Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
hey I am curious if anyone has tried to run aircrack-ng on the debian side running a usb prisim2 wifi card ???? also would this even possible ...... still kinda new to the penguin but know quite a bit:D
|
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
I think it is possible. You need to insmod the prism2 driver in Maemo before starting Easy Debian, but it should work from there.

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
hi qole,
i just installed kchmviewer in easy debian. i need to use debian chroot to run it. is there any way that i can run it without opening chroot. i tried using personal menu using command debbie kchmviewer (like other packages) and got a pop up window with error message. DCOP communications error (kchmviewer) Thwere was an error setting up inter-process communications for KDE. The message... Could not read network connection list. /home/user/.DCOPserver_Nokia-N800-__0 Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running! OK then after i pressed OK kchmviewer will be loaded and a pop up window this error message will appear Sorry - kchmview... Could not find mime type application/octet-stream OK Then after pressed OK another error message appear but this time in the content area An error opccured while loading ms-its:/media/mmc1/Documents/chm/OXHCM.CHM::/8 - Renal MEdicine.htm: Could not start process Unable to create io-slave: Permission denied. BUT... I received no error message if i run kchmviewer through debian chroot. |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
asyik: It looks like you've run kchmviewer as root (from the Debian Chroot window) and now some of the permissions have been set to root, and you can't run it as "user" anymore.
First, you need to open a terminal and type: Code:
sudo chown user:users /home/user/.DCOPserver* Then, reboot the tablet (to clear out the temp directory) and try to run "debbie kchmviewer" again. |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
qole...
I entered this Quote:
Code:
chown: cannot access `/home/user/.DCOPserver*': No such file or directory Code:
ls /home/user -la Code:
total 912 so what is the next move (i do not know how to change the permission) i also have xchm and listed as root but i can run it as a user using debbie xchm via personal menu. This is what i got if i run debbie kchmviewer in x terminal Code:
BusyBox v1.6.1 (2008-09-18 09:43:17 EEST) Built-in shell (ash) |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
asyik: Wow, you have a lot of root files in your home directory. The best thing to do is the following:
Code:
sudo chown user:users -R /home/user Here are the files in your home directory owned by root: Quote:

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
hey qole thank so much is great,
I had manage to install it and as well to install inkscape, i was just wondering if there is any way i could get inkscape in the maemo menu like gimp and the other staff, Thanks again looking forward for your replay Xavier |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Xavier: Install Personal Menu and then add an icon for the command, "debbie inkscape".

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Hey Qole first off thanks for the great app/OS I was trying to use the synaptic packager to remove a few things from within debian and I was asked for a root pass word ??? is there any way to get this info or maybe change it ?
Thanks again John |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
In LXDE, run Synaptic from the command line with "sudo", or better yet, run Synaptic from the Maemo menu icon.
|
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
also I was wondering is there a website you could point me to so that I can try to insmod my airdash wifi card .... this is a tad more advanced than what I was thinking. but would really like to have a small wardriving device that is able to send packets... since my main transportation atm has only 2 wheels the smaller the better ..... and I dont see toting my MBP in a backpack just to get ruined by the rain O_o
N800 + zip lock baggy = rain proof !!!! |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
sweet ..... the sudo synaptic command worked like a charm !!!!!

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Some searching only found a post from a guy who said he'd have to compile a prism2 driver himself...
I think you're going to have to do like me, and track down an rt73-based usb wifi card. Then you can use the drivers from this thread. Another note about wifi sticks. I've found that my N800 can't power it alone, I needed to use a battery pack and a powered USB hub. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3136/...848fd1b9_m.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3038/...2ae73312_m.jpg |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
how hard would it be to compile a driver for the airdash ??
being that its gonna run through debian I was thinking it would have been a little easier work around. |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
I'm sure it's been mentioned before somewhere within this 18 septendecillion topic, but where can I search for free debian programs to install and run within OS?
Also, are there any programs that are actually worth paying for? Thanks! |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
You can use Synaptic Package Manager (in your Maemo menu) to browse the Debian repositories. You will need to choose "Reload Package Information" from the Edit menu to get the latest list of apps and packages.
And the whole concept of Debian is Free, as in freedom and as in beer. There's no "Debian App Store" ;) |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Okay! Good to know!
And beer isn't free here in the states. Otherwise I wouldn't have to allot $150.00 from my monthly budget for it. *lol* If it's free in Canada, care for a roomie? I promise not to try and flush your curtains down the toilet during a drunken episode. :) |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
If I run xfontsel from the Debian chroot cmd prompt, it says that only
4 fonts are installed. If I run it inside LXDE, then I have all the usual suspects. I'm guessing that's because the font's are not being seen by Maemos Xserver. Does anyone know where to put them / how to add them so that they are seen by the 'internal' Xserver. I ran across that whilst playing with the USB mouse drivers from another thread. It seems that LXDE and the Xserver that qole is using have been hardcoded (not by him, I understand) only to accept input from /dev/event[0-2]). Using the USB mouse drivers with them gives some nasty letter droppings (q's if I recall). However, if you start your favorite app from the debian chroot command prompt (after su user...) then you are using the maemo X server, and the mouse drivers work perfectly (middle mouse clicks for Xemacs!). If I understand some of the other topics in this thread correctly, I might also be able to 'debbie' them, but I haven't tried yet. But, fonts are missing. :( I think (but am not sure) that this might be related to some nasty flickering on boxes, but it might also be related to something else I have to check into with the Xaw libs. It also tends to peg the processor... But, it's Xemacs on my 810! I've tried a few ideas thus far, but no joy in the fonts. Any ideas? Thanks P.S. Thanks again qole! P.P.S. When you are playing around with adding and moving X fonts on your maemo partition. Don't accidentally delete /usr/share/X11 on an N810. It's not fun. Trust me. |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
How do I uninstall completly this debian?

I have a question for others, I am not sure if this issue is related to installing/uninstalling multiple times easy debian and mer, I found that the total usable size of my 8GB SD card has been reduced considerably, it now only holds about 6 Gigs... Is there a way to gain that storage back without having to format the card? What would cause that? |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Quote:
If the first number (the amount of storage available) is close to 8G, then you just have a really big file there. Did you maybe forget to delete the imgfile once you expanded it out (assuming you did so). It's about 2G. Otherwise, try popping the card and running gparted on it from a Linux box. It will tell you the partition sizes and location pretty easily. You can also do the resize if you have somehow 'lost' part of the card. Note: if you don't have Linux, grab vmware player and an ubuntu machine and do it that way. |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
I have heard that the "lost space" problem can happen if you deleted the image file and you hadn't closed your Debian chroot. I always recommend people to reboot their tablets before deleting the image file.
Reboot your tablet, gain root, and then do the following: Code:
fsck.msdos /dev/mmcblk0p1 |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Hi qole,
am absolutely amazed by what you've done! This is a wonderful addition to the Internet Tablet. I bought my NIT mainly to tinker around, and with your debian distribution, it definitely does not disappoint - thanks a tonne! I'm pretty new to linux but am slowly becoming a fan... I've actually also become something of a fan of dillo, a super-lightweight web browser. While I haven't found an ARM-compatible version of the latest edition (2.something), the old 0.8.6 is pretty amazing in terms of speed - it's the fastest I've ever seen. Of course, this comes at a price: Neither Javascript, nor CSS (though the latest one does that) let alone flash are supported. However, for pages like Wikipedia, BBC News and most everything that mainly relies on images and text, it is perfect - and it does tabbed browsing, too. Try it yourself - I promise you'll be blown away by the speed... Anyway, I also have a question: As the new version of liferea apparently syncs with google reader, I am extremely interested in it. I've also found a package of it for ARM, including one on the debian page (somewhere in the sid repositories), but have spent much of today failing to install it :D . The thing is, the deb-package I have moans about missing packages and does not appear to be able to get them itself (also, the ones on the repository - I tried to install some of them manually - seem to be older than the requirements). The version I get via apt-get/synaptic is the older 1.4, which does not yet support google reader sync. :( I'm also a bit confused because my sources.list does appear to contain the sid repository - which should include the latest version - and I have also tried updating my repositories - all to no avail (though it did say something about a failed hash-check on sid?)... Is there a newer repository for sid-packages? Or is there some other way I can install liferea 1.6? Thanks a million in advance, Martin |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
noctilux:
I just checked my debian-squeeze image file (that's the current one), and /etc/apt/sources.list has all the entries for sid. Perhaps you need to do an apt-get update? But it sounds as if you're doing that, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Perhaps try an apt-get -f install to see if you can get to a good, stable place, make sure you're online, do an apt-get update, and then try reinstalling the packages you're interested in. |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
hi qole, I want to question you how do I remove unwanted software (like Firefox and Epiphany), if I uninstall it via terminal or synaptic manager, the icons remains in maemo!!! How to remove them???
|
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Anyone knows if there's a way to simulate a right-click in turbo easy debian? I'm trying to use lmms and I need to right-click to show the contextual menu.
Thank you! |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
pinguino89: The icons are harmless, and they really aren't meant to be removed. But they can be removed by deleting the corresponding .desktop files, as root, from the /usr/share/applications/hildon directory.
mordark: right click can be simulated by a tap-and-hold in GTK apps. It doesn't appear that lmms is such an app, so I don't know what you can do. |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
After understanding how the "set debian hw keys" script works, I've edited the /home/user/.xbindkeysrc.scm file to add these lines :
; Fullscreen key (Left) (xbindkey-function 'Left (lambda () (run-command "xmodmap -e 'pointer = 1 2 3'") (reset-first-binding))) ; Fullscreen key (Right) (xbindkey-function 'Right (lambda () (run-command "xmodmap -e 'pointer = 3 2 1'") (reset-first-binding))) Now I can toggle right-click and left-click with minus+right and minus+left :) |
Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
mordark: Thank you for posting your solution!

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
I'm happy to contribute, turbo easy debian is just so useful! :)
It turns the tablet into a complete pocket PC. |

qole, what's the status of easy debian in maemo 5/ fremantle

Re: [Debian] ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
I have easy-chroot in Fremantle Extras-Devel, but I'm not sure where to go from here. The size of the N900's screen and the messy implementation of standard GTK+ widgets in the Fremantle UI is not really suitable for desktop apps.
I'm thinking that the best bet is to make a Xephyr nested XServer in a Fremantle window (a fullscreen window that has an app switcher button in the top left corner) and then run a chunky, finger-friendly version of a desktop GTK window manager... I'd love some help. At the very least, I need someone to make me a fullscreen Fremantle window with the switcher icon in the corner. |
