I really can't see how the update can be called "great".

* no bluetooth headset to take advntage of skype

* no video call facility with skype

* loss of previous video call facility through nokia call

* no apparent improvement in battery life as claimed

* youtube etc still ridiculously jerky, perhaps worse that previous version

* no extras such as pim, decent "canola" style media player, more vid codecs etc as loooong suggested here.

Stop being so damn pessimistic! Many of you sound like a bunch of whiners! If I were a developer I'd say "screw this...I'm not putting any more effort forth for a bunch of unappreciative twits". Given that it's only been a few months since the last update, I'd say this is pretty cool. I also can say that it looks as if the developers have put in several less noticeable things that they will use to build upon over the next few months. We kept clamoring for an update....they gave us one. Next time, if you want more improvements...fireworks...or whatever...then shut up and wait. At least we have a voice. Ever see this type of action with Microsoft. I can guarantee that some of you will hate the next update....here's why:

It will not enable the "toast buttering feature" you will still have to butter your own toast :(

The holographic image projector is buggy and inadvertently projects images of your 90 year old grandmother in the nude....thus Nokia has decided to put this off for a later release. :eek:

Rumors that the battery will be replaced by a hamster wheel with tiny elves are greatly exaggerated.

Although Skype may have video in the next release...the women on the other end will still be mildly disappointed with the image on your end. :rolleyes:

In the next release the R2D2, C3PO, and Boyz2Men protocols will all be enabled.

In the next few releases the video playback will improve to the point that when you watch porn on your N800 you will feel like part of the action. Unfortunately your N800 will still feel like plastic as the human flesh emulator is still in beta, thus you will probably hurt yourself no matter whether you are male or female. :p

The N800 will become an intergalactic communications device (much like a cell phone) but you'll look ridiculous holding up to your ear. :D

Ok...in all seriousness....

I have done the update. It works fantastic. Skype works very well...especially considering it's a first release...Youtube and the like play much better, especially once the video is completely loaded....Flash 9 enables me to use a whole bunch of sites I couldn't use before. If you update correctly...get the latest versions of programs (not necessarily the ones that show up in the Application Manager) everything just works. The only issues I had were with OMWeather...(I upgraded to 1.8 from the Maemo Garage and it worked fine)....Simple Launcher (again...got version 0.94 from the Garage and everything was cool)...installed Canola BEFORE installing Python 2.5 (others had reported problems doing it the other way around...could have been a fluke, but it worked for me)...disabled "extras" in the Maemo repository (it was giving me an error, so I commented it out)...made sure to install just Pidgin this time instead of Gaim....

I did restore from a backup of my data...no issues there. Just be sure to reboot a few times as you install key applications. My favorite theme is Plankton...it works fine...you may have to change themes back and forth once or twice and reboot to get all the elements of the theme (such as scroll bars) to work appropriately. (I didn't have to, but some have reported this as necessary...and I have had to in the past when changing themes normally) I almost never use the thumbboard, but it worked fine for me when I did. I use the pop up keyboard or my bluetooth keyboard (when I have a lot of typing to do). Some of the Google features I use like Google Calendar...now work better in Opera, however all of them work in Minimo...so if I need to use them...I simply use Minimo instead. The ability for the Internet radio applet to play Real audio stations like the BBC is a neat new feature. I like the new update...very much! Keep 'em coming :)

In closing...I've been a LInux guy for years. When a new update comes out I normally wait for a few weeks or months for the dust to settle and the initial bugs to be worked out before I update to the latest release of a particular distro. This time I did not...I updated within 12 hours of it's release....given that, it's amazingly stable. I'm very impressed! So...attaboy Nokia! Thanks for the update....looking forward to more! :)

just to add my two cents, i agree with dtrask - nokia is leading the way (i don't see any other companies with pocketable internet tablets) and with each firmware update, it gets better

*Youtube plays well in maemo-browser when video is fully loaded
*skype skype skype! my girlfriend just went overseas, perfect timing! =]
*touch screen sensitivity has a marked difference! i was getting tired of pressing much harder near the right edge and this firmware update just fixed that

have had no problems installing programs so far, pretty stable as far as i can tell

the internet tablet is suppose to be an internet tablet, not a pmp or pda - nokia's making it good at one thing (internet browsing - hence the youtube/flash and skype improvements) before moving on to the others, and i'd say it's a smart move

open source developers can help create PIM and media player apps much better than they can flash 9 and skype for the tablet, so nokia picks up where the open source community leaves off with those improvements - while the open source community introduces improvements like mplayer and GPE to fill in gaps, so even though it's suppose to be an internet tablet, because of the open source community it can be much more

if you want something more powerful, try a UMPC that runs (*gasp*) windows at slow slow speeds and is much heavier and/or bigger, and x3-x10 more expensive

I'd agree with you but for the fact Nokia are spending more time adding non-internet browsing functionality such as Google Talk and Skype than they are fixing the woeful Internet focused applications (such as RSS and Mail) which ship with and let down the the devices so very badly. And Opera is not the ideal browser for many common sites either.

Google Talk and Skype fall into internet telephony, thus internet connectivity.

Adding that functionality a gadget that "can't make phone calls" as the masses initially stated; so now they can. So they can/should buy it... and perhaps be confused by VoIP. But they can make a phone call.

RSS and Mail definitely need to be beefed up though. Flash and Opera being upgraded... that's an internet tablet.

Damn. I need an N800 now.

And TomTom also uses Ogg files on their navigation products (TomTom Go, PDA and phone versions) for the voice directions. There are probably more vendors using Ogg where it's not appearent that they do.

Various issues:

o For the record, I restored my backup and had no issues at all.
o The improved stylus sensitivity was an unexpected and welcome upgrade.
o The biggest letdown was that media player still has extremely limited codec support, and I still can't play the videos from my still cameras (which is one reason I wanted that separate, additional external SD slot in this device -- so that I could pop in SD cards from my cameras without removing the 'fixed' SD card). Big disappointment, as this one should be easy enough to fix. There's a free GPL media player for Palm T3 et. co with source, codecs and all.

And finally:
Had the same problem, now and before. The fix is to reboot the device after (re-)installing omweather, after that omweather will download weather (and continue to work also if you change to another site).

You don't have to go so far as to reboot, just unselect it as an app so it disappears, then reselect it.

This is true. It is also very commonly used for games (and probably lots of other software on a "behind the scenes" basis), because there are no licensing fees. My point about OGG not being used as much as MP3 and AAC was to be "by end users." So, I see that there apparently are some options (ogg-support + UKMP/kilikali/Mplayer...surely I tried ogg-support + Mplayer before the FW update??), but I can't install them right now because certain packages won't install. I guess I'll have to reflash w/out restoring....
