No Im not over my allowance and its not the settings cause I called tmobile n they guide me though the settings that are needed and it doesnt need a login name or pass either. The thing is when I got my data plan a while back they told me there is only one plan and its unlimited but the price depend on my phone. If its a smart phone it cost alot more. And luckily they have no idea what my phone is so they activated my unlimited data plan for only $10 a month but with this new firmware update somehow they detect my phone as a smart phone and wont let me use the data plan. I have no problem connecting its just that I cant do anything with it after I connect. since you guys here always have the answer to everything about this phone I was just wondering if anybody know a way around. if not then I guess I wont be able to update firmware ever again. Cause I dont want to pay $40 a month for internet instead of $10. And in case you guys r wondering how I called T-mobile and they still dont know I have a smart phone is cause they still dont know what a n900 is lol

are you sure you are using the epc.tmobile.com access point? I am still on the 5.99 tzones and it works great.

Nokia is being cheeky....... changing the "tablet" to "smartphone" quietly...

Yeah but I'm already on the smartphone data plan so I don't have to deal with things like this. Previous post says his tzones account is still working so you probably have to change your apn.

can anyone confirm this?? what does it do??

edit: btw i dont have a sim card right now, i am wondering if its the application "disable cellular"..... -

It puts the tablet in phone or tablet mode, of course!

Maybe that means horizontal or vertical?

It would be cool if you could specify settings or apps open when switching modes.

do it:
1. open x-terminal
2. sudo gainroot (you need rootsh package installed)
3. dpkg -s dpkg -s hildon-initscripts | grep Vers
it should be "Version: 1.26-1+0m5"
I had : "Version: 1.26-1+dp1"
to fix it you have to downgrade it:
4. apt-get install hildon-initscripts=1.26-1+0m5
5. apt-get upgrade
You should be able to upgrade now....

Sounds like someone ****ed up in their numbering scheme as dp1 seems to be considered a higher version... anyway, since i've flashed from the image, I'll just wait for the package to go away.

imho that is just some app-manager problem ..

*warning* you will have to use the x-terminal or ssh .. if that scares you / puts you off / ... ask someone else to do it or use the nokia flashing tool or delete _all_ the apps you installed and try again *warning*

but just a warning make sure that you have enough space on your root filesystem (use conky to show you or open a terminal and type 'df -h /' ) - I had ~ 38MB free and it worked fine - theoretically less should be ok but i wouldn't try it if i had less than the 13MB or sth the update says you need

also i won'T take responsibility if you brick your device, loose your data (imho if you don't make a backup and copy your photos and stuff before an update like that it is your fault anyway ...) this is just a comment to point out how I did it .. :p

what i did to install the update:
- disable all the extra repositories to avoid any updates you might not want just now ;)
- close app manager
- open terminal (or connect over ssh)
- become root user (htere is a package for that which makes it happen if u just type 'root') -- if you connected via ssh this is most likely not needed ;)
- type 'apt-get upgrade'
- look at the list if you feel like it - same as it shows in app manager - and then type 'y' to continue (it'll download and install the apps)
- wait for it to be done (shell prompt appears again)
- type exit (2 times) or close shell
-- at this point it stills shows the old version if you go to settings - product info
- shut down your phone and then start it up again [the first thing i saw there really was a notification that i got new mail ... Viagra advert :mad:]
- go ot settings - product info and stare at the new version and be happy ;)
- enable extras repositories again if you want them - which is most likely - in the app manager

again .. i do not take any responsibility if you break anything :-P but should there be an issue i might try to help if asked nicely ;)

guys.. Thanks a lot! Maemo community rocks. when I tried to update first, it said "connect to PC & update". I solved it. then it says "not enough memory". I solved it too with the help of the community.
The best thing to solve the memory problem is to go to xterminal and then type df -h and see how much free space you have in rootfs. I suggest to have atleast 45mb. Keep uninstalling unnecessary apps to get 45 mb. Thanks again!

I updated with no problems in Romania :)
Only thing that I noticed, is that now I can pair with my car bluetooth handsfree.
Before it wasn't possible.

45 is enough .. how annoying means i nearly didn't have to do the manual way - but i sorta prefer it anyway (as a long time linux user it is not a problem but my way is not really sth for novice users ;))

Just a quick question guys. Does the wifi bug really gone with this new firmware? I'm planning on uninstalling the wifi switcher if it already solved the bug.

if you do the crime then you need to do the time. if you installed applications from the Extra-dev and testing without knowing what you are doing then you need to do your time do uninstall and stop asking for help here repeatitively.

just uninstall every apps you installed from devel and testing then your space should be fine. and if it doesn't work then just reflash it using flasher or NSU.

blaming Nokia root space issues won't make anything better okay. blame yourself for being ******edly stupid for not knowing that those repos apps are not risk free. it's been warned before you installed it.

I did the apt-get dist-upgrade and it seemed to install everything ok, without errors! But the Settings=>"SysteminfoDialog" still says
Version: 2.2009.51-1
Any ideas how to check which firmware installed or how to update
the Settings=>"SysteminfoDialog"?
Thanks in advance!

You will just have to be patient my friend. Apt-get dist-upgrade will only update what is available for you. If it is not available for upgrade in your country on the firmware you have installed it will not update to newest firmware.
The only other way is to manually upgrade from the source but takes a bit of knowledge. Be patient and it will appear as an over airway update. Simples :)

This is all well and fine that you (and others) pointed out the limitations of us unworthy non-unix nerds but...you must admit that the root space IS ridiculously small. See, we are all users. We are all customers. We all paid a lot of money for a device in a very competitive market and some of us even have some IT understanding, even if not in the world of Unix, so can't we expect a slightly user friendlier system? Do I have to feel like an idiot because I simply cannot spend all the day figuring my device out since I have to work for a living and, well like to do more constructive stuff in my spare time? Look at it this way: If there weren't that many 'noobs', your beloved device will be forgotten in a very short period of time. Or in other words: We are subsidising your addiction with our money. A little respect please. And apart from that, the repetitive warnings of the expert-only repos, they tell me that it can mess up my system, to bricking it, cause nuclear explosions etc...but clogging up my root directory with junk seems a surprisingly simple problem and a layman-solution for this should have been taken into account by the developers. My message to some (!) maemo specialists is: Calm down, this is a forum and the purpose is to find help and give help. No need for patronising behaviour. Be happy that someone DOES need your help and frankly speaking, despite me calling the iphone a toy in an earlier post I sometimes start doubting the serious usability of the N900, too. One is a toy and the other is a hobby for nerds. Something in between would be nice.

After the update, my phone does everything faster :) media player volume has increased. When I try to connect to Wifi (displaying list of available wirless & GPRS), the font gets bigger (might be some bug!)
.deb files open directly using app manager :)

Hi all

I have the 205 (Vodafone) version of the firmware and wondering what would happen if i re-flashed to the newest global version?

Just don't like the idea that they have control over aspects of my tablet/phone much as Apple do over the iPhone

Any info or help would be much appreciated

Thanks
