Depending on the actual ceiling of the chipset, the actual degradation curve of the silicon is not proportional, so if you stay under the point / ceiling, the chipset should last a normal life. Based on most Droid efforts, the "comfort" zone appears to be 800 mhz, but most report no problems at 900mhz or 1ghz. All kinds of issues are reported at 1.2ghz and this is the point temps spike by ten degrees.

Depending on the cooling system in the N900 compared to the Droid, the N900 should last as long at 800mhz as 600mhz (for a max speed with dynamic clocking). Seems the N900 has better heat dissipation (based on tear-down views of both).

The point that the actual ceiling is breached, the temps will spike about ten degress and freezing will occur. This is the point and state that the chipset will have a much shorter life span. Unless for whatever reason, the 3430 in the Droid is a more robust / better version.

It's awesome how scalable OMAP3's can be :)

Just imagine how fast a device with an OMAP4 running @ 2Ghz default would be if it was overclocked? :D

I'm actually quite surprised how good the overclocking potential turned out to be. I had never imagined that the thing would boot up even close to 1 GHz.

Me neither, its actually 100% stable at 1000mhz. Im running DSP @ 520mhz and its not giving me any trouble either. Playing videos is now stupidly smooth and the onscreen gui in kmplayer doesnt slow down at all.

This all sounds fab, just waiting for the files now and a quick guide on howto do it, is it the same procedure as flashing a new firmware with flasher 3.5?

Pretty much yes. In linux environment its like:
1. Put phone to update mode (phone off, Press and hold U plug in usb cable) then run

2. flasher-3.5 -k zImage -f -R

on windows biggzy just run maemo flasher as admin then run the command

flasher-3.5.exe -F zImage-800mhz -f -R

make sure you put the kernel file into mameo flasher folder on pc so the flasher can find the file
