https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-o...67e1687d8d.jpg Now 8 months later here they are http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php...1&d=1423246242 Just judging from the picture the, the whole thing looks have about 100x more build quality than I would have ever expected. So glad that I was part I funding this. The Maemo/Meego/Jolla community has provide me with so much software goodies over the years, but hardware always adds logarithmicly more difficulties into the equation. That Dirk, Kimmo and Andrew are actually able to pull this one off.. … it just leaves me utterly impressed. My miniature penis basks in the warm glow radiated by the enormous balls of the amazing trio. Great job guys. |

New PCBs and domesheets waiting on my arrival!
PCB is perfect, domesheet has some small issues (but just testbatch, co biggie) https://dl.dropbox.com/s/aijjpsnnumb...2011.44.19.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/s/tzhap6d18gl...2011.44.34.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/s/5c8z4lohc4l...2011.44.45.jpg |
Re: TOHKBD rev2
Hi dirkvl, is jolla's discount code is still available if I pre-order one in kickstarter?
|
Re: TOHKBD rev2
btw, first post waiting to be edited with actual information ;)

- no, you can not order on kickstarter (but you can here) |
Re: TOHKBD rev2
- Lastu backplates ordered, will have this engraving for those that selected
- 15k worth of keyboard casings ordered, should have 95% of all printed parts when that is in - assembling a few of the latest keyboard pcb tomorrow to check for final order of 1500+ pieces (already 300 here) - remaking domesheet design this week - building rig for easy contact pad soldering on toh-cover pcb etc etc |
Re: TOHKBD rev2
Great progress!
This touch screen typing experience thing has pushed me so far over the edge that I've glued an iPhone bluetooth keyboard to my TOH: http://i.imgur.com/6gMmszw.jpg While it slides, it blocks the camera flash, only works in native Salfish apps, is slow to wake up, lacks ÅÄÖ and is monstrously ugly. TOHKBD is sure facing some serious competition here! :D EDIT: Also, charging led seems to stay on after charging now, and the area around the USB port feels terribly hot too. I think I'm taking this off my phone. |

Re: TOHKBD rev2
Thanks for the update!
I know that it probably isn't the final iteration, but how's the typing experience on this? I was relieved to hear the clicking sound, but still worry if it isn't too hard to press individual keys (because I could type much faster on the N900 than you do in this video ;) ). |

Re: TOHKBD rev2
Great look! Good work!
Any chance to get the onscreen keyboard in fingerterm mode hidden as well? We can see it's hidden as promided in app mode already... Would mean we could dream of midnight commander use with real keyboard and fullscreen ;-) Wonderful so far!!! |

That being said, there is little I can do to change the clicking sound in the end and there have been little/no voices stating their opinion about this, so at this point it is not on the priority list. We will see. |
Re: TOHKBD rev2
I know it is too late (for the reasons mentionned above), but let's elaborate on the matter just for the sake of debating! No loud clicking sound is always the best in my opinion: hardware keyboards are *also* to be used in places where being quiet is prefered, like meetings, theaters, or just quiet places of any kind. That makes a lot of situations where quiet keyboard is easier to use and where loud keyboard is terrible. Clicky feel is what is important. N900's keyboard does make a sound for every click, but very quietly, yet the clicky feeling is very noticeable; winner. There are some very loud phone keyboards, like the Bluetooth one I purchased in the hope of atatching it to my N9 someday (which I never did), and it was way too noisy for being used during a meeting; loser.
However, I seem to remember the clicking sounds have been discussed at some point, a very long while back, probably in the thread about the prototype tohkbd1. Not quite sure though. |
Re: TOHKBD rev2
I disagree.
The clicking sound is what makes the difference between this http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/revie...landscape2.jpg and this http://www.videoconverterfactory.com...n900-black.jpg Of course, I don't mean any cheap material clicking, but the domesheet clicks. In the first case (N93i, no clicking), one couldn't be sure which key (if any) was pressed and which keys were pressed accidentally in the meanwhile. Then of course, I am worried that it is going to be too hard to press like here (louder clicking sound and silicone keys): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...8c/HP_Veer.png I have used all three - N93i and HP Veer are on the opposite sides of the spectrum and N900 is the best one in the middle, but I would still take Veer's keyboard over the N93i's any time. EDIT: The reason why I'm mentioning it that from some videos, I had an impression that the TOHKBD1 was closer to the N93i example, but I may be wrong. |
Re: TOHKBD rev2
It's funny that you disagree although we both mention the N900 keyboard as a reference of what a good keyboard is. :D I guess we just have not the same thresholds in mind about what is too noisy and what is not. To me, the N900 keyboard is not loud, 'cause I compare it with the very loud Bluetooth keyboard I bought for the N9. Too loud to be used in quiet places.
The N900 has a very soft click sound, yet a very noticeable clicky tactile feeling when you type on it. That's what make the typing experience better in my opinion, i.e., whether the right key was pressed and whether any keys were pressed accidentally. Not the sound, although a soft sound like the N900's one does help too. |
Re: TOHKBD rev2
we will see, opinions are noted and agreed to.
further discussion is useless to me, as there is little i can do about it and i dont even know the how it will be in the end. |
Re: TOHKBD rev2
I guess the device itself could (optionally) provide similar audible feedback to the one it provides for the virtual keyboard ? :)
That would solve the issue of the keyboard being (too) silent for some users. :) |
Re: TOHKBD rev2
I think that regardless of the sound, the feel is the most important factor. The resistance needs to be low so that you can type quickly, but at the same time it should have a distinct 'clicky' feeling. As long as the general resistance is low, a small mid-point reduction in the resistance ought to be enough to create the clicky feeling.
Hmmm, I might have overstated there: The *most* important factor is having a functional, working keyboard! :-) |
Re: TOHKBD rev2
Yes, I think that it was the misunderstanding - what is most important is the feeling. But since I can't really feel it through video, the clicking sound was a nice indicator. I don't care about the sounds of clicking as long as my fingers have a good feedback from the keys pressed.
