This is nothing new.

Going on Symbian Experience Nokia always take about a week to release the CV firmware for the UK.

Also as a warning if this is anything like symbian firmware releases then it will be up to Vodafone to download, bastardise and then test and release the firmware which could take anything from a couple of weeks till a month.

My money will be ok the UK CV code be updated first then this thread getting filled with whining Vodafone users.

Nothing for me yet in UK, hopefully will be some point this evening.

I cannot see Vodafone having any hand in this as my phone has nothing to do with them despite being on their network, they can't slap their branded stuff onto it.

Re: New N900 firmware 3.2010.02-8 released today (16 Feb)

I too am waiting for UK firmware and frankly am sick of seeing other people in the same situation being called trolls, whiners etc.

We paid the same (if not more) money as everyone else did for their devices so why should we expect any less than the prompt delivery of the firmware that everyone else has had?

As ever Nokia refuse to provide any information on the process or why there is a delay so with no information, no timeframe and no good reason for the delay, of course people are going be frustrated.

mine is through voda and from a voda store, apart from the 205 firmware code there is no other branding.

Yep, usually they put lots of crap on like the N95 I had which was terrible for battery life until I debranded it.

Apart from the APN details I can't see any branding at all even on the hardware there are no badges.

Here's a bit of wild and woolly speculation. Jusy 'cos I like starting rumours. There's a pic floating on twitter of an 'iplayer app' for the BBC. And we all know that BBC iplayer services are only available to bona fide Brits who pay their licence fee.

Ergo it's perfectly obvious that the UK version is being delayed by a shiney new iplayer app, and they can't publish it as Spencer Kelly won't let them release the iplayer component until it can make him look sensible. Which means a looong wait... :p

Hey, if they're going to keep me hanging on like this, I'm going to get wilder and woollier in my speculations, right?

flash 10.1 would resolve this issue. would also allow tvcatchup( basically freeview) to work also.

Vodafone business told me that there was no branding by them when I asked a senior product advisor on the phone. He told me that the updates should come without delay as they were not being altered by Vodafone.

I guess he could have been wrong but given his position that seems unlikely.

Its not so much what they put on their as to what they take off and disable.

Vodafone Disabled the ability to set MP3 files as ringtones on the Nokia 6630. Vodafone denied this but coincidently their own ringtones sold on their site were MP4 (which worked fine). Every other variant allowed MP3s fine.

They have also been known to disable Skype and other features that riveled their own.

yes this had to be stopped as it was illegal to do so. blocking services that nokia provide in there handsets is illegal. i seem to recall orange tried this with the n95 by blocking voip

You should also check that you've not (at some point) uninstalled the core update file. In X Terminal, run:
Code:

dpkg -l "mp-fremantle-*"
If it's marked as "un" then you'll need to re-install the package (should be mp-fremantle-generic-pr for Europe I think).

i did an "apt-get install mp-fremantle-generic-pr" which seems
to solve the issue i had. version is now: 3.2010.02-08. thanx.

Illegal? I find this somewhat hard to believe. For instance Orange are the only operator to support ALS in the UK - does that mean the other operators are breaking the law by disabling this feature in their phones? Do you have a reference for this law?

sorry i dont. i do recall customers taking back there handsets and having the restriction lifted. Think it was mentioned in one of the symbian forums.

Re: New N900 firmware 3.2010.02-8 released today (16 Feb)

bbc iplayer already works(in a way). Through the web gizmo. just go to bbc, look for something where you can click watch now or listen again, and you can watch stuff on it. looks stuttery and lags at first, but just pause it then click open in new window icon and it works perfectly. I managed to watch QI last week about 30 mins after it was on live. It also works for listening to the bbc radio listen again things.

On another note I was about to flash my n900, when I saw there wa an update looming, to clear out the rootfs of any stray extras -devel files that might be on there. (I am convinced, even though I have un-installed, that there are still files on there that haven't gone). So now I will wait and see what happens with the update. ..... I am right in thinking that flashing will basically wipe rootfs, then start from scratch installing the firmware, leaving only thaat on there? Then it's a caase of installing whatever you want.
I will definitely then make a restore point before dabbling in testing and devel again.

Not exactly, no. The update is dependent on the regional variant of the firmware you're using, and which of the Akamai server farms you're connecting to to download updates. You'll be directed to the most local one based on IP address, and updates can be pushed out to the server farms on a regional basis.

Guys, you don't get it. Yesterday, we blamed Vodafone. Today it's the turn of the BBC. Tomorrow will be Gordon Brown, and Friday, in a moment of nostalgia for Wake-Up-to-Wogan we will blame the Russians. Over the weekend, it'll be the Archbishop of Canterbury. If we're still waiting next week, there'll be a whole new schedule including migrant workers, daily mail readers and Amy Winehouse. Keep checking this thread to see who you should be blaming. ;)

Seriously, it could be days. Just Keep Calm and Carry On.

UK N900 user here (obtained through Nokia UK) who flashed global 1.1. I was going to wait for UK 1.1.1 and flash that but after my N900 rebooted twice this morning whilst listening to music & trying another app at the same time I thought I'd update.

Done an OTA to global 1.1.1. Got the operation failed message a few times during initial install, but the device has started up fine after that. Some comments on features for me that others have experienced problems with:

Flash - working fine
Scrolling - seems faster
Battery life - too early to tell
Music/Videos - playing fine
Speed with media player running - quicker but also seemingly a little jerky
