N900 and Windows Phone is not at all similar interfaces.

No he's referring to Window Mobile not WP, it used a VERY different UX, one still very much rooted to a desktop-like UX.

Ok, that's the most stupid text i've seen this week. (And there were some stupid customer mails.) Yes, Twitter _is_ laughable.

Twitter texts are usually really weird (one has to break one's head to read them). That's the result of their post length limitation. Normal networks like Diaspora use hashtags as well, but don't require you to speak in bird language.

There's MANY other players out there that the Sailfish Alliance needs to focus on, they don't need to grovel to Nokia before anyone else.

I don't think the may 20 is the date. I think it will come sooner. The 20th is the date for some Qt ******** in silly cone Vally. I assume we don't have to wait that long. My guesstimate is that 9th is the day for first sailfish announcment.

Reading it again... probably, but it'd still be a good idea to double-check...
But I guess if they really were having problems they'd never (publicly) confirm that.

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Some new info on Talouselämä:

New professional CEO has been nominated. Tomi Pienimäki has been an advisor and investor since the beginning. He is also the brother to Jolla's sales director. I understand the need for pro CEO, though, shouldnt he be more from marketing background than logistics? Sounds like the old Nokia to me.

Also an interesting comment on the Ubuntu and China connection. “Based on our information there has been no official selection of this sort and there would be no sense in..., It was only a joint research project, China is happy to co-operate with everyone."

Some new members of the board. Ari Jaaksi (!) and Steve Lau from China Fortune holdings. IMO it is good to have Chinese parties involved. Also Boukerche Mohamed, of whom there is not much information.

Jussi Hurmola seems to be a free agent nowadays - still in the board though. Overpromise, underdeliver?

They confirm that pre-sales campaign will start soon.

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

On another article only in FInnish.

The pre-sales will start soon (the Finnish term used could be translated "within few days"). Pre-sales campaing is not so much about collecting financing, more about engaging fans. Finnish 'Invesdor' will supply the platform for the campaign.

The journalist is shown a prototype device, but is not allowed to share any information in it. The new CEO says that it is designed for 'individualists'. It is said that the phone will be slightly cheaper than the competition (ie the hw is not as high-end? ;) )

Addition to the article in English: Hurmola has also left the board and seems to have sold his shares.

Jolla gets new CEO and board
Quote:

Finnish smartphone start-up Jolla is changing its CEO. The new CEO is Tomi Pienimäki, previously CIO of Itella, the Finnish Post.

Jollas previous chief executive officer Mark Dillonwill continue as the company’s software development lead.

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Q: "Jolla chairman of the board Antti Saarnio, why did you switch the CEO again?"

A: "Jolla has been in an R&D phase. Now we are preparing for product delivery, which changes the role of the CEO."

Does that mean that for more traditional companies where such phases co-exist, a schizophrenic CEO would be a good (and a possibly stabilizing continuity) opportunity?

EDIT: And someone familiar is back:

Quote:

New board members are:

Ari Jaaksi, senior vice president of McAfee. He was once the head of Nokia’s Meego platform development and after that led the WebOS-development at HP.

It reflects poorly on Sailfish(Jolla) when the coverage is often only in Finnish, being based in Finland isn't a excuse. If the coverage must remain mostly non-English (which is silly), then Mandarin should take priority over Finnish.

Canonical's media stunt:
Quote:

But has the Chinese government already chosen its favourite operating system? A couple of weeks ago Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu OS, said that Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has selected Canonical’s Ubuntu as the basis of China’s official smart phone platform.

“That was a media stunt organized by Canonical”, says Saarnio. “Based on our information there has been no official selection of this sort and there would be no sense in [this kind of choice]. It was only a joint research project, China is happy to co-operate with everyone.”

One thing is certain. Chinese officials may not have chosen their favourite OS, but at this point they dislike the ones that come from US. The Chinese will be happy if the non-US smartphone operating systems gain market share. Finnish Jolla with its Chinese investors and partners is in good position.
No venture capitalists, please!
Quote:

The presales campaign of the first Jolla smart phone will begin soon. ”This is not about money”, says chairman Antti Saarnio.

”We couldn’t collect enough capital this way, but we want to start building the Jolla community. Jolla has over 20 000 active fans in services like Twitter and Facebook and this way we can let them participate. At the same time we can estimate the actual number of potential customers.”

To get more capital, Jolla will be issuing a convertible bond for institutional investors during June. Saarnio says that the size of this loan will be about 30 million euros. The investors will be able to change the loan into Jolla stocks if the company realizes its IPO as planned.

Jolla has gathered 11 million euros from private investors and Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. Antti Saarnio says that the company is not looking for traditional venture capital funding at this point.

He says that Finnish venture capital funds are so small that they could not scale up with Jolla and the global venture capitalists tend to control too much.

“Jolla needs peace”, he says.
New Board members:

Quote:

Jolla has named a new board of directors. From the Jolla team, Antti Saarnio will continue as chairman and company co-founder Stefano Mosconi as a board member.
New board members are:

Ari Jaaksi, senior vice president of McAfee. He was once the head of Nokia’s Meego platform development and after that led the WebOS-development at HP.
Steve Lau, an investor and the chairman and the CEO of the Chine Fortune Holding Limited. This company was the early mobile phone distributor for Nokia in China.
Boukerche Mohamed, entrepreneur and an investor that has a knowledge of Arabic and CIS-countries.

Really Interesting stuff there, Finally someone says they don't care about various devices atm and are concentrated with their own (also glad I haven't forgeten my italian :p )

Jussi stepped down as CEO to concentrate on "Software" and then Marc does the same.
All good, but where does that leave Juss?
I've heard some rumours that he's not actively working for Jolla atm. would love to get facts to either quash or verify that one.

I tried to get answers once but got vague responses (it was twitter after all), IIRC he's supposedly concentrating more on the "Sailfish alliance" side of things.
i.e. getting other companies involved with Sailfish. I think he was also on the board of the Sailfish alliance IIRC.

this was my first thought too, but only relaying the desperate lies... err... rumours that are flying around. :)

Given that Jolla have been emphasising Sailfish's ability to run on lower end hardware, the two dev devices would make great hardware platforms to finetune for lower specced handsets, that's for sure.

As I said, watertight ship, and since they've managed to leak nothing from a h/w perspective so far (including their partners), I'm happy to wait a few more weeks.

just hoping that the early adopter/pre order sign up will be international and not restricted to EU/Asia.....

OO, this is good news: :D

Quote:

Well, Jussi currently lists himself in LinkedIn as "Free Agent, Individual Contributor" (which doesn't seem like he's very busy with Jolla business), but it should be still board member in Jolla.
