A suggestion though, from what i understand sending an sms with key word Location will tell the phone to send its location, but any that knows about smscon and how it works can use that against me. How about this, instead of just key word Location, i use Location:password. that way the commands are customized to the user and not generalized as on an operating system where anyone that knows them can use the system

use the prefix instead

A request: Please instead of multiple consecutive entries consider in editing and adding (e.g. when you found the answer to your question before someone answered). Otherwise the thread will grow and makes it difficult for others to follow..

There is a command to launch a pre-existing script. Just create one script that will delete all your pictures and send the SMS to launch it whenever you want.

That's what I did.

@ BluesLee:

The smscon_daemon also use pnatd to send the SMS messages.

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

Hi, i've been testing the app lately, and i noticed that the camera command doesn't work fully, ie it sends the email but i cant seem to see the picture.

Another thing i observed it that all of the commands are centered around the pretext that if your phone gets stolen the thief wont change the sim card, but what if he does? a suggestion would be, upon a sim card change the phone locks and an sms or email or both is sent with the phone number of the new sim card, that way all the commands can be executed with the new number while the phone remains locked.

My apologies if this feature already exists and i haven't noticed

Anyone else having problems with prefixes set with SMSCon editor? I've set Smscon_ as prefix, eg. Smscom_Poweroff, and now the commands don't work.

It's already implemented (it's one of it's core features)! See also the wiki.

Thanks. Confirming this as an issue with SMSCON and have add it in the known issues list.

The "_" character does not get decoded correctly on reception and any command having this fails to execute.

Recommended: until a fix is made avoid using this character in the commands.

I can confirm this, the prefixes set using the editor didn't work for me either.

@digitalvoid: thanks, i found the feature in the wiki, my bad. I also noticed that the "email a frontcam picture" feature has gprs connection in brackets, does this mean that it doesn't work via wifi? because i get the email, but what i am unable to see i the picture.

I reviewed my code, but I fail to see where I could go wrong...

The underscore character is indeed a valid SMS character (it's in the specification of the GSM 03.38 character set), so it should work.

But.... When I put some prefix text (ex. 2 normal alphabet characters) in SMSCON-editor and update the settings, I don't see my prefix in the smscon_config file at the SMS "COM_XXXX" commands.

Or am I doing something wrong...

Thank you for the hint. I switched to a python version for
sending SMS using DBUS and now its working fine.

It would be a useful feature to add COM_CELLID as it might be
the only reliable informations to get via SMS. Thank you.

The default password for the SMSCON Editor is 12345 and should not be mistaken with the password that might be requested during the installation of the OpenSSH server (which is a dependency of SMSCON).

It is good to read the documentation provided.

On your other question, if you unistalled the application then you .. uninstalled the application.

If you use gmail, then your mail server is smtp.gmail.com.

Hmm, can we have an option to get the cell-tower id? This way, we can submit it to Police and locate the device (albiet approximate location onyl) even if the devices is within a building and GPS data cannot be obtained.

tnkx a lot.

I have 1question for u - Suppose if it is trying to send a mail then it requires gprs or wifi conn. How smscon makes it when it requires users interfere to select the conn(gprs/wifi) out of available connection.

I got this doubt because I'm facing some problem with my gprs conn. My phone is trying to connect gprs automatically, even if i'm not using gprs. and its even not asking which gprs/wifi conn to use. its using the default sim's gprs setting.
I'm facing this problem from the time i have clicked on test email option in smscon editor. This problem still persists even i have clicked end test.

to avoid automatically conn. Go to settings--internet conn.-- And change it to conect automatically to wifi or always ask.

Are you able to send simple mail or this fails too.
If the first then your GPRS has a very low limit and you need to contact your provider.
if the second case then look the documentation.

Follow what you see in the documentation:
http://wiki.maemo.org/SMSCON_Editor#...figuration_tab

It is known to work.

When you activated SMSCON it switched the internet connection to GPRS also in the settings. This is done always on activation by sending a command.
To revert: go to "Settings" > "Internet connections" and set again your preferred settings.

tnkx Nicholes and Saturn, now i find it easy to use. @Saturn: Ya i'm not able to send mail yet thru test email option in smscon editor. but as u said the conn speed is not so bad as i can send huge mails thru my mailbox frm my phone. anyway i'll go thru that config doc u mentioned.

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

I think this has been raised before, but is there any chance that SMSCON could use WiFi if already connected? I'm not expecting a new setting or anything, simply that if the phone is already online then no need to make any changes.

I know that you aren't keen to make many changes to SMSCON any more but:-
With ENABLECHECKHOST enabled wouldn't it be simpler to run the script found directly? This would mean I could host a shell script of my choosing and change it AFTER my phone is lost or stolen.

SMSCON is a brilliant idea and I feel much more secure now that I have it installed and configured. My only slight concern is that all of the options involve knowing ahead of time what you will want it to do. If we could run a remotely hosted shell script then the capabilities of SMSCON become endless!

the best anti theft app ever.
i have one question though, and i dont know if it already has been asked because there are too many posts to read, but is it possible to hide the received command sms so that the person who has the phone doesnt notice them? also has smth been done with the icon so that it can be only xterm startable? thanks for the answers

yes, it has been discussed. In short, the components for this part are closed and noone came (yet) with a hack to block them

You can remove (as root) the desktop file
Code:

rm /usr/share/applications/hildon/smscon-editor.desktop

In normal operation you should not get these messages.
Since you're getting them means you have activated smscon.

To bring it back to normal,
1. open the editor
2. goto the tab: Init
3. press button: Stop
4. wait few seconds and
5. press button: Start

Close the editor and go to the settings > internet connections
and set your connection settings.

Now it is back to normal mode where it will be waiting for a command.

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

Can anyone answer plz plz plzzzzzzzzzzz

what does the "On first command" do under the general settings???does that mean if send any command to the phone(not related to the lock or silence) it will lock or silence the phone if i check them?)

how do i create a script since i am a noob??

what does the command do?

if i send sms to thief's no. "Location" would it send me his location?? if yes then
what does the shell ,gps track off/on , front camera, commands do?

what is "prefix" under the commands?

Re: [Announce] SMScon (control your device with SMS)

I'm using smscon version 0.8.1, with limited success and have a couple of questions.

My first question regards silencing the device. I have this enabled in smscon-editor, but it doesn't appear to be working. When I send a command to my phone, this shows up in the smscon.log file

Code:

DAEMON ERROR: (SILENCE) could not get current phone profile (05-08-2011 13:31:25)
So that looks a bit suspicious, any idea what might be causing it?

Another issue is that I cannot get reverse ssh to work. Here is what happens on my ssh host when I try to connect after a Remoteon command:

I wanted to try doing the reverse ssh using the phone's wifi connection but no matter what I try, something keeps resetting the "Connect Automatically" system setting back to GPRS and then smscon fires up a GPRS connection.

Finally, the Trackon command isn't doing anything at all. No log messages when I send it, there's just nothing happening.

sorry not infront of a pc, so all from memory.

try to uninstall first and then delete as root the
/opt/smscon-editor folder

when you re-install you will need to setup all and the pass will be the default
