Re: How well does the N900 cope with a large music library?

I have 4,300 songs on mine and every now and then a stutter, but usually after I have added or deleted some songs and it was probably still updating while I was playing the song.

I think I have had four songs "stutter" for an instant out of about hundred or so I have paid attention to. I know this, since I tested favorite songs and albums that I am very famiar with. At least 100.

Moonbaby from Godsmack sounds real good on the N900:)

Re: How well does the N900 cope with a large music library?

I have like a million probs with the music player. Main problem is it doesn't recognise my playlists. they were created with winamp and something to do with paths. So I created with mediamonkey and transferred one playlist. It worked and I thought I had solved the problem. Checked the path and was more generic. Created more playlists with similar generic path but none worked.

Next major problem is for some reason my tags are messed up. Songs from compilation albums show Various Artists as song artist rather than specific song artist. No other device or music software has ever given me that problem.

Video playback is also not great. Stutters like hell for first 10 seconds or so.

Can you copy and paste a path from a playlist? If your using Windows what's likely happening is that the path will be using \ instead of /. Windows uses \ while Unix based systems (Linux, OSX, etc..) use /.

Thus regardless of what you do if the path is using \ then that's likely why the playlist is not working.

All album arts have been added same way to all my music in the device. They show no problems with Zune HD, 1G ipod touch and 5800XM.

Normally this kind thing happens when your album art has not been tagged correctly. In less strict devices the album art tag is ignored, so will show up. But devices that read the ID3 tag correctly will ignore if the tag is wrong. Album art can be tagged as cover.front, cover.back etc etc. if you have moved your music around a lot it might have all sorts of strange tagging.

put your tracks that you have problems with through a tagger like Media Monkey and you can see what is going on with your album art.

Are you syncing with iTunes?
I had the same problem, when I synced my Sony Walkman with iTunes via Salling Media Sync.

The solution is to open "Show info" on the song in iTunes, then uncheck "Part of a compilation" (my iTunes is in danish, so I don't know exactly what it's called in english).

PITA to do it for ALOT of songs though... :(

This is what notepad shows for one of my actual playlists (winamp created) with first song in playlist:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:185,Eazy-E - Only If You Want It
C:\Users\ejueyitchie\Music\Eazy-E\Unknown Album\01 Only If You Want It.mp3

This is what notepad shows for the same playlist I created using media monkey that worked for some reason:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:325,Eazy-E ft Roger - Eternal E
..\Eazy-E\Str8 Off tha Streetz of Muthaphu__in Com\15 Eternal E.mp3

And this is another playlist I created using media monkey which seems to have a similar path type as one above but this time doesn't work.

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:215,112 - Time to Let this Go
..\112\Unknown Album\Time to Let this Go.mp3

On my PC music is in folder:

C:\Users\ejueyitchie\My Music

On N900 it's in folder:

T900/Audio clips/Music

Have you got multiple Albums "Unknown" . This has caused me probs in the past where the media player cant decide which album it is

Re: How well does the N900 cope with a large music library?

Ok so the playlist paths are Windows oriented. The WinAmp one shouldn't work at all since the whole concept of C:\ is Windows only.

Though I don't know why one Media Monkey playlist would work and the other wouldn't (strange). I would think both wouldn't work. Do you know where the playlist is stored after transfered to the tablet? If so could you open it up in either using the notes application (or whatever it's called in the n900) or you can open it in the terminal (if it comes with vi) to see if the path is using \ or /?

E.g. If the playlist for..Eazy-E was located in
T900/Audio clips/Music/Eazy-E

Then you would type into the terminal

cd /T900/Audio clips/Music/Eazy-E (to change the directory to Easy-E)

ls (to list all files in the terminal)

vi NAMEOFPLAYLIST (to open up the playlist in the vi text editor)

Note with the terminal you don't have to type in the entire filename, just type in the first few letters and press tab for autocompletion. Of course if you can also open it up with notes.

If the path shown is say
Quote:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:325,Eazy-E ft Roger - Eternal E
..\Eazy-E\Str8 Off tha Streetz of Muthaphu__in Com\15 Eternal E.mp3
Then theoretically a find and replace to replace \ with / will solve the problem assuming that the playlist is then located in the correct folder (since ...\ means it has to be located relatively near that folder). I'm just using Easy-E as an example since your other example just says 112 for what the artist would be.

Edit: I also don't know why other people don't have this problem, I would imagine if this were the issue then everyone would have the problem of the paths not being right...

I tried mine for about a week with only 30 or so albums. No problems in the slightest.

Then a couple of days ago I filled the internal and SD memory to about 3,000 songs. Now, if I am doing ANYTHING in the background, chances are the song will stutter. It is far from impressive. It has been over a day now with the same problem, so plenty of chance for the device to index properly.

The only reason I can find for this is that there are too many songs on it.

Anyone else experienced this problem?

Also, I when you sort by playlist (which is my preferred method as every album/folder has an associated playlist) it sorts the albums randomly and there is no way to sort alphabetically. guess it will be fixed in the firmware, but not very logical.

I'm having these same problems with a similarly sized music catalog. Playback stutters whenever I receive an email, SMS or IM. It also stutters whenever I change network connections (ie, walk out of range of a connected wifi).

Is anyone else having these problems?

Okay for the one that works on N900 I get:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:325,Eazy-E ft Roger - Eternal E
..\Eazy-E\Str8 Off tha Streetz of Muthaphu__in Com\15 Eternal E.mp3

Which is exactly the same as on the PC.

For one that doesn't work I get on T900:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:215,112 - Time to Let this Go
..\112\Unknown Album\Time to Let this Go.mp3

Exactly the same as on PC again but with different result this time.

So what next? Thanks!!!

I know another person that has synched with media monkey has had this problem. I just used drag and drop. May depend on which software you use to create the playlists. Or what you use to synch. I have never had this problem with any other device though though I have either used the devices software or windows media player to synch. Not an option here. No matter what mode I connect in (PC suite or mass storage) Ovi Music says I am not in correct mode for synching and it doesn't show up on windows media player.
