Meh, way too Finnish centric, as per usual...
I'll wait for maemo.org & it's leadership (HF/HFC) to come to it's senses & be more embracing of the future, not only the past.
We could be waiting forever.... >.>

Sigh... Excellent read though, highly recommend to everyone.

what finish centric? only finnish I see there is the dot fi.?

Ofcourse jollacommunity.fi is not anyway near Maemo atm but...

Atleast its a start and if people registerer and give hints what we want to see it may happen more in the future.

Way better than sitting here and cry about "its not like maemo is blablabla"

Personally I am not a fan of Maemo at all. Escpecially not the forum. The forum really sucks bigtime and is not mobile optimized etc..

Hopefully jollacommunity can come up with something fresh, if we start give hints about what we want in the future on the new site..

So for got sake go register and tell what we want to see.

Hi there!

We are an unofficial Jolla-website. Well, actually we are team of 8 students of TAMK Consulting Academy from different countries and with various backgrounds.
I think there should be one unified hub for developers and users with sections for both kind of topics. This site seems to be oriented to non developers. I don't like the artificial division or requirement to make a separate site for each group of participants.

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

i'm pretty sure that they don't have enough time to spend on creating forums for us. maemo.org and other jolla blogs are already a community for jolla and sailfish. as soon as the OS and device comes out they will concentrate on these sides.
aand one more thing, some people mentioned about how they don't have official blog channels etc. they use chanels like facebook and twitter to reach waay more people than they would with an "official" channel. most of you may not use facebook and/or twitter but these are the powerful advertisement machines of today. and i think they also don't have enough time for an official channel.
lets just wait the release. ;)

I want a "fully integrated" community, so far nowhere comes even close to maemo.org in that respect...
Alas the only people stepping forward to keep maemo alive are nonplussed about it eventually morphing into something that encompasses newer platforms* as much as Maemo/MeeGo.
I hope that will change shortly after the 1st Sailfish device is out, if not, then I'll probably be spending much less time here.
Then there's the significant fact that much governance/physical infra is in place here now; "for the community" & "by the community", can the same be said for this other place?
I would go into much more detail as-to-why that site's no substitute, but alas time is tight lately... :-/

From what we've seen about Sailfish, I think it looks solidly appealing, but not necessarily groundbreaking. It would have made a nice PR 1.4 for the N9, for instance. Of course, we haven't seen that much just yet, but controlling apps from the multitasker view is likely to be more of a gimmick and actually useful for only a few apps.

At any rate, I remain optimistic and I like swipe driven UIs, so hopefully Jolla will have more to show and sell us soon. And it may be unpopular to say so, but swipe driven UI, Android compatibility, Qt powered development, and N9 style layout is already available via BlackBerry 10, though it is not as open as we would have liked. Jolla had better get a move on!

As far as forums go, I think that this one is one of the best, maybe even the best. (I follow the XDA forum and Crackberry, too.) Things are pretty slow around here nowadays. Development for the N9 is slow, people are migrating to other devices, but it is comparatively well organized and filled with knowledeable and helpful members.

Any more intelligent comments? Nixie Pixel usually does good reviews for common users, especially unfamiliar with Linux.

By the way, mobile youtube version uses this weird 3gp format which can't be played in normal browsers. Here is a normal version:

Well considering it's not likely to be shipping till Oct at the earliest, & possibly as late as Dec/Jan*, it's not really surprising.

I know the sw will be much more interesting, but hw is critical too.
I know they won't get close when it comes to the camera, but they can be competitive in other areas.

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Those in the know, know that Kittens (and, by definition, cats) RULE! Aside from hunting, or avalanche finding, why would anyone have a needy, expensive (if you really care about your dog), unable to take care of itself, all bark and no bite dog (as it comes to cats...especially Bengal or Tuxedo kittens/cats)?? Besides, female cats are twice (or more) the natural hunter of any dog, no matter how well-trained.

I join mikescomputing and am not amused with fetishistic 'jokes' about kittens/cats, so cut the nonsense. Any of my cats would have had no problem scratching the nose/face off of your dog, sending it away whimpering, no matter the type of dog and no matter your arguments to the contrary. Be 'cute' with some other line of discussion.

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

I'll continue such light-hearted references as that's all they are, they've only ever been used in the context of if/when things evolve into a "nail biting" situation.
Others/I used the same references in the epic N9 anticipation thread, if things become tenuous, then the kitten references will fly free again...
Now, back on-topic shall we folks. Makes the thread far more interesting/relevant when we post stuff relating (at least vaguely) to the core subject matter.

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Some new info on the device launch on Taloussanomat, a Finnish business newspaper. Seems legit:

http://www.taloussanomat.fi/porssi/2...a/20135451/170

Jolla will reveal their phone within few weeks (I hope that they do not miss the target this time…), according to Antti Saarnio, the director of the board.

Also,
– The phone will follow modern scandinavian design
– pre-sales campaign will launch mid-May through a kind of Jolla club
– a multi-level pre-payment is planned following the Kickstarter model. The more one pays, the more his/her phone will be pre-tailored to the club membership level. The details of the program are not yet finalized.
– The availability is neither yet decided. Finland will get the device first via DNA. (earlier China is mentioned as the second priority)
– They will also launch a pre-IPO bond to collect 30 million to support growth. They already have sufficient financing to launch the first device. IPO is still an option.

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Now that's more like it, wow... It sounds like they may actually be further ahead than what everyone thought?!
I'd still be happy with wider availability by Dec/Jan, but much earlier via a "kickstarter" program (even if it's not fully polished) may be a good/practical idea.
I wonder if they plan to integrate this "Jolla Club" into Hildon Foundation's infra or build something completely separate? I hope there can be a merging of sorts longer-term.
But given how slowly the HFB/C has been inching towards completing simply the migration* let alone future projects, it might be best if Jolla stays away :(

*thanks to all the tragic political issues that seem to consistently plague this community

Jalyst and mikecomputing lives in the same town. I would love to see them go head to head with their claws.

Anyone wants to go back to discussion about jolla. The device will revealed within weeks... Only a few days left.

This is actually funny.

Here at TMO people are excited about this and see this as an opportunity.

At Finnish Mobile phone forum people see this as an act of desperation from Jolla and are already laughing at "stupid fanboys who will never see their money again or get a phone after paying for it".

Dave999 2013-04-16 12:08

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Jolla is a start up. People with any care for money would go for safer choices.

When you are investing in start up is often that you ever seeing your money again, but once in a while you get an amazing award. Not sure the customer have a anything to gain here to fund jolla experiment. But if you can afford to lose the money just buy one.

But of course, It would be cool to know what you get for your 650 Euro.

What's the deal?

Hacker 2013-04-16 12:49

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

This is easily the most exciting Sailfish news in some time.

What do you guys think that they mean by modern Scandinavian design? Are there specific design elements that are thought to be Scandinavian, or are they just talking about it being an all touch screen bar-styled form factor? Any pictures would help.

Also, does anyone know what frequencies are used by DNA, the Finnish carrier that will launch the device? Does DNA offer any LTE frequencies/service? I am just wondering if there is any chance that a US carrier would be compatible with the phone . . . Maybe a multiband approach?

And Kickstarter has been successful with technology projects like the Pebble smar****ch, so why couldn't a similar approach work for Jolla? I think it could and eagerly await the device's announcement.
