As a long-time Zaurus user, I find kdepimpi and
the password manager "zsafe" indespensible.

Do you have any experience with porting Zaurus apps to the Nokia...or know of anyone who's ported kapi/kopi?

I have already built Qt 4.3.3 within Scratchbox, and Qtopia is next. This process makes me very aware that I am not
a very good software developer...while I it is just possible that I will be able
to get kdepimpi to recompile on the Nokia, I strongly doubt that I'll ever get to truely
porting them to use the Hildon environment.


I'd be extremely grateful for any help or suggestions that you have.

scroll down and find the 'patch-dirs' package.

Install it, it should work. Afterwards, you can also remove it.

FWIW, I tried to install the Gene Cash apps to OS2008 and they won't work. I even wrote off to the dev and asked for an update to OS2008... He replied that he didn't have plans of upgrading his N800 to the new OS yet. Maybe if more people requested the update?

A week ago, or so, I did ask him too.. If he replied to you 'not yet' I take it as a positive answer.

I tried this after some emails to Gene (patch-dirs) and it didn't work for me. I later got Calend to work OK after I re-flashed my n800; don't know why that made it work though. Even after the reflash, I couldn't get Info On Tap to work properly. It wouldn't save when creating a table (ever), so I wrote it off for now. I'm hoping maybe he'll fix it.

This is a very good option. The PIM apps built into the Garnet VM work well, except for alarms, which in my experience are buggy. If you don't need calendar alarms, this is a good solution.

I tried GPE Calendar and found it to be too buggy for me.

A KDE (QT) app can never be fully Hildon-ized, since Hildon is GTK+, unless the app is ported from QT to GTK. The best you can do with getting those apps on Maemo is a) just getting QT over, and putting up with them maybe looking/acting weird or b) ditching Maemo/hildon completely for a desktop KDE - I know there are folks who have done that.

There's certainly no technical reason that a QT app couldn't sit and interoperate relatively well in the Hildon Desktop, i.e. hidden, drop-down menus, proper theming etc.

It's just a question of whether it's worth it.
