-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root /usr/sbin/usbmode.sh without blue LED.
I don't know nothing about notification area (you mean hildon status area?) but probably some kind of plugin is needed.

Edit: probably it's just a matter to execute hd_status_plugin_item_set_status_area_icon()

The LED is a nice idea but broken, how do we get this into updates?
