can someone explain why (unlike the browser) one needs to press the key combo with "r" to rotate the screen in applications like sms/email and so on..?!

really a pity, should have been handled as an option, just like with the browser, would have been perfect

sorry for the probably dumb question but if one has boot menu installed how the hell can you access maintenance mode x_x holding "U" just refuses to work

Do i really have to connect my N900 to the pc to update?

When I use the Nokia updater, it says that it can't connect because of two files that are needed which are, i don't know, maybe lost in space.

this is frustrating :(

@pressure- no, you can also do it via your mobile..go to the application manager and click on updates, the wizzard will tell you what to click next..takes about 10-15 min..

Available to Greece Over the air. I flashed though because i didnt have much rootfs probably... Well good news from me till now, fmtx-faker still works but its accesible only from media player and not settings (not a big deal). FINALLY you can increase/decrease volume when phone is locked!!! The battery isnt that much drained after flash and about an hour of wlan connected and installing apps. What else? Ah, a big surprise for me: rootfs went to 96mb from around 33mb WITH extras-devel and extras-testing ENABLED!!! It goes over 100mb without them. And the virtual keyboard isnt as bad as it seems, i kinda liked it!

Edit: I miss the More... folder though :( ... Now all the time i click the Settings icon (its where More... was)...

I too updated OTA (Greece) after i uninstalled a few apps cause it just refuced to do it all together when i first tried, it wasn't a rootfs issue, just some app that wasn't playing nice with the update...

Took a bit of time but it all went ok, no problems no reboots no drama this time around.

Good things i can report, the phone seems a bit more responsive, i like the new "global" search option directly from the hardware keyboard, as it's faster than fiddling with popup menus.
Ovi maps is much better and actually functional now, but still lacking that all important part of vocal directions.

On the third party apps i DEPEND on, epseakcaller works fine after i removed it and made a fresh install and my-menu works fine too, i find it much more usefull than anything nokia had to offer up untill now...

Bottom line, for me the N900 experinment is over, i bought this phone on January and 5 months down the road it is still missing things that are built in but never implemented, like the radio module (i don't care much about the transimter, even tho that's in there as well), video calling, now only implemented via Skype and Gtalk which is useless to me since i only use it to remotely check a 3G Cam i have setup...

I knew from the get go of all these problems and i do know that the N900 is firstly an Itablet and second a phone, still i am too old and have very little free personal time to be Nokia's beta tester...

I do love the fact that there are so many ppl in this community that are willing to put the time and effort to fix Nokia's problems without asking for anything in return and i have nothing but absolute respect for them and their work, but at the end of the day, it's all through trial and error for which as i said before i have no time....

I just hope the N8 comes in a more working order out of the box when it gets here...

ok this is bugging me now, OTA is asking me to back up my data via pc suit, but of course its not damn supported on ovi/ pc suit is it!
next i cant update via nsu because of the overclocked kernal so the app just closes
thirdly can manually flash because i have boot menu installed soo no maintance mode!, btw i cant find away to get rid of boot menu, its no use to me any more ...

This is been driving me crazy but i finally go it to update OTA

I didn't even know OTA was a choice it kept telling me to use nokia software updater. I installed it on 2 computers, tried the update, failed, flashed my n900 to orignal kernel, still failed

but what i think got it to work was that I uninsalled the following apps:
open arena, tick still, freoffice, brain party, and tux race
Thanks to the advice in the forums, and a few from this thread

No matter how much I uninstalled or disabled catalogues, I could not get rid of the software updater message in the app manager.
Ended up moving /var/cache/apt/archives to /opt, after which apt-get dist-upgrade was perfectly happy. But the app manager still wanted the software updater.
So I did apt-get dist-upgrade from inside an ssh session over wireless LAN, which completed nicely, only asking me for confirmation for a single config file to be overwritten.
At the end of that, only one view was visible on my desktop, with all the widgets on top of each other, GSM functionality no longer worked and I couldn't establish a Skype call.
After a reboot, all seems well.

Not enough space in your rootfs, you will have to clear around 57/58mb to do it OTA, otherwise you will need to feflash either with NSU, or Flasher3.5.

Was a pain in the butt to free up the ~40 MB of rootfs necessary to do the package install (uninstalled everything from extras-testing/devel and still needed to resort to symlink magic to make it go), but ...

It works! Having a back button in browser portrait mode is great, finally frees up the "long press" of the camera softkey for bigger and better things.

I did find a minor regression -- doing ctrl+backspace (via shortcutd) when in browser portrait bounces you back to the desktop rather than the application dashboard. ..it's not the end of the world, I can press the button again.

I managed to do a OTA update with about 40mb free. I suspect, as others have reported, that the apps you have installed have as much to do with the success of the update as the free space.

In terms of the actual update, I've so far encountered no bugs and the performance of some apps (particularly the browser & email) seems significantly better.

It was tuxrace that prefented my OTA update. After deinstalling it was no problem.
I am using the preinstalled 'Digital Nature' Theme, and realized that there are some bugs now under 1.2 (was not there before). sometimes the menue bar (e.g. when updating catalogues or in the calendar) shows some blue dots and there is some mistakes in rendering the background. The lock screen suddenly is blue behind the slider. I tried to install other themes and reinstalled it, same effect. Also realized that changing the default themes does not change the background anymore (I believe that was the cas in 1.1).

Right, UK OTA updated without any issues. I can really see no differences as a user... as a developer yes it's nice to have updated libraries and qt but... really not much to see?

My battery level was worse yesterday than i have ever had it before, by the end of the day i hardly had any charge left on the device (no difference in widgets installed, probably less internet browsing than normal)

The device became quite warm to the touch only when i was downloading apps from the application manager.

Ok, just to share my thoughts on this update: I did an update this morning (original firmware was the 2010.02-8 firmware). After making sure my rootfs was clean enough - and verifying it still (re-)booted correctly - I started the update.
The update itself seemed to go OK. Upon reflash:
* all fonts where replaced by [] (blocks)
* theming was totally gone (I saw a basic gray window with [] where the pincode window would be) but the button layout was largely the same
* upon loading X, in the left top corner a purple status bar was displayed, with no text/icons
* after a minute or so, the device rebooted itself

I also tried some other things, by e.g. using the camera button within that 'working minute'. This worked: the camera window appeared.
At one time even the browser appeared, but with a blank screen. In both cases it still rebooted. It thus seemed a GUI-restricted issue.

I reflashed the device using flasher3.5 (to the latest 1.2 update/Global ed.) and it worked.

Now I will have to restore all my settings; this is not for repetition and thus this will probably be my last update for the N900 (unless I reserve 2 weeks of my spare time to do the update).

(luckily I make a full / and /home backup each night, so with a lot of tweaking I prolly can get back a lot of my settings - let this be a warning however).

I updated OTA here in Penang about 24 hours ago.

Got the usual 'Use a PC' message.
I used apt-get upgrade to figure out what's the problem. It was a couple of packages. gstreamer-plugins-extras-bad, fmtx-enabler & libgles1. I had to remove Extra Codec Support, FM Radio, Tuxrace, gltron & Brainparty to make it work.

Had 60MB free on root & the update took almost 20 minutes. But I was relieved when it completed without incident. Didn't loose any data, just some settings reset. I was surprised that even my custom boot video was still there.

I didn't notice any different is performance or stability, but love the new features. ;)

Hi,

I used either the alpha or beta, didn't use any other theme. In any case: the fact that it didn't show a correct font wasn't the worrying part, the fact that it rebooted was

I guess I could build a rootfs from what I have backed up, reflash and try again to see what was wrong (but this time with some preparation), but I hope that I am the only one with this problem :)

So I did the same as ontge.
Dunno what all happened then tough..At least it ended with 3 warnings wich had something to do with python2.5, python-support and py(-something else-).
What to do now??

Why doesnt the backup app on Nokia PC Suite???
When I open it up it always says that there is no phone connected and that I need to connect it.
