Yes, even for me I started out uninstalling the harmless apps - like OVI apps, but the real culprit was the Latitude app. After uninstalling this the OTA update went fine for me too.

Overall I am happy with the update - nothing major for me - except the browser portrait mode and the other little enhancement like battery life etc.
The N900 seems faster now a bit. But one thing which still is laggy is the phone app - if I call someone from address book and click on the call <number> the phone app still takes a few seconds to wake up and show the calling status.

Hi, I have a problem over the Nokia Software Updater to me on my N900 swollen updates, so I started to update ... so after 15 minutes with me ... and slashed remained stuck, it took 4 hours, so I disconnected the phone. ... and I can not turn on, probably will only Nokia logo, and switches off, I do not know what indeed, so please advice ...:(

I apologize for my English, translate it through google, I am with the Czech Republic, in English and I do not know how ... I hope that it will be at least somewhat understandable ...:(

So what does this line in the changelog mean?

"Stability and usability fixes to the Profiles applet. Selection, usage and restoring of ringtones."
Under usability.

Just got my N900 today and I thought the first thing I'd do was to upgrade to the latest firmware. Installed Software Updater on the PC and it's detected that the next firmware to update to is 1.2009.44.1. Do I have to jump to that one first before going to the latest one (2.2009.51.1)?

Also - where is the serial number on the N900? I tried so many different things in the Nokia registration website, but it kept saying invalid serial number.

Yes you do. 44.1 prepares the device (frees up some space in rootfs) to receive the bigger 51.1!

I moved /var/cache/apt/archive to a symlink to /home/ hoping that the download of the .deb files in to there wouldn't eat as much disk and then when overwriting the apps they were installing over the top of, I'd be good to go. Unfortunately as I watched it run through the upgrade my / quickly started to drop to 0% free, after it got there the used space increased towards the same as the total filesystem size! (Using the 5-10% root only allocation some filesystems have I assume).

FWIW, you could have rebooted after the initial 'apt-get upgrade' failed and it would have freed up a bunch of space. That's what I had to do, along with moving the apt archive cache, of course..

I figured it probably wouldn't be bricked, since it hadn't yet gotten around to doing the flashing parts.

I was pleased to see that the new python is optified. That saves a huge chunk of space on /.

Thank you to the Nokia staff for releasing this FW (and the prior FW update preparing for this) so soon after I received my device on December 23rd.
It is not even a month and you have released first major bug fix FW.
I have not had one reboot since updating to the latest FW.

Also my personal thanks to all here that voted for bug fixes and tried to honestly give feedback to help fix the problems even if your feedback was incorrect because you didn't know what you were talking about (like me, I know nothing about Maemo or python). The point is that you guys were helping or trying to help.

Hmm. NSU has been stuck on "1 second left" for the 44.1 update for the last 30 minutes. Is this usual? The phone has a white screen with NOKIA and the USB symbol on the top right hand corner.

It just means you need to use the name of the firmware file you've downloaded instead (if you've downloaded one of the regional firmwares).

You can install again afterwards, I think it's actually just the OTA updater being overly pessimistic.

I think it is your WifFi MAC address or your Blutetooth address, one of them will work.

I flashed the emmc with vanila firmware, then connected the device to NSU and it picked up the update 2.xxxxxxx51 and i done that and it installed fine an had no problems and ive noticed its faster. No auto rotate tho? :( Anything else in this new firmware that is gud apart from looking a bit sleeker an performing faster?

Re: Maemo 5 PR1.1 released today (January 14)

bare in mind i never done the .44 update, it never came up so i just selected what NSU was showing me.
Is that going to be a problem.....? Ovi store works fine an ive dwnloaded a few apps, which work okay.
Altho i did read somewhere that mentioned the 2.xxxxx.51 update includes the .44 update, so it should be okay then? or have i got it wrong

If you used NSU then there's no need to install any intermediate firmwares. OTA updates will probably require installing intermediate versions though (the 44 update was definitely required to do an OTA update to 51).

Re: Maemo 5 PR1.1 released today (January 14)

I notice on the tablets-dev.nokia firmware download site that there is a UK firmware for the 42.11 build:

RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.42-11.203.2_PR_COMBINED_203_ARM

But for the PR1.1 update there is only firmwares for USA, Middle East & North Africa and Global.

Am I correct in using the Global firmware to flash my UK N900?

If I use Nokia's NSU will that flash using the Global Firmware or does NSU have access to a UK variant?

The widget now only show the next two (?) weeks events. Previously it was very unreliable about showing anything accurately beyond the two weeks - what was shown was often not the next occurring events.

If you use NSU then it will flash a UK variant (though I don't know whether that's offering the 51 update or not yet), otherwise you'll want to download the 42-11 UK firmware and then do OTA updates from there (note that if you've had the 51 firmware installed already, you'll only be able to use the WLAN to update until you get back to 51).

Rob1n - I tried using NSU - but, as usual, there is no UK variant available for the new 51 firmware.
So I reflashed the 42.1 firmware and am currently using OTG to update to 51.

The only additional portrait support announced for this update by Nokia was for the web browser. Some bloggers and posters to forums were sure there would be full portrait support, but none of them ever had an actual source to cite.*

* Okay, I recall one blogger citing a first-level rep on the Brightpoint sales line, but that's just, well, humorous.
