possible dual licensing deal proposed by Stskeeps on the latest community meeting(described ~ in the middle of the article) comes through - even though it is certainly not something easy to do given the current situation.

Still, if the open sourcing can be done, the scenario described above might still happen at last.

Re: NEMO MOBILE, why such a little interest from sailors?

well i can understand . and thanks for you reply. however i think that, even if there is a lot of work to do, great things could be done on it. i am not a dev so i ask forgiven, but it seems working (for basic function)

PS: someone (JOLLA) invested money and efforts to make something usable, so I find really bad this approach to things. it sounds like, let them make the hardest work and then we can join and use it,contributing.

Re: NEMO MOBILE, why such a little interest from sailors?

The trouble with Glacier is that none of the people who envisioned it (including myself) had ever any free time to actually implement their vision.

Personally, I regret not spending more time on Nemo, but to be honest, I had (and still have) a lot of stuff going on in my life. I haven't given up on eventually rejoining ― but realized just now that by that time it might be too late. :(

Too late, in terms of there being something better available? I'd be interested to hear what that would be; I was personally expecting Sailfish to be my nearly-open mobile Linux OS for the future, but it looks like that's not gonna happen. I'm not really big on going Android, but right now, that's all I'm seeing that would be anything close, other than Mer / Nemo...

and Venemo since you are a developer, with an hypotetically adeguate revenue from donations for developing it, would you be more on the track?
I understand there could be a lot of things in life that are so much more important, but i want to ask if it is a (absolutely reasonable) matter of " i have to spend my time working, cause i have to mantein my projects and family" or just "i have more interesting things to do". i ask you this without any bad intention, really want to know if with donations really things could change. i am perfectly in agreement with paying for a service or work of someone else.

Back in 2012-2013 I had a stable job and a lot of free time. These days I study at university and while at it I try to work on some projects to get some revenue until I get my degree.

So I guess that the answer to your question might be yes. If I didn't have to worry about finances, I could devote more time to things I'm interested in (instead of things that are not interesting but are done for the money).

EDIT: no promises though, it's gonna be pretty tough to get through my studies, so I haven't a clue about whether I would be able to contribute in a meaningful way until I finish.

Re: NEMO MOBILE, why such a little interest from sailors?

well that's a starting point. if we were able to collect enought fund, we likely would have faster improvements. a dev free to code what he like without dealing with to-survive works, would be much more involved, focused, stimulated both to doing more just to earn money and being appreciated. just like artist in the past: he had to make great things, being supported economically by lords of courts, without thinking to mantein themselves...its not a surprise that period gave us some of awesome art's pieces

Hey all,

The adaptation work done in Sailfish is applicable to Nemo Mobile as well. For example, the Fairphone 2 and Puzzlephone will have _community_ adaptation coming forth. So its basically independed of Jolla as a company. Same goes with Raspberry Pi 2, heck, you can build your own phone, but with free software, on top of non-free hardware at this case.

https://sailpi.wordpress.com/article...tphone-part-1/

See above for example.

Thanks locusf!
So, as i understood, it is 100% sure, that the Sailfish community port will run on the fairphone 2 / puzzlephone.
Thinking about to buy a fairphone, but without sailfish, it just one good, but expensive android phone....

I just wanted to say that I would be interested in joining the effort. I've been trying to figure out whether the nemo project was still alive at all for a while now but without much success.

Finally having a proper, free OS for my N9 would be brilliant and certainly a cause worth contributing to.

I do develop software in real life, yes. Unfortunately I just read in another thread that the N9 is no longer supported.

no, i read in that thread but they was referring to n900

Re: NEMO MOBILE, why such a little interest from sailors?

True, but the issue seems to be the graphics driver and AFAIK the N9 and the N900 use the same graphics chip.

Anyway, I'll check whether I can get this to run at all on my N9 before I sign up :)

Sure, but you can hold on n9 forever..why dont switch to a more recent device? you would have an open source os, but with better hardware.

cockroach 2015-11-29 15:07

Re: NEMO MOBILE, why such a little interest from sailors?

Is there a particular phone that you would recommend for Nemo? I quite like the N9, it's nice and small and has a great screen. Most other phones are way too large for my tast.

Plus there's the thing where I prefer using devices that I own to just throwing them away. Good, well-documented and open hardware on the other hand might make me reconsider. :)

itdoesntmatt 2015-11-29 15:11

Re: NEMO MOBILE, why such a little interest from sailors?

maybe you should consider puzzlephone (wich i have preordered) or nexus5.. 5 inches, but thats fine for me. 5 is ideal dimension.

cockroach 2015-11-29 15:22

Re: NEMO MOBILE, why such a little interest from sailors?

Hmm I don't think so, I know the Nexus 5 is too large for me and the other one is about the same size.

Nokia N900 is possibly the most open currently?
http://elinux.org/N900

yes, it has very little RAM, but many have run Debian/Arch, etc. without hassle on it. I'd like to think it would also be a good candidate for Nemo

Z3 Compact, not mini. I've a Z1 Compact which is almost identical and there's been some activity on a Sailfish port to that also. The Compact Sony phones are probably as close as you can get to N9 size but still properly powerful unlike Samsung and HTC 'Mini' models which are often a lot more cut down than the non-mini models.

Re: NEMO MOBILE, why such a little interest from sailors?

A hardware question: I've been looking at prices for the Nexus 5, and noticed that the Nexus 7 is quite a bit less expensive (and the 2012 model appears to be supported by Nemo to some extent). So, would there be any significant disadvantage to using the Nexus 7 to hack on Nemo? Thanks!

itdoesntmatt 2015-12-07 18:03

Re: NEMO MOBILE, why such a little interest from sailors?

but nexus 7 is only a tablet, different from a phone...

in the meanwhile i leave this links:
the Ui showed on the second link is simply amazing.

yeah i confused name but i know that is the only brand of wich, mini/compact series has got the same hardware, apart the display of different size of course.

Well, yeah, but I already have lots of phones. :) I don't have a tablet, so this would let me play around in that world a little. And anyway, I still think it'd be easier to target the tablet market with alternative operating systems than the phone market... :)

Definitely! Maybe that's even the way forward. For somone who comes after Jolla, that is. Make a usable Linux tablet (with a strong emphasis on the word usable) and maybe (with a strong emphasis on the word maybe) move on to phones once that foot is firmly in the door.

Ok, cool; so, perhaps we should enumerate exactly what a tablet requires to be truly "usable". (And yeah, as I've never before used a tablet myself, I'm going to have to learn what this would take.) I would imagine that it'd be nice to start by using concepts from Maemo, Meego, Nemo, and Sailfish; at least, that's probably where I would begin.

Maybe this needs a new thread? I think I'm diverging quite a bit from the original intent of this thread now... :)

You know what, that actually sounds like a really intriguing proposition. But I am not sure I am really the most inventive UI designer in the universe. I would never come up with a swipe interface, for example. OTOH, I might be not too bad at spotting faults and suggesting improvements ;)

You are, I am sure, light-years ahead of me. :) I have, as I may have mentioned before, no artistic ability to speak of. And, I'm most comfortable interacting with a computer via a command line...

But yeah, let me go ahead and start up another thread for this topic.

So all we need do is the opposite of what a command line junkie and an uninventive UI designer want. Sorted. ;)

If that's what you want, go for it man! :)

Myself, I see the command-line-junkie market as thoroughly untapped. Makes for a great place to get a foothold, and expand into other areas... ;)

seems that Jaakko Roppola (ex sailfish UX designer, one of the most important men of silica design) wants to help building Nemo Mobile's GlacierUI. This is an amazing news!

If you want to contribute offering a beer to devs (not me, since i am not one). but do want to use Paypal or Bitcoin, instead of classic bank way.. i have created a paypal account, after talking with locusf. i will transfer all donations to official bank account, since i am in europe and could be easier once we will collect enought. (of course i will give you updated screenshots of balance of paypal account, for transparency)

paypal address is nemomobile@libero.it

when i will manage to understand how bitcoin system works i will give a bitcoin address for ones who want contribute in that way
