Your theory about believing that if one could get anything free then there is nothing wrong in getting it for free makes me wonder...

Its partly their fault because they use this pathetic licensing scheme. However, you can always select from pool of MAC addresses which are assigned to other devices such as old 3Com NICs or whatever.
