Thanks rash. I have a UK version and I have received all of the firmware updates I believe.

However I did it via the command line after installing rootsh and it worked fine. I am now up and running. Thanks for the help.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I unzipped all files to /home/user/MyDocs/Sygic (instead of /home/user/MyDocs/) .

That's not a problem if you edit the path in /usr/share/applications/hildon/sygic.desktop.

Use vi or mcedit. If it's too difficult for you, install Midnight Commander (name: mc) and lunch F4 for editing mode.

I think is a problem of CPU loading during navigation. In fact analizing graphs from batterygraph, during usage the CPU float from 80% to 100%. And the battery lasts even if the phone is using car charger

Ok, Im having the same problem here

When I look in the root of the MyDocs Folder, I can see the maps and folders and 4 files
Installer - looking in properties of this file it seems to be an xml file
SetupAndroid.apk
SetupSymbian
SetupWinMobile

If I select the installer file, Maemo asks me what application I want to open this file with???
I cant see any Deb files unless the file extension is hidden?
There is no setupmobilemaps file that i can see??

edit

I have just downloaded the zip file instead, and there is no setup for maemo listed in the root of the archive?
I can see a symbian one, winmo, and an android set up file thats it!
I know I selected the maemo version...

You haven't downloaded the Maemo version then. The one I downloaded just had the SetupMobileMaps.deb file in there (that was the ZIP file - I didn't try the .exe).

Try one more time, you should get an EXE file, install it onto your PC and then use assistant to SYNC in to your N900, the DEB file should be in the /home/user/MyDocs/

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Any chance that Sygic provides Romania maps? I'd totally pay 60 euros for this app as Nokia doesn't want to provide free turn-by-turn for N900 users. Or maybe it will become available with Meego?

EDIT: Sygic only provides city-to-city maps for Romania.

I would really like to learn more about the above. Could someone from Sygic comment, please? Will the application really try to go online? That would be another shopstopper for me, as I would only use the application in other countries, so would never ever go online on 3G.

(I would also like to know if someone has managed to use Sygic with an external BT GPS, and if so, if there's still a lag issue.)

not Sygic is trying to go online, but the N900
you can turn assisted GPS off in the preferences...
and yes, you can use a bluetooth GPS, but I don't know if it will have the lag, as I haven't the lag with the internal..

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Aha, of course. That's btw one of the reasons I disabled the built-in GPS the same day I got the N900. If it works with an external GPS (ie. a quality GPS, unlike the TI chip), then that could solve several problems at once. My Holux can be reprogrammed to update 5 times a second (instead of once), for example. And no need for any "assisted" GPS.

If you are the only one having this problem that means your CPU is doing something during the navigation....see if you have any applications running in the background updating info all the time....that`s where the problem lays.

I am very thankful for all of the information here as it seems to be answering all the questions I would have. My only downfall is that I have no idea which program to use to open the lines, how to find these lines or how to change them and save my changes?!

If someone could help me on these small point I can get rocking and rolling on my own tweeks.

Install leafpad. Then in x term type leafpad [filename] and it will go into edit mode where you can make the changes. Ensure that you navigate to the right directory where the file you are trying to edit exists first.

Make sure you're on a wireless network with a pc.
1. Go into the extras repositories and download rootsh as well as OpenSSH Server.
2. Open up xterm (it will ask you to enter a password here, remember it youll need it), type in the following two commands:
Code:

sudo gainroot then tap enter
ifconfig tap enter

Look for the ip address of the n900 (usually a 192.168 number)
3. download winscp from the internet onto your computer
4. Host name: The IP address of the n900
user name: root
password: The password you put in xterm.
then tap login this should log you into the workings of the phone
then go too /usr/share/applications/hildon/sygic.desktop
and change Exec=/opt/sygic/Drive/Maemo/drive -cwd=/home/user/MyDocs/Drive/Maemo by putting -rfull at the end.

Exec=/opt/sygic/Drive/Maemo/drive -cwd=/home/user/MyDocs/Drive/Maemo -rfull

Preferences of the N900
Location (I'm translating from german...)
Network-positioning -> untick to deactivate.

See my post, it's the easiest method, where you don't have to install anything except of rootsh

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

ok, so I bought it this afternoon, downloaded the zip, copied the files into /home/user/MyDocs
found it segfaulted on run
unplugged from usb and rebooted
and it runs fine to the point of entering activation code.
I select 'automatic'
and enter my code. When I hit 'done' it just sits there for a bout a minute then segfaults with
*** glibc detected **** /opt/sygic/Drive/Maemo/drive: free(): invalid next size (normal): 0x0085dae0 ***
followed by stack etc.

any one got any ideas?

edit: when I try 'manual' and enter my code I'm told 'could not find correct activation code for Europe'

dwould 2010-03-19 17:26

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

ignore me.. I'm an idiot. for some reason I equated 'product code' and 'activation code' as the same thing
and sadly it didn't bother to tell me I had entered garbage in the automatic way, just crashed. ahving gone properly through the manual steps.. all appears fine.

Just dropping a line thanking you again. I reinstalled and now the application's working flawlessly.
