Close, but no. It will be called the nPhone. Thanks for playing.

;) <- It's a joke qole, don't get your panties in a bunch. :p You've tossed enough my direction that surely you can recognize them coming back.

You are pushing the debate as a yes/no for all devices to come, while ragnar is basically saying that the Maemo platform needs to be prepared to support a UI without a hardware D-Pad. Then the device programs willing to use Maemo can decide. As they could decide to have lock screen key or not, camera button or not and etc.

Do you realize I'm not really looking for a win, but was just making a joke?

Anyway, I got from ragnar's arguments that he wants support for a d-pad or other such hardware eliminated completely. If my interpretation is wrong, mea culpa. I'd rather it be in the HAL and not supported by Nokia for whatever reason than completely removed.

Exactly, Mara. I requested that very thing the last time this debate came up.

My main desire is to see the sort of support that would allow a gaming version to be created (my third platform variant wish), ie, the possibility of buttons on both sides of the touchscreen. Yes, I realize Nokia is reluctant to go there after flubbing the N-gage hardware, but I still think there's potential. Just put the proper hooks into the OS so that the company at least can respond quickly if it turns out the need develops.

Thanks for that one! I can confirm that the Maemo 5 lead device does not have a VHS tape slot! ;)

We are not concerned in this discussion with things like a lock screen key or a camera button. We are concerned with removing UI related HW keys.

I think the point Quim was trying to make is that our work in Maemo Software is a R&D function. That is 50% R and 50% D. A lot of our work is research at one stage of a project and development at a a later stage when we built a piece of software for a device. Especially, our work in open source is partially separate from the work to built devices. You will see increasingly more and more contributions to upstream projects not only for Fremantle but also Harmattan. To make conclusions from open source contributions about individual products becomes increasingly difficult. Work in open source should not by linked too close to products as long one competes with closed operating systems.

Even for Fremantle, we had invested a lot of efforts in research which you can see in the pre-alpha SDK. And not everything that you find in the pre-alpha kernel equals the lead product or potential follower products. As far as I remember, there are two 5 MPIX and one VGA camera driver in the kernel of the pre-alpha SDK. I haven't seen a device with two 5 MPIX cameras (stereo-photography?) and I doubt it would make much sense. Adding a driver for a lower spec or higher spec camera is easily done.

@Peter

if you want to be successful and earn money - then you provide a product - short
  • (before others do it )
Because
otherwise you will not survive Maemo - and Nokia sets its priorities differently - from today to tomorrow - therefore sets priorities - time is money - otherwise it will be very tight for Maemo
