Offtopic: I can't wait until the damn thing comes out just so everyone around here stops acting like they've been without coffee or cigarettes for a couple of days. :D

I won't ask you a third time to answer my initial question. I think I know the answer now anyway.

I asked him if there were hardware changes between the pre-production and production n900 models. He said yes, but they didn't have details on them yet. So I asked him specifically about USB host mode (if it would be in the production model), and after several minutes, he came back and said that it did not support it like the n8x0 models.
I then asked him if it was getting a digital compass. He then started talking about a media player, contacts, etc. I asked him if he though I was talking about the accelerometer. He said that there wasn't an "application" for a digital compass.

I don't think he knew what I was talking about--possibly on either front. He also might not know the differences between software and hardware changes. Did you guys have any luck?

I expected this, but was just trying to point out the irony of someone sometimes thinking they are talking to a direct source- verses quite the opposite.

Wow, I have been called a hick (ok with that one), a ba$tard, SOB, but NEVER a racist :(

Update:

Though you assert I am a racist, I thought I did:

Point is just because someone is speaking with "Nokia" or any company, does not mean you are getting a complete and accurate represention of the product and may not even be an on site sales or support rep. Almost every support company we have used at my past three companies has been in India, except one in Mexico.

Would you have felt the same if I had said a hick support place in the US?

Friends now :)

The irony is you are one of my favorite posters for information reference (unless there are other Tintins).

I don't know about Nokia outsourcing sales to Indian call-centers but a lot of N900 QA work is definitely being done in Bangalore.

Hardware is already locked in. This was pretty much clear at the Summit too. I think the Sales-guy was not savvy enough to understand the difference between usb-host-mode and usb-mass-storage-mode or digital-compass and gps.

14-day money-back gaurantee is great.

I have no idea why you keep re-iterate that there are call centers in India. There are call centers in Illinois, The Phillipines, Arizona, India, etc, etc. Some of them are outsourced and some of them are remote in-source.
If the sales rep he spoke with was a Nokia employee sitting in the Finnish HQ or if he was in Indianapolis he, to me, could had given the exact same answers as were posted here. Quality is not dependent on geographical location.
I was curious to hear why you thought he sounded like he was from India - as based on the accuracy/inaccuracy of the posts I sure wouldn't be able to make such an assumption.

English is not my native language (nor is it my second) but to still your southern heart I am neither (in regards to your previous post) liberal nor from India.

Sorry to the rest of you for the tangent/hi-jacking, I'll bow out now as it is getting very circular.

(Thanks for all the 'thanks' by the way).

You did it again! You typecast me as a southern who does not like libs or Indians :(

I love em' both, but looooove messing with libs ;) - I mean this in a nice way :)

I forgive you though, and bid you peace :)

Over and out!

Back to topic: I really think he equated compass with GPS- people seem to do that.

I see tmo is not immune to the veiled wafting of a race card.

The stereotype of an Indian callcenter is hilarious....blame Foamy the Squirrel ;)

The liberal baiting is a common theme for you, and I realize you are probably joking, but can we avoid that sort of thing? You'll notice 99.9% of the posters here do.

On topic...

Some of the improvements discussed here can be accomplished in software-- it's my understanding that a limited USB host mode is one.

And while last-minute hardware changes/corrections are abhored in production, they often become necessary evils. As a former product designer and QA I've dealt with enough to turn hair grey. Some were even with Nokia. ;)
