LIke the Jolla 1, the N900 lacks the proper 3G bands to work with AT&T, and Ma Bell cut off 2G a couple years ago. T-Mobile maintains some 2G coverage till 2020, I think for data users like old-but-still-working embedded devices: lojack, bathroom scales, burglar alarms, etc. And T-Mo's 3G bands should still work with AT&T.

We switched over to T-Mobile. Now I've got up to 3G on the N900! Love it!

Hmm, sorry to be the bad guy:
But only as long as you do not switch on data connection and use it. Then you will need to carry a power bank with you...

Peter is being gentle..

Just make sure you DON'T have the n900 plugged into a wall outlet when you turn the data on...
If you do...
half of Europe may go dark ...
