maemo 6 dont know???????

AFAIK: Nokia has neither "confirmed nor denied" the availability of either for the N900.

To me that's a denial. However, I have hopes for MeeGo by the community... assuming it's as open as we hope.

Yup, to me they're either just staying mum for neferious purposes (getting more N900 sales) or they're just splitting development.

E.g. 3/4th of Maemo team work on the Meego and next Maemo/Meego device while 1/4th, try to fix Maemo 5 bugs and get Meego working on it when you have time.

just stop exaggerating already guys. MeeGo won't come any time soon so this is it. For who ever waiting and hoping to get it might end up very disappointing and for who doesn't give a SHIII* will not give a whore about it, when ever, what ever.!!

End of story.

Nokia has confirmed both Maego6 and Meego for the n900. As a community release.

Note: Nokia has stated Maego6 is Meego - same thing. Naming from Nokia to be decided.

Nokia also has confirmed current policy is there will be no Nokia supported version.

Leaving the door open on a change of policy suggests there are some in Nokia pushing for such a change, however unlike the earlier statements which are clear, reading anything into the possibility of a change is guesswork.

Community Release = Let the community work for free so we do not have to pay for it or support it in a timely manner.

For small apps/hacks/fixes its fine, but for major apps (i.e. proper sat nav) that will take ages if it even happens, so forget it unless the n900 is just a toy (which is fine for some users) to you.

The Nokia attitude taken here is clear - do least as possible for the lowest cost for the n900 at this point.

Makes sense for them as a company... in the short term

Can read Ari Jaanski's blog comments on the n900

https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?bl...57428363981643

Everyone just wants a clear answer on Meego, which Ari does not want to give. Everyone is just concerned about future support/apps.

There are many (and will be more) pissed off customers. This ambiguity (rightfully or wrongfully) has made things 100X worse.

I am not a anti Nokia troll, but Nokia's silence on these points is very bad. I would respect them more and consider buying future Nokia products if they would just BITE THE BULLET and COME OUT and state the obvious - no meego for n900.

There is a statement. effectively 'NO NEW OS FROM NOKIA ON ANY PHONE, PERIOD'. Clear and simple. Leaving the door open on this policy changing to me suggests someone, possibly even Ari, is fighting to change the policy. Trying to get a clearer answer than we have already, can only mean stopping anyone in Nokia lobbying for a change.

...snip...
.

I read this as: if there is interest in the community, the community will do it.
But this say's nothing about support from Nokia.

I have had my phones for an average of 3 years each.
This will be my most expensive phone yet.
I am hoping it will be able to fulfill all my requirements (many I know it already will) of a mobile-phone/computer.

I will not be looking to upgrade the OS if it works as expected.
For the next 3 years I am only hoping it will be stable, and any new application coming out in this time, I expect it to work on this device.

If all is not as I expected - I will be miserable, unhappy and discouraging other consumers to use it.
Just because it has a console, doesn't put a smile on my face the 100'th time around.

In this context for Nokia the OS (on any device) should be such that it will allow me to use as many applications ("out of the box") as possible. And for developers it should be such as to make it as easy as possible to make applicaions for the most possible devices.

With a unified, stable OS it is all possible.

Mind you... I'm a bit slow. In fact, I'm quite sure the members here already know that about me.

So the "official word" (please notice the quotes) is that MeeGo/Maemo 6 will be a community delivered OS, much like Mer/Fremantle was to be delivered some time ago and is still pending?

Not a swipe at STKeeps at all. Just a generic question so this weary mind can fully understand if that's what is really going on with the N900 and the N810.

As much as I love my n900... I should have bought the Droid or waited for a good snapdragon or a9 android phone with physical keyboard...
The Maemo5 sandbox like experience is great but god dammit Nokia should SUPPORT the phone for future operating systems and FINISH Maemo5's missing features (flash 10 anyone?)... Them stating the community will finish it is absolutely ********. The community should be given an opportunity to IMPROVE and bring new ideas/concepts/programs to the game... Not finish the job of a COMPANY. A Community should create and improve... Not complete and finish...

There is no official word yet. You can expect to hear it from someone official like Peter or Ari. Anything else is just a rumor.

The only thing we know is official is that IF Nokia chooses not to bring Meego to the N900 then the community will port it themselves.
