Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

I've updated http://wiki.maemo.org/Easy_Debian, in particular the section on the keyboard and also the FAQ on locales settings, in case somebody (qole?) wants to check. I've also added a small list of other applications of wider interest to power users.

This thread is so long now that some of the more crucial information in it should be archived in the wiki, I think.

Thanks, rebhana, I was thinking that I need to spend time on the wiki myself.

This international keyboard stuff is just not something I can answer.

I need to go through the wiki page and clean up the FAQ and stuff, and make two sections for the N8x0 version and the N900 version... Maybe on the weekend...

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

Hi there

great job so far, i had this running fine for a while and i loved it! keep up the good work!

Suddenly today debian lxde has decided to not work for me at all now so im in the process of getting it to run again but nothing seems to work so i thought i should report it somewhere.

Started 2 days ago while attempting to install the lastest updates through apt-get but they failed on the last few packages. anyways after closing down debian lxde and rebooting it later that day it would start to load but then crash back to the maemo 5 desktop (on a N900 btw). Since im quite new to the whole linux OS i was quite confused so i tried to reinstall the image using the shortcut and that failed to fix the crash. so in desperation i deleted the img file and uninstalled easy-deb-chroot. Now i cant reinstall easy-deb-chroot!

i have managed to download the img file seperately but when i use app manager to install easy-deb-chroot i get the following message:

unable to install 'easy-deb-chroot'.
some application packages required for the installation are missing.

Clicking on details gives me:
Application packages missing: bzip2

i have also managed to download the deb file for easy-deb-chroot but i cant get that to install either. any help would be appriciated.

u1tramarine: Have you got all of the official Nokia repositories enabled? bzip2 should be in one of those repositories.

An alternative is to enable Extras-testing and install that version. It should work better, anyway.

I also described the usage of xbindkeys provided by Easy Debian there, the hack regarding sticky keys etc., so that part you might want to check.

I still haven't figured out how the environment of Debian chroot is set. As I wrote here, I couldn't modify that by changing /etc/bash.bashrc. Could you give me some hints how I could tweak that?

hi guys and girls. would really love an answer to the following question:

as debian supports java, will it run the logmein application for remote support? thers a lot of people who want to know the answer to this because being able to use logmein for remote support from the phone would be fantastic.

please let me know.

I have in application catalogues:

Nokia Applications
Nokia System Software Updates
Ovi
maemo.org
Maemo Extras

None of them are disabled

Edit: Just tried to add the Extra-testing catalog but my n900 cannot connect to it!

Unless it has been removed, bzip2 should be installable from that. Have you done
Code:

sudo apt-get install bzip2
in XTerminal yet? (This assumes that you have rootsh installed.)

I just checked on my N900, it is still available from downloads.maemo.nokia.com (Nokia System Software Updates). I wonder if this is caused by a translation or policy issue (not all of the packages in that repo are available in every language or region)?

Your best bet is to add the Extras-testing repository. Copy and paste (ctrl-c, ctrl-v) the info from the Extras repo into a new repo, and everywhere you see "extras" add "-testing" after it. That version should install fine.

OK just made a new repo using the maemo.org repo and added -testing on the url. After doing this it has now let me download and install easy-deb-chroot :) ill try installing the img now and see if its worked.

EDIT: Yep all working now!

I installed Easy Debian on my N900 and everything was beatiful until I accidentally activated the “navigator” view mode in OpenOffice (I have NO IDEA how I did it) and now I can’t get out of it to the “normal” document view (making OO useless).

How do I close the &($#$*()% “Navigator” view?.

PD: feel free to move this post to wherever it belongs...

If you were running OpenOffice.org in standalone mode (from the Maemo desktop, outside LXDE), close it using Ctrl+q. Then open the X Terminal and enter the following command:

cd .openoffice.org

If the above command succeeded you should now be in the .openoffice.org directory. To verify this use the following command:

pwd

The result should be:

/home/user/.openoffice.org

If that is the case, and only if that is the case, enter the following command:

rm -r *

That will delete everything in that directory and its sub-directories. After that, when you launch OpenOffice.org it will recreate all the files in there, essentially starting from scratch.

If you want to use the Navigator, do so by launching OOo from within LXDE since you can close it very easily from there.

PS: Does any one know what config file to delete in order not to do a full delete of the OOo config area?

Well, at the end I've preferred to change jdownloader for tucan, in an attempt to gain some speed. And some speed I've gained, but, however, the window is huge and impossible to resize. I couldn't reach the end of the window, but finally I've been able to move the window from another place other than the topbar, by clicking the top-right icon of every window in easy debian (and lxde?).

Well, the result has been to lose the top bar of the window, with the unability to move again the window. I can't find any shortcut of the keyboard to emulate the right click, or to directly move the window.

Forums of lxde are not working, perhaps there there is the solution.

Well, I also think that everything can be done by keyboard ... so ... anyone knows how to do it with easy debian???

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

Are there any config files, or hidden files that need to be deleted before reinstalling easy debian (from extras-devel) for it to install and configure sound correctly?
I noticed that zynaddsubfx was in the menu of the v3b install, left over from the previous v2 install; Although not actually installed.
I was thinking that if the easy debian menu was left, maybe the audio config files were also?
The gnome alsa mixer is still loading with the error message.
Very sorry if I posted this in the wrong place.

@qole: I think in the long run (i.e. with a new image - provided you are willing to update that too) it would be cleaner to leave the task of setting the environment to the image, and not to /sbin/debian (or to /sbin/qchroot for $PS1). [It took me a while to figure out where $PS1 was set actually, hence my questions above.]

Except for the ooffice app, I'm everywhere using now "su -". Also in debchroot.desktop, where I have replaced
Code:

Exec=osso-xterm "sudo debian"
by
Code:

Exec=osso-xterm "sudo debian su -"
In my German environment, this resolves the (minor) problem that Maemo's LANG variable does not fit to the one set in Debian by reconfiguring locales. Special characters then don't display properly for root.

So I would after all suggest to include "su -" in debbie and also debchroot.desktop, and to include appropriate environment variables in a m5v3c image, say. The latter could include $PS1 in /etc/profile of the form
Code:

PS1='deb:\w\$ '
or similar (and no PS1 set in /root/.bashrc). That's how I'm having it for myself now.

Just noticed that the current version of easy-deb-chroot cannot move into Extras because the lmza package, on which Easy Debian now depends, is still missing some votes. In this thread we certainly have a number of successful testers of that packages. Vote here: http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...4.43-14maemo5/

I just checked. My package still has all the images commented out in the default .chroot file. But my package does not overwrite your existing .chroot file, so if your existing file points to an outdated package, you will have to modify it manually...

I wish Maemo had some kind of functionality that would ask if you want to overwrite or keep your config files, like in Debian.

Is this the reason that the new install v3b still shows programs from the previous v2 install such as the squeeze version of pulse audio. Could someone please point the way to repoint or rewrite the chroot file. Thank you thank you I want to see if I can get sunvox running in v3b

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

Since I'm using Easy Debian so regularly now, I'm wondering whether I should get me a good microSD card and put the image there in a bona fide (and also larger) ext2 or ext3 partition. I now have a couple of questions that may be of more general interest, and perhaps should be part of the FAQ in the wiki: ;)

1. Can I expect that having the image on a separate partition on a good memory card improves speed or will it always be slower than having the image in the internal memory?

2. If the answer to 1) is yes, should I produce ext2 or ext3 partitions?

3. Does the N900 expect the memory card to have at least one FAT partition?

4. Finally, how would I fill in the 2GB images of qole into a larger partition on the external memory card?

qole 2010-03-20 16:07

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

rebhana: I have a microSD with an ext2 partition, and I do my development on it.

On the N800/N810, the SD partitions are much faster than image files.

But on the N900, I can't really tell the difference between image files and partitions, except maybe with a stopwatch. Even the dm-loop package doesn't seem to make any difference.

I like the "disposable" nature of image files, and the way I can keep several images side-by-side on the N900's internal 32GB.

If you do make a partition, leave a small token FAT partition. Ext2 or ext3 doesn't really matter, that I can tell. Make sure you indicate ext3 in your .chroot file if you use it.

There are good instructions for copying the filesystem from an image file to a partition. Basically, you mount the image and partition, then use a tar command to copy the files between the two. I'll see if I can find the instructions around here and link to them.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

I have reinstalled easy debian m5 v3b but the sound isn't working.
I believe I read in a previous post that the pulse audio was set back to .9.1 but the version on this install is .9.21 same as v2. Also some of the things I've read about m5 v3b such as missing taskbar don't seem to be happening. Basically it looks just like v2 with no sound. The installed image is m5 v3b, the v2 image has been removed. The only thing I can think of is that I need to edit a config file, but which one? Thanks in advance for any pointers.

So far I have not tried out sound much in Easy Debian - I'm using it for other things - but I noticed that youtube videos in iceweasel (which hardly run anyway) do not produce sound in v3b, but they also didn't in v2. In v3b, I see that there is a music player, and even one song on it (Lament for Lost Dreams), but that doesn't play either for me.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

I've managed to install encfs under Easy Debian, a user-space encrypted file system (http://www.arg0.net/encfs), which I thought would be an interesting enhancement of my zim installation. To my amazement, it was not difficult at all and everything needed was available. Here are the few "Easy" steps needed:

Encfs requires the fuse kernel module, which is indeed available in the Maemo system, although usually not yet loaded. Because there is no group "fuse" under Maemo, I've changed the group ownership of /dev/fuse to users, and have all that automated by creating a file $CHROOT/var/run/onfirstchroot-ext.rc with the content
Code:

modprobe fuse
sleep 1
chown root.users /dev/fuse

This file needs to be executable, so also do:
Code:

[root@deb-m5v3b: /]chmod a+x /var/run/onfirstchroot-ext.rc
The actual installation of encfs is then just
Code:

[root@deb-m5v3b: /]apt-get install encfs
[root@deb-m5v3b: /]adduser user fuse

After that user (and not only root) can create and use encrypted file systems in Easy Debian

I'm hoping that this new version will reduce the daily bandwidth pummeling that qole.org is getting. I just checked, the daily download usage is over 79GB! That number suggests that the v2 image for the Extras version of Easy Debian is being downloaded more than 235 times a day. The new v3b image is 48MB smaller than the v2 image, and that will add up...

Somehow the nicely detailed changelog that you provided got lost by the move to Extra. Instead the download page misleadingly says:
Changes in version 0.9.46-1fremantle1

This app is now in Extras! A newer version is in Extras-testing. Please test the newer version and vote if you can

Hi!

I installed easy debian today, and it works great! but my "Close Debian" icon didn't installed, so now my only way to umount debian so I can mount the device in my PC is to restart the phone...

Anyone knows why this happened? any way to umount it manually or to recover the icon?

I don't know if this has something to do, but I din't download the image in my phone, I did it with my PC instead, I also uncompressed it in the PC and later I transferred it to the phone, so I didn't use the "Debian Image Installer" program... do I have to do this on the phone?

Thanks

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

(1) I have rtorrent built for the N900 and it's fairly easily scriptable, not rocket science. For a more heavyweight solution, there is even a (headless adaptable) Qt bittorent client (or two) in extras-devel. I reckon if there is serious interest in it, it's doable without too much fuss.

(2) Are you kidding ? Seems to me you're underestimating the popularity of Easy Debian :) Drop a line on any Debian list and you will be swarming with seeds.

And, as a (3), since we're talking Debian, you might also want to take a look at Jigdo if you want to stick to http, but conserve some bandwidth (and make updates easier).

NoX, I'm not sure why you don't have the "Close Debian" icon in your menu, it should look like the red "d" diamond being put into a box.

Please make sure you have the newest Easy Debian installed, as well as the newest Easy Chroot.

Even if you can't find the icon, you can also do the same thing from a terminal. Simply type:

Code:

sudo closechroot

Hey!

Im a complete noob here to Linux but I'm loving it so far. Installed Easy Debian but someone tinkered with the phone while it was on and closed it normally (and lost my stylus as well). I dunno if that was the trigger or what, but now:

- I do not find the MENU ICON in the desktop and I cannot click it. I cannot open the menu.

Any ideas?

Second question:

1- Is it safe to install apps from Synaptic? What about the dependencies and packages it says it will upgrade, install and change? No harm on Maemo 5?

Thank you for making the Maemo community simply the best out there :) Thank you for teaching me tons'o things.
