I thought I read somewhere that about boxes were discouraged, maybe I was wrong. Either way I had issues with the app menu and haven't gotten around to resolving them.

You can always go into the App.mgr, "uninstall", and see the version listed in there.

Also since you are posting a log, you can tell from that :) It does not look like you are using 1.0.8-6 which I just confirmed is in Fremantle extras-devel and Diablo extras.

it actually has been off and on. it just pushed me the update a few minutes ago. logs me in, but doesn't let me dial out. What is the Call Back Number field for? I haven't tried sms...

and texrat, you're such a wiseguy... lol

anyone notice how message edit cuts off part of the main table in the Maemo browser? i can't read some of my message

The callback number field is a required field and is your number that you want to get the ring back on when GV connects the call.

So you have login working again and now its back to the dial out issue? Want to provide an updated log?

Laughing Man 2009-12-01 18:48

Re: Dialcentral 1.0

To use the callback # field you first have to enter more than one number in the settings page of Google Voice. For example, it can be your Gizmo #, your home phone #, your cell phone #, work phone #, etc..

Then when you use dialcentral's callback settings it tells GV where to direct the call you start. So if you choose your home phone #, then a call you start from dialcentral will ring your home phone #.

Edit: The Google Voice webpage works the same way, when you type in a # or click a contact you want to call it will ask you which # (if you have more than one) to ring.

And see epage's post following mine.

Just a small thing to add to this, Dialcentral should support custom callback numbers that do not are not associated with your account. Unfortunately I don't have extra numbers lying around to test this.

It's getting pretty confusing if posts are for the NITs or the N900.

So far most issues people have had are actually agnostic of Maemo 4.1 or Maemo 5. I release the same version of software for both platforms at the same time. The main difference is the Maemo 5 version of Dialcentral has to go through the Extras Testing process. When releasing packages I am usually explicit on what the state is for each platform.

I should probably add platform info to the logs...

EDIT 1: I do actually agree though, I keep forgetting whether christexaport is using an n8x0 or an n900. Again, having it in the logs would help a lot for me at least.

I misunderstood the app to begin with. I expected it would make the call itself. I need to use my SIP account to do that, which I already do. Does the SMS function work? How does it alert you? The message layout is confusing.

I'd recommend that you first take some time to read up on Google Voice on its homepage as it will explain things that you ask bout here - like callback number; using SIP, SMS, etc.

You say the message layout is 'confusing'. Could you elaborate how its' confusing as just saying it is isn't exactly useful.

Google Voice is basically the middle man. Someone calls GV, GV hands the call off to whatever #, SIP, or Skype account (not sure if this is GV supported or a result of Gizmo handing it off to Skype to handle). Likewise, you make a call through GV, GV is the middleman and handles the call.

SMS works but not short code SMS. So you can't use the 5 letter/number SMS codes (though Google Calendar and Weather work..). SMS sent through GV will use the GV #. On the n800 it alerted you by flashing the blue led indicator. Now on the n900 I believe it ties into the notification system (so whatever LED that uses).

Platform info in the logs is another best practice. ;)

I'm going to *assume* significant codebase sharing between platforms. If yes, then would it do more harm or good to physically separate the discussions by platform? Or would it be more helpful to maintain one thread and beg people to proactively identify their OS/device?

The code is exactly the same between Ubuntu, Maemo 4.1, and Maemo 5, it just auto-detects at start up what features are and are not supported. I actually do all of my development and most of my testing on Ubuntu

So Texrat is right that it is best to keep these threads the same because its 99% of the time the same discussion.

Since I've been using Google Voice for a long time (8 months, nearly since the preview began), I'm well versed in how it works.

I thought this was a Google Voice app that didn't require it be using SIP or another vehicle. That's all. I really want a true Google Voice app that makes my device work like part of the normal phone app like on some Android devices. The SIP implementation using Gizmo5 is cool for the phone part, but I want to also be able to send SMS and receive as well, preferably using the default SMS/Conversation app. Dialcentral does neither of these. Its a decent app, just not what I expected.

I wasn't sure what short code SMS is. Had to Google it. I NEVER send messages to short numbers. My calling plan when I had a SIM didn't even allow it, and for good reason. The LED alert is nice, but why not the yellow alert with audio like all other apps? The LED isn't always obvious, and hasn't worked for me yet. I actually have already missed some messages, and haven't seen an alert of any kind. I think it loses connection or something.

Is it impossible to implement GV SMS into Conversation like a typical messaging service? Does Nokia have no plans to implement it? I know they said they're all about service accessibility now.

But wait there's more!

I am (slowly) working on a project called "The One Ring" which is meant to tie GoogleVoice support into Dialer/Contacts/Conversations such that it will be almost native. It will still require you to have a SIP account calls will forward to.

Hey, sorry if I am repeating a problem, but I would like some help. I'm using an N800 and the newest dialcentral. I try to make calls using the Gizmo callback number. It says 'calling the number' but it vanishes and nothing happens. But when I do the same with my mobile callback number, it works. Even stranger, I make call outs from the Google Voice website with the Gizmo callback number, and it works on the N800. What could be the reason that it doesn't work with dialcentral? Thanks!

This is still one thing I can't seem to understand...

Why the need to have Gizmo installed?

I have a Gizmo account but I don't have any reason to install it's product.

Maybe more details or a post of your log file will help Eric problem solve your issue.

Hey epage, I think I've finally got a better understanding on the way received SMS text messages are not being displayed correctly through DC.

Actually, I'm close to 4 bugs now.

Are you still taking into consideration of these for Diablo?

I'll go ahead and submit them. I just feel bad since the end result is that it at least works which is good enough by my standards.

Just don't start asking me about how low my standards are though. :D

Laughing Man 2009-12-04 13:25

Re: Dialcentral 1.0

You don't need Gizmo installed. Because Gizmo follows SIP standards, any program that uses SIP standards including the built-in internet calling application found in the n800/n810 (not sure what it is in the n900) can also use whatever SIP number Gizmo gives you.

Does your call history show you placed a call? This might help narrow it down to whether its on my side or not.

Could you post the log? You can do this by hitting Ctrl+l (letter L). this makes a copy of it so you then just need to find a place to paste it and get it up here.

Hopefully we can get this issue fixed for you but it might take some patience on your side as we have to go back and forth and test some things for me.

Please file them. Maemo 4.1 is still a fully supported platform by me, most of my users are still running it. I still test every release on my n810. Also my code is the same for Maemo 4.1 and Maemo 5 so ever.yone will have the issue.

Yes, it does say that a call has been placed. And to the other poster, I do not have Gizmo open, I just use the SIP number of the Gizmo number for the built-in SIP client for the N800. Which begs the question, how do I do CTRL+L on an N800? Thanks!

How can I help you with testing?
I install dial central from extras-testing. It is work.
But look like don't update new messages. It is mean when I open DC it is download all current messages. But if I get new messages (after loading DC) it is not downloading it.

Having the exact same problem out of the blue. This was all just working a couple of days ago (CORRECTION: turns out from the log it was probably about 10 days ago), but now does not.

CORRECTION: The call does NOT show up in the history -- I was not reading the history correctly. The number I was trying was coincidentally the last number in the call history, but it was from "10d" ago (which I assume means 10 days).

I tested calling the same number from the Google Voice website with the callback set to Gizmo and it worked as it should. SMS messages through DialCentral work as well, just not voice calling.

Here's the log (I replaced the Gizmo # with X's -- it's definitely the correct number though):

Here's the log (I replaced the Gizmo # with X's -- it's definitely the correct number though):

Let me know if you need anything else -- thanks for any help you can provide!

I am having the same problem with the same results as Chris, out of the blue. It may have started shortly after updating to 1.0.8.6, not sure.
I went as far as reflashing my N810 and installing just the minimum of apps! :(

I think I'm having the same problem as tubbycricket and internetpilot.

I haven't had this working before as I just got my n810 today and installed the latest versions of Gizmo and Dialcentral.

Dialcentral works for everything except dialing and receiving the call at my Gizmo number. Dialcentral does log in to Google Voice, and Recent, Messages, and Contacts are downloaded. I am able to select from my 2 callback numbers that I already had in Google voice (my mobile and gizmo numbers).

I am able to send SMS from Dialcentral.

Using my Mobile (cell phone) number works perfectly as my callback number from within dialcentral.

Using my Gizmo number does not.

I am able to use the web interface to Google Voice and can use my Gizmo number as my callback number from there just fine. That is, both with the normal Internet Call program, or with Gizmo running on the n810 I receive the call that I initiated through Google Voice's web interface.

However, it doesn't work from Dialcentral to call the Gizmo number. It says it's dialing, but then...nothing.

This is an awesome program, so thank you very much as is! Maybe you can help us out figuring what's wrong here though.

My only guess would be that there's an issue differentiating between landline/cellphone numbers and the Gizmo 774 SIP number?

I have attached the log I got from Ctrl-L. I opened Dialcentral, changed my callback number to my mobile number (6195555555). ( I think it was originally at my 7475555555 gizmo number). Then I successfully used dialcentral to dialout. Then i switched my callback number back to my 747 gizmo number. Then I unsuccessfully dialed out.

(I repeat, receiving calls does work through gizmo if initiated through google voice website, and they are received at either the Gizmo program on the n810 or the Internet Call program.)

(Note, in the log, I have replaced the real numbers with numbers ending in 5's).
