lucas777: try running the icon with the red swirl, "Debian chroot", and then post a screenshot (or a copy and paste of the text to the browser) of the output.

It says "Component registries might be corrupted. You are upgrading from a version which might have corrupted service/components". It says to check some rdb files (I'm really over my head now!) and goes on and finally says Try cleanly reinstalling the packages and/or using a clean user profile. I had downloaded your newest image hoping to upgrade the OO. Should I try uninstalling Debian and then installing from scratch again? Any clue? |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
mscion: Yes, I got that "component registries might be corrupted" warning, too. But it is just a warning, choose OK and let it continue.

to work. Something that was also missing before, OO calc which sets up spread sheets for data analysis, appears to be working. I think there is an improvement in performance. For comparison, when starting up writer from LXDE the times were (within a second or two) ubuntu 3.1 90s OO.o2.4 40s OO.o3.1 60s (the current downloaded version) OO.o3.2 40s (upgraded version) So the upgraded version starts up about as fast as the older 2.4 but with more features. Thanks for everyones help! Now my next question. Is OOlatex available? |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
I tried OOO3.2 on v3d but it crashes on the tools/options menu, so beware, better wait for a stable version and stay on 3.1.

it is premature to consider this version as other than for testing. If you can actually use it all the better! |

However, when I went back to the Desktop folder location where you see the Debian icons, lo and behold I noticed a Synaptic icon...clicked it and Voila! Synaptic opened up and I download and installed some apps... HTH, Mark |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
ArchiMark: You're going to have to enable (remove the #) the "lenny" repository in /etc/apt/sources.list and try again. There may be some fallout when you begin upgrading such fundamental components.
Could those having problems with synaptic please open a terminal and type Code:
sudo debian synaptic |

I found that I can get Synaptic to open if I do the following in LXDE terminal: Code:

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
I also found that in v3d I cannot start synaptic from the LXDE menu. It does however start when launched from its (Maemo) application icon.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
Warning: Possible Silly Question....
OK, just wondering....if I see an app that's available for Debian on x86 PC's, how difficult/much work is it for a developer if I ask them to provide (recompile?..) a version that would run on our lil' N900?? Would like to know how silly or not this question is before I pose it to some developers of some commercial apps that do have linux versions..... Thanks, Mark |

However, I'm thinking of some commercial apps that are not included in Debian distribution.... For example, ThinkingRock http://www.trgtd.com.au, the GTD app is available for linux, but it's a non-free app. Although, there is a light version, that is free... Quote:

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
ArchiMark: Java apps should run in Easy Debian; try
Code:
java -jar appname.jar |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
Hi, sorry if it sounds like noob questions, but i can't seem to install the image file,
I have a bad internet connection so i DL it via PC and move it to main folder (N900) Now when i run the debtimage install, it always asks for internet connection and trying to download the image again.. And this causing duplicate images in the main folder.. Did i move the image in the right folder? Edit : So if i extract the image manually in the pC, where should i put them? in the main folder as well? |

Well, decided to take a look at the install instructions for linux and just executed the script in terminal: Code:
sh tr Very cool to see this app running on this lil' bad boy.... :D Quote:
If only we could use a USB Flash drive, I could easily move the data file between my 3 devices..... Here's a few photos for you.... http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/r...30-N900-TR.jpg http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/r...29-N900-TR.jpg |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
I got another question, if i unpack the image using winzip on my PC, then in which N900 folder should i put the unpacked files?
the process on the phone taking a little too long and i need to use my phone .. thanks |

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
Plug the N900 into your PC and put the image in the "Nokia N900" folder. That corresponds to "MyDocs" on the N900.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
thanks guys..
This is interesting, i can see the potential of this phone now, it's like a real computer, where we can choose the OS.. awesome :) So maybe someday there would be a way to boot Windows mobile 7 or Symbian^3? So the calc app is not working yet? I was hoping i could find an excel editor.. About Iceweasel, i think Microdb is better right? Is there any other useful apps in debian that can't be found in maemo? Edit : i saw some ppl mention gnumeric, is it as good as calc? how do i install it? |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
calc for me works fine i upgraded the office packages to the latest one open office3.2

Speaking of shortcut, how do i make a gnumeric shortcut from debian? You know just like Openoffice shortcut, so that i don't have to login to debian everytime i want to use it? |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages#search_packages Or you can use the synaptic pkg mg that came with the easy debian install. It's a bit slow but useable. e: As usual install apps at your own risk. |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
Edit : Figured it out, just need a little bit help
I understand that to create a desktop shortcut of gnumeric i have to put gnumeric.desktop file like this Quote:
/home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon Question is, i can't find the folder on Mass Storage mode, is it hidden or something? Also where do i put the icon image files? I assume it's not available yet in the debian? |

Icon images can either be placed in the standard Maemo location, for example /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/ or likewise in the analogous directory in /home/user/.local. Since those directories won't exist, create them at the first such installation by Code:
mkdir -p /home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon You will have to reboot in order to see your new app icon appear in the application manager. |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
Continuing my testing....I managed to get Task app compiled on my N900 in Easy Debian using gcc/g++.....works great....
Task is open source task management app.... http://taskwarrior.org/projects/show/taskwarrior Here's a few pics for fun....first 2 pics show colors available to use in app and then last pic is of Task app with ToDo list (sorry for bad quality of pic.) http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/r...0-Task-web.jpg http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/r...0-Task-web.jpg http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/r...0-Task-web.jpg |

So if i move the gnumeric.desktop file onto "N900" folder What should i type in X-terminal to remove them to hildon folder? I tried to use this code in X-terminal but it does nothing Code:
mkdir -p /home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon Oh and about OOCalc, i might've closed it because it took too long to start, i tried it again and it works :p |

Code:
apt-get install openoffice.org-style-crystal openoffice.org-style-galaxy openoffice.org-style-hicontrast openoffice.org-style-tango openoffice.org-emailmerge As to startup speed, I now get slightly above 1 minute when launched the first time, and when repeated around 45 sec. (time until the cursor appears in oowriter). With 3.1 it remained around 1 minute. EDIT: The timings were for debbie. Curiously, in LXDE I get lower values - sometimes just 30 secs for repeated launches of oowriter. EDIT2: @qole, what about securing a version of all OO3.2 armel packages in sid in case it gets again withdrawn or broken in the next versions? |

deny_winarto:
That "cannot preserve ownership" message happens when you copy something TO /home/user/MyDocs, not from there. Rebhana told you to copy it from MyDocs to the new folders. You won't see the new folders on your PC. You have to copy them to your MyDocs folder from the PC, then move them from the MyDocs folder to your home folder on the N900; that's why rebhana told you to move them with the mv command. Make sure you are doing exactly what rebhana instructed you to do. |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
hello everyone,
I am a proud owner of N900 for more than 3months and lurking this website from 6months. I am a newbie in linux and learning new things everyday. I installed easy debian and trying to install sopcast player, which is asking for two dependencies( ia32-libs and lib32stdc++5). After some investigation, I came to know that these dependencies are available only for amd64 and ia64 processors. If that is the case, is there any other way to install this app on arm. Please help me. I will provide the links if anyone are interested. Regards |

Yes, the gnumeric.desktop file is moved and no longer in MyDocs directory, but i don't see the shortcut in the app list.. So maybe something's wrong with my code :( I ended up installing the gnumeric port for N800, using the method here.. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=41920 It's faster anyway right? But thanks for the help guys :) Is there anyway to speed up the easydebian? And also do you know how many MB easy debian need in rootfs? |
