Re: Is it worth getting a n810 now?
Just got an N810 yesterday, to sit alongside my 2 year old N800, as they are really cheap now, and I am really really impressed with it.
I know the hardware and OS are moreorless the same, but it feels a whole lot snappier than the 800. It also looks great and really cool and for the current price you cannot go far wrong. I got mine, partly for the keyboard (spending more time on chat, facebook, etc these days), partly for the GPS as I want to look at doing some mapping for OSM, and having a play with ecoach when I am on the bike. Also the N800 struggles running Mauku, Carman, Canola, and Map, or maemomapper all at once! |
Re: Is it worth getting a n810 now?
Yes yes its absolutely worth getting. I got mine just over a month ago (a real steal at £129 from play.com).
Like many others have already said, the screen is big and brilliant. Ever since I got this beauty, I've forgotten what my mono tasking, mono speaker iPod touch looks like . Web browsing can be faster but the screen estate makes it a joy - well compared to other smartphones tablets - 3.5 inches is not good enough for Web browsing IMHO. Briliant device. Its a shame that Nokia compromised on screen and keyboard in N900 - they should have just updated N810 hardware then added a phone to it. Oh well, I'm happy with my N810 and may even skip the N900 due to aforementioned limitations. Make the right choice. Cheers. :D |

I think I've talked about the screen already, up there ^ I still use my N800s a lot. They are really useful for so many things. |

I am surprised no one has mentioned the Archos 5 tablet in this thread.
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-12519_7-10353176-49.html I am personally in the market for a similar device. The Maemo OS appeals to my Linux side more than Android, but the specs on the Archos 5 tablet are just so much better, and it is still Linux after all. I would like to hear what is on the pipeline from Nokia as far as a similar device. That may sway me into waiting a little bit. Otherwise, I think Archos is the current best alternative for this type of devices. |

It's not like the N810 couldn't in theory be improved for better fingering (increase widget sizes, use fremantle style menus, kinetic panning instead of scrollbars everywhere), but that's unlikely to get done soon. OTOH, second hand N810's are going to be very cheap when N900's come about, and since you can use 3g data through your phone, N810 is not a bad purchase either. |

http://product.thinkfree.com/mobile/android What programs are available on the N810 for spreadsheets and docs? What about calendaring? I think I read somewhere that the N900 will eventually have some of the KOffice applications. That would be sweet. But, I doubt that they will ever be available for the N810. |
Re: Is it worth getting a n810 now?
The Archos tablets are not in the same price band as the N810 is at the minute (well here in the UK at least).
I've had my N810 for a week now, and although I have had an N800 for almost 2 years, I love the N810 more, and think it is unbeatable for the price. these are the reasons why... It is more compact than my N800 so it fits in my jacket/shirt/trouser pockets better. The keyboard is great, especially for things like Twitter, Facebook, etc and Xterm to my Mythtv box. I love the GPS (using a-gps) fast solid locks outdoors and in the car. Wayfinder although it feels old (and is!) works great. Maemo Mapper, Carman, OSM2Go, and ecoach are all great with GPS onboard. I love the look and feel of the thing, very up to the minute (2 years ago it must have seemed amazing!) I don't like the battery cover and the SD slot door though, both feel fiddly and horrid to me. I would have preferred a second card slot or more memory, but 16GB is fine and I can get most of the music I want on there, just learning not to be greedy! StKeeps' Mer and his teasers, and Andrew Blacks new Maemo5 lookalike theme will keep the N8x0s fresh for a long while yet. |
