I usually use apt-get from the command line, but I also tried synaptic and it does work, however you need to be somewhat patient as it is rather slow. So I prefer searching for packages on the web pages of Debian and installing from the command line.

lucas777: try running the icon with the red swirl, "Debian chroot", and then post a screenshot (or a copy and paste of the text to the browser) of the output.

apt-get update
apt-get install --no-install-recommends openoffice.org-writer openoffice.org-impress openoffice.org-calc

Doesn't seem faster, and the menus changed from icons to text, but it works fine...

mscion: tap-and-hold should work as right-click for GTK and Gnome apps. KDE apps don't have a right-click hack in Easy Debian.

Hi qole, I tried following these directions but I get an error concerning Package configuration.

It says "Component registries might be corrupted. You are upgrading from a version which might have corrupted service/components". It says to check some rdb files (I'm really over my head now!) and goes on and finally says Try cleanly reinstalling the packages and/or using a clean user profile.

I had downloaded your newest image hoping to upgrade the OO. Should I try uninstalling Debian and then installing from scratch again? Any clue?

Looks pretty good. From LXDE I ran writer and got the equation editor
to work. Something that was also missing before, OO calc which sets up spread sheets for data analysis, appears to be working.

I think there is an improvement in performance.
For comparison, when starting up writer from LXDE the times were
(within a second or two)

ubuntu 3.1 90s
OO.o2.4 40s
OO.o3.1 60s (the current downloaded version)
OO.o3.2 40s (upgraded version)

So the upgraded version starts up about as fast as the older 2.4
but with more features.

Thanks for everyones help!

Now my next question. Is OOlatex available?

I tried OOO3.2 on v3d but it crashes on the tools/options menu, so beware, better wait for a stable version and stay on 3.1.

hi debernardis I tried the tools/options menu once in writer and played around some. It did not crash for me although I probably did not duplicate your steps once selecting option. (If you recall your steps let me know and I will try it) There are probably several good reasons why this version is not considered stable so I agree that
it is premature to consider this version as other than for testing. If you can actually use it all the better!

FWIW, lucas, I just installed Easy Debian on my new N900 and it works, but like you, nothing happens when I clicked on Synaptic in the menu...

However, when I went back to the Desktop folder location where you see the Debian icons, lo and behold I noticed a Synaptic icon...clicked it and Voila! Synaptic opened up and I download and installed some apps...

ArchiMark: You're going to have to enable (remove the #) the "lenny" repository in /etc/apt/sources.list and try again. There may be some fallout when you begin upgrading such fundamental components.

Could those having problems with synaptic please open a terminal and type
Code:

sudo debian synaptic
and post the output here?

Here's what I get, doing this from LXDE Terminal:

Code:

$ sudo debian synaptic
sudo: debian: command not found

UPDATE

I found that I can get Synaptic to open if I do the following in LXDE terminal:

Code:

$ sudo ./usr/sbin/synaptic
Thanks!

I also found that in v3d I cannot start synaptic from the LXDE menu. It does however start when launched from its (Maemo) application icon.

Warning: Possible Silly Question....

OK, just wondering....if I see an app that's available for Debian on x86 PC's, how difficult/much work is it for a developer if I ask them to provide (recompile?..) a version that would run on our lil' N900??

Would like to know how silly or not this question is before I pose it to some developers of some commercial apps that do have linux versions.....

Thanks,

Mark

Virtually all applications in the Debian distribution come precompiled for the armel architecture. If for some reason they aren't, like wine, chances are that it is not possible at all to just recompile for armel.

Thanks for your input, rebhana....understand your point...

However, I'm thinking of some commercial apps that are not included in Debian distribution....

For example, ThinkingRock http://www.trgtd.com.au, the GTD app is available for linux, but it's a non-free app.

Although, there is a light version, that is free...

Quote:

ThinkingRock - Platform requirements

Thinking Rock is a pure Java application and should run on any platform with a correct Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

For Mac and Linux you will need JRE version 1.5.0 or later. For MS Windows you will need JRE version 1.6.0 or later.

For Mac you will also need Mac OS 10.4 or later.

TR has been tested on Linux (Fedora 4), Mac OS X (10.5.5), Windows (XP) and Windows Vista.

Hi, sorry if it sounds like noob questions, but i can't seem to install the image file,
I have a bad internet connection so i DL it via PC and move it to main folder (N900)
Now when i run the debtimage install, it always asks for internet connection and trying to download the image again..

And this causing duplicate images in the main folder..

Did i move the image in the right folder?

Edit : So if i extract the image manually in the pC, where should i put them? in the main folder as well?

It is impossible to get "duplicate images" so maybe you're downloading the wrong image. Make sure you're grabbing this one:

debian-m5-v3d.img.ext2.lzma

(EDIT: You can unzip it on your computer with 7zip)

Plug the N900 into your PC and put the image in the "Nokia N900" folder. That corresponds to "MyDocs" on the N900.

thanks guys..

This is interesting, i can see the potential of this phone now, it's like a real computer, where we can choose the OS.. awesome :)
So maybe someday there would be a way to boot Windows mobile 7 or Symbian^3?

So the calc app is not working yet? I was hoping i could find an excel editor..
About Iceweasel, i think Microdb is better right?
Is there any other useful apps in debian that can't be found in maemo?

Edit : i saw some ppl mention gnumeric, is it as good as calc? how do i install it?

Yea, IDK why but mine only works from the openoffice shortcut...

Speaking of shortcut, how do i make a gnumeric shortcut from debian? You know just like Openoffice shortcut, so that i don't have to login to debian everytime i want to use it?

You can search for .deb packages here:
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages#search_packages

Or you can use the synaptic pkg mg that came with the easy debian install. It's a bit slow but useable.

e: As usual install apps at your own risk.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

Edit : Figured it out, just need a little bit help

I understand that to create a desktop shortcut of gnumeric i have to put gnumeric.desktop file like this

Quote:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=gnumeric
Icon=gnumeric
Exec=debbie gnumeric
Type=Application
In here :
/home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon
Question is, i can't find the folder on Mass Storage mode, is it hidden or something?
Also where do i put the icon image files? I assume it's not available yet in the debian?

Why do you say that? OO calc does work for me, if somewhat sluggish. Gnumeric is a leaner alternative of course.

Through USB you can only access /home/user/MyDocs, so you would then have to move the file from XTerminal into this folder. (I myself use ssh for all transfers which doesn't have any limitations.)

Icon images can either be placed in the standard Maemo location, for example /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/ or likewise in the analogous directory in /home/user/.local. Since those directories won't exist, create them at the first such installation by
Code:

mkdir -p /home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon
mkdir -p /home/user/.local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/

Your .desktop file goes into the first folder, and some appropriate icon file (.png) in the second. If you don't find any png file in the Debian package, you can of course reuse or edit existing ones.

You will have to reboot in order to see your new app icon appear in the application manager.

So if i move the gnumeric.desktop file onto "N900" folder

I have now also found time to try out OO 3.2. The missing icons are due to openoffice.org-style-* files that were not upgraded by the above commands. To upgrade all the other openoffice.org packages that are already installed one additionally needs
Code:

apt-get install openoffice.org-style-crystal openoffice.org-style-galaxy openoffice.org-style-hicontrast openoffice.org-style-tango openoffice.org-emailmerge
(I guess only galaxy is really needed to get the icons back in the standard configuration.)
As to startup speed, I now get slightly above 1 minute when launched the first time, and when repeated around 45 sec. (time until the cursor appears in oowriter). With 3.1 it remained around 1 minute.

EDIT: The timings were for debbie. Curiously, in LXDE I get lower values - sometimes just 30 secs for repeated launches of oowriter.

EDIT2: @qole, what about securing a version of all OO3.2 armel packages in sid in case it gets again withdrawn or broken in the next versions?

These two commands create the folders where your files should then be moved into. If you have transferred your gnumeric.desktop file by USB, it will be in /home/user/MyDocs. To move it in XTerminal, you can then do (the following is one line):
Code:

mv /home/user/MyDocs/gnumeric.desktop /home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon/
Similarly, if you have found a nice icon that would have to go into the second directory.

Hmm.. it says "cannot preserve ownership of /home/user/MyDocs/gnumeric.desktop" : Operation not permitted

And after i tried these
Code:

mkdir -p /home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon
mkdir -p /home/user/.local/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/

None of those folders show up when i plug it to PC...
I've enabled "show hidden folder" on my W7 so it should show up if it's hidden... Did i miss something here?

That "cannot preserve ownership" message happens when you copy something TO /home/user/MyDocs, not from there. Rebhana told you to copy it from MyDocs to the new folders.

You won't see the new folders on your PC. You have to copy them to your MyDocs folder from the PC, then move them from the MyDocs folder to your home folder on the N900; that's why rebhana told you to move them with the mv command.

Make sure you are doing exactly what rebhana instructed you to do.

hello everyone,
I am a proud owner of N900 for more than 3months and lurking this website from 6months.
I am a newbie in linux and learning new things everyday.
I installed easy debian and trying to install sopcast player, which is asking for two dependencies( ia32-libs and lib32stdc++5). After some investigation, I came to know that these dependencies are available only for amd64 and ia64 processors. If that is the case, is there any other way to install this app on arm.
Please help me.
I will provide the links if anyone are interested.

I guess deny_winarto did exactly what I told him, and everything should actually be in place. I checked that you indeed get the "cannot preserve ownership" message when you move from /home/user/MyDocs, however it is only a warning - it does correctly move the file despite the "operation not permitted" (that refers only to the fact that the ownership is modified). If you copy (cp) instead of move (mv), you don't get the warning, but either should be fine. It should now work for you, deny_winarto, doesn't it?

Ermm, actually no,
Yes, the gnumeric.desktop file is moved and no longer in MyDocs directory, but i don't see the shortcut in the app list..
So maybe something's wrong with my code :(

I ended up installing the gnumeric port for N800, using the method here..

It's faster anyway right? But thanks for the help guys :)
Is there anyway to speed up the easydebian?
And also do you know how many MB easy debian need in rootfs?
