Yikes, you guys are like are flock of piranhas!! :D Since I threw in the bait last night you've chewed it up and 9 pages later (while I was sleeping no less!) we know a LOT more about Diablo. Awesome work.

Is there any way to tar this up similar to KDE and boot it from one of the cards or is there actual flashing to the internal flash that needs to be done also?

I think I did see several posts back that one of you had it set up as a secondary boot.

Sigh.... *another* interruption , gotta go now..... maybe by the time I actually get more time to try this the files will be gone.

Perhaps, but to what end? It's more productive for you to just upgrade yourself. . . .

Someone could take a clean chinook flash, diabolize it, tar it up, and get their server hammered by everyone downloading it and untarring it on their mmcs, while complaining loudly and bitterly because there's no .deb. And, a few, failing, and complaining ever louder and bitterer.

Why does it sound better to update it yourself...

Steps (as I understand it):
  1. Remove any of
    • modest
    • powerlaunch
    • spellchecker browser add-on
which is installed. (Modest is now default, you can try reinstalling powerlaunch and spellchecker when you're done.)
  2. Edit the sources list as suggested here.
  3. Follow mvo's instructions, summary:

    • Run apt-get install osso-software-version-rx34-unlocked in a shell that doesn’t die when the network goes down.
    • Make some coffee, walk the dogs, plant a tree.
    • File bugs.

Anyone who can't do that probably wouldn't succeed with a tarred rootfs, either.

The single biggest sticking point is probably running out of space during the install. As, such, you need to make sure that the cache is on a card (something like ln -s /media/mmc1/var/cache/apt/archives /var/cache/apt/archives will work nicely) and delete any extraneous stuff floating around (like the documentation pdfs and bundled media files). If you run out of space, clearing some up then running apt-get -f install should get you back on track, though. Just beware that the network interfaces go down during the upgrade.

My personal recommendation is to just start with a fresh install and upgrade from that. It'll make things much easier than pounding your head against the wall trying to get a non-fresh install upgraded. Also, be sure to clone maemo Extras and change the distribution to "Chinook" so you can have access to Chinook Extras (since Diablo Extras is a little on the small side at the moment).

This kind of first recovery is easy and should be done at all costs, 'cause if you restart and face an unbootable system, things get kinda complicated for the average joe.

Doing it like KDE is out. All KDE does is mount a file containing an /usr/local with kde files and sets it as a path. Try mounting the entire system and it wont be nice.

Thank you :). Glad to be here!

What I did to install was reflash and make the symlink from archives to my memory card. I then used DTA on the computer to download the packages (more reliable) and placed them in the archives folder.
I then just did apt-get install osso-software-version-rx34-unlocked and waited for it to install as it needed no dodgy downloading :)

Also, to make it clear - its very useful to have a dual boot set up - you can always run the other install if the things get too messy :)

Re: What do we know about Diablo (Maemo 4.1) ?

I understand your point and I don't want to provoke a debate, but a lot of people have succeeded installing KDE from a tarball. I also understand it could be a valuable learning experience too, but some people don't have linux installed to run the flasher from, or may not want to risk bricking their IT, or may be able to contribute some other valuable information without having to go thru this. I know there are always a subset of people that are never satisfied with whatever they get, but anyway.... It just might help a few extra people enjoy the fun.

As soon as I can get enough uninterrupted time to play with this I not the least bit incapable of doing the upgrade myself and still think you guys have done a outstanding job in less than 24 hours!
