After switching from my Droid3 to the Jolla a month ago, any keyboard will be heaven.
I type 3 times as slow, make many more errors and can't type while walking on an on-screen keyboard. Get me out of this hell Dirk! :D

I mean that using such superlatives could make your customers expect too much and encourage them to come back with complaints they would not have thought of otherwise.

I thought it was obvious but perhaps I was a tad too cryptic.

I have been wondering what does TOHKBD2 actually provide for text editing. I assume text input works great but how about editing? Can I use Shift + Arrow keys to select text for copy/cut?

If text selection works, which apps do support it?
- Email
- Messages
- Notes
- Native browser - currently it totally lacks text select actions
- Some other browser, e.g. Android Opera Classic

As a heavy user of vBulletin and phpBB forums I really hope TOHKBD2 makes text editing easier. Anyways - can't wait to get mine even if it only works for typing :)

Is the keyboards assembled as far as they can be without the keypads already? And when the keypads arrive how much assembly there is / how long it will take form the point of getting the keypads?

I really should organize all my applications in nice folders as you did. But I have like 7 pages. I'm not sure one life would be enough to achieve that.

(Thanks for the video! Can't wait. Just can't. Let's try not to think about that freaking keyboard.)

I have a different question. HtheB, how did you make that the icon of the folder contains icons of the apps from the folder (in the default, I can set only those few default rectangles/circles).

Patch manager + Launcher combined patch. Both installed from openrepos, there is a thread of patch manager.

I am new in this forum and have been following the TOHKBD/Jolla news for a long time . I am currently a blackberry 9900 user and is seriously thinking about purchasing a Jolla Phone.

Thanks for the video. In the clip you are using touch screen for some of the tasks like launching Apps, moveing to the next screen etc. I am wondering whether these tasks can be done using the keyboard (shortcuts/nav keys) once the final version of keyboard and assosiated software is released.

Thanks

Re: TOHKBD rev2

From my experience with Android, I know there no longer is a focus (in Android). It once existed, but was partially removed, partially not updated for a long time. So there is no way to highlight the app you want to start. And in places where it still exists, like with many on screen keyboards, it works unexpected. Apps not always support a hardware keyboard or always work in portrait mode, the focus starts invisible at random positions, moving the focus often does not go in the logical direction, etc.
In Android, physical keyboard support is a relic from the past, which probably explains why no one is making an Android phone with a keyboard any more. Android has become pointing device only.
So don't expect too much from android apps.

Jolla has always intended there to be a keyboard other half and even made changes to Sailfish for this specific keyboard. So I expect support to be a lot better, although it's hard to build keyboard support keyboard when no keyboard exits to test it with.

I don't know if it will work everywhere, as soon as the keyboard is available the support will improve for Sailfish OS and Sailfish apps. .

Unfortunately a standard usb keyboard/mouse does not seem to work on the Jolla. (apparently USB-OTG is not supported) So I can't easily check the current state.

On the bright side: The keyboard doesn't only do the things which already exists, it also adds some features. Like alt-tab to switch applications.

Message from Longsun, keypads are expected to ship in 1 month.

Please note:
- this is a complete guestimation not from me
- they need to travel half the globe before they are here
- then we need some time to assemble/ship
- assembling/shipping is logistic nightmare

All other parts will be ready waiting when they arrive. Will be assembled by nude virgins.

If I understand the board layout correctly there are two ground layers covering these areas. Don't these shield the antennas?

This was of course business talk for "FAAACCCKKK!! STUPID MISTAKE!! ALL BOARDS ARE USELESS" so I reordered all the boards without ground planes (and some other tweaks). They just arrived, heavy box.

The ability to admit and fix mistakes this way is why I like to do business with indie-developers rather than corp-machines!

The corp-way would have been "ship the rubbish, and switch only the boards for those individuals who take us to court and force us!"

I have a question about steal black backplate. Is it real steal or other metal? If so, have you check it won't affect phone?

I read that magnets should not make problems, but i started worrying about that backplate.

I like that you changed the board layouts. Otherwise I would have done it myself ;)

If you shared the redesign with us before ordering I would have had a look at it, though.

Same here, got my Jolla couple of weeks ago and after some initial quibbles, fell in love with Sailfish OS. Even though waiting for TOHKBD2 is painful, I am sure the TOHKBD2 team is doing a fantastic job to make it the best keyboard expericence. Kudos to the team and dirkvl ..

Re: TOHKBD rev2

Hope it'll be soon, my Jolla is starting to show serious signs of fatigue (the screen shows a thick yellowish pattern on one side). Would be way too frustrating to get my tohkbd2 (well, my 2 tohkbd2 :D) after my phone's death.

Dirkv, Kimmo, is it possible to unlock the Jolla with only one tap on the screen when the keyboard is open, like on the N900? I mean, no double tap, no lock screen, but rather app covers or, even better, last app used. Being back to the N900 currently (last Sailfish update went wrong and nothing works anymore, trying to find a fix before factory reset), I remember how useful and convenient it can be. For instance, today I used Sygic, and it was not set to keep screen on during navigation, so I had to wake the screen regularly. More complicated ways to wake it up or to restore Sygic would have been impossible to use. And that's just an example, the same applies for reading and so on.

Basically, if you have your keyboard open and the screen goes to sleep, then you have been interrupted in what you were doing (otherwise you would have closed the keyboard). So you don't want to double tap, go to lockscreen, swipe, find the right app cover among the others, and finally tap it, just to resume what you were doing before being interrupted. Since two days that I can resume this way, I've been amazed by how many times this can happen each day.

Perhaps a simpler way would be to execute a script that keeps display on when the keyboard is open.

That's great news (appreciate you giving an estimate too)!

Any idea how much time you think it will take to ship all of the kickstarter orders? I'm trying to work out when my funkyOH order might arrive, and I know it won't be shipped until all the rest are done.

Late to the party but the suspense is killing me already!

This is the first time I am doing this and I do not want to make people happy with a dead bird, but when I have more guestimations I will post them.

More daily and less official guestimations on #jollatohkbd IRC

Hi Dirk,

I'd like to preorder, but the shop says out of stock. Do you have an estimate when you will open that again?

Second question: I would be curious about some statistics on the project, especially how many people ordered which cover/backplate/keyboard color/layout - would be cool to have that while everybody is waiting for there keyboards to be assembled :)

Thank you for your great work!
Marcel
